Never actually particpated in a challenge. Always amazed by the work, so even though I am new, I know it will be fun participating.

Tomorrow picking up book from library :D

Woot! Idea is coming to mind!

Seeing as I have not read the book but plan to over the next few days, the details will become more explicit.

Right now I have a scene from earth. The environment is undecided at the moment (need more details from novel), but there will be the massive asteroid over head. There will be a scientist with "secret information" on his screen after analysing the asteroid.

Quote "the Stone yielded a secret that made even Earth's survival pale into insignificance."

hey Steven welcome aboard and good luck for your first challenge :)
Your idea sounds good, you're right to wait for reading the novel, they are details about the asteroids in, which could be interesting for you.

Thanks for your words in my entry, and have fun

Thanks guys. I got a whole weekend ahead of me with minimal homework and lots of free time. I hope to finish the book, but i gotta study for G1 first (level 1 drivers).

much fun with the book, it's a great one !
i read it partially, just enough to get the best pucture of what i wanted to visualize. Inbetween i can read the rest.
At start, i was having ideas but soon vanished when i started the book. Seems like Glen Bear has much better imagination than i do :argh:

Hope to see some soon!

Hey man Good luck, I know how hard is to create something monumental from scratch and I know as well how much fun it is, but once we get some wheels we can start rolling right up.!!

Hey Dude as this is your first challenge A big BEST OF LUCK to you:thumbsup:. You can go through the whole novel, if time permits. Also what you can do is just go through the main chapters which is there on the challenge page, this is what I'm doing, and it is sufficient, also the inspiration images are of great help.
All the best again waiting for your first W.I.P:)

good thing you're already trying out techniques! What app you're using?

I'm going to start modeling when i'm happy with the concept and design.
But i never seem to get happy with it, so :banghead:

but it's comming

good luck

I bought maya (student edition) and I also use blender. I use blender when i need a quick app, maya eats up too much of my ram.

Currently im doing joan of arc tutorial.

Nothingness
10-07-2006, 05:30 PM
nice, i'm using maya too!

but i wished it would run better on my G5 quad!
And once you're doing renders at that size, you're
hardware is definetly gonna feel it. And my 3 gigs
ram sure isn't all that enough. But it works well.

Using maya 7 ? If you are, it had a little memory
problem when rendering huge resolutions in the
render view. Unless it's a mac only issue :argh:

Doing command-line renders sure is a lot safer
(though you never now when it's going to be finished)

anyway, much fun!

((ps. how much is an student edition? if i may ask! ))

TheSoracle
10-07-2006, 06:06 PM
Student edition was about 500$ CAD. Anyway, i like your 'subliminal' bragging about your specs and computer lol. Hopefully you were joking...

Anyway, ill post my progress on Joan, just calling it something useable for the scene.

Here is my start using the Joan of Arc tutorial. I used blender and it is basically going to be used for one of the characters in my scene. I will have to change some of the facial details for the main character after I have finished modelling this character.

Anyway , just wanted to say that I'll keep an eye on this one and I wish you a lot of fun and best of luck ...

Thanks Zapan. As unusual as it is, that is where the tutorial starts :p. Seeing as I am still new to 3d, I figured I would stick to the tutorial.

Thanks Gunilla.

I'm encountering a slight problem, so if anyone has any Blender knowledge, perhaps they could help.

I am trying to add the 'fold' or crease for the butt, I am unsure how to do this in Blender. From what I have read and tried, it only creates awkward legs. THanks in advance.

Here is my progress on the body. I am working on fixing creases in the body and the face is REALLY rough. When I look at it, it reminds me of a dog, but im still very noob so I'm surprised I have gotten this far. :p

Sorry about the massive lack of updates. I have been extremely busy with school, swimming, had a swim meet this weekend, and trying to do something with my business.

ANYWAY, I have still yet to read past page 100 in the book, so i better get cracking :p Well, enjoy what i have done :p

I will try to get a bit more modelling done before and after my meet, but i have some homework.

Hey steven,

great to hear you're still alive!

the best thing about this challenge is that you can learn a lot.
one thing i should suggest is that you try to start with box-modeling. What you do is start the head in it's complete form with as little polys as possible, and add detail while you go.

I though you were doing this modeling from a tutorial, so i'm not sure on how they model exactly. Maybe post the link and i could check it out. The starting of the modeling is very important.

Also, try and and show a wireframe of your lowpoly object when you post a WIP. Is nice to get a better idea of the model itself.

Some great thing to learn as well - for the body in particular - is the check all you can on topology. Here is a LINK (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=108412&page=1&pp=15) from on of a nice thread in this forum.

hope i'm not overwhelming :argh:

now i'm going to sleep. 04:20 am :banghead:

Hey steven,

great to hear you're still alive!

Of Course! :p

Anyway, the tutorial im using is basically extrude modelling from a plane so I may try a box modelling approach later. I am not skilled enough at the moment :P

Here is the link.

ps. I will post the wireframes after another update of body.

i'm not the best modeler, but i hope i can push your skills much further by giving these kind of crits. I believe they are more learning-oriented than just saying "great work man! :thumbsup= " and so on.
So if i'm driving you nuts, just say so :applause:

welcome back Steven:D

The part of the body looks not too bad, but it's a bit too boxi yet. But what i don't understand is the head? What a technique is this? It's looks very strange to me:) Don't you use image planes? If you want to ask please feel free, i have some experience in face modeling and i'll try to help.

Hehe, I take it the model cannot be identified as a human :p. Yes, I use iamge planes, but the order of the tutorial is to model nose and mouth later. I decided I shall try box modelling for the head but i need some noob tutorials.

If you have any helpful links that would be great, thanks :D

So far it looks good.

Hi Steven, i finally entered ;)
Your model is looking good. How is the book coming? The program has a function for cloth, so you could use that if you haven´t thought of it. Oh, and about the crit about your boxy human, try to hit the smooth button in the ´mesh tools´ panel. (not the set smooth button in the ´link and materials´ panel.

Good luck anyways, you online soon btw :P

It is not much of an update, but now people know I am still alive. I remodelled the face using the same technique but a different tutorial. The nose is just a lump right now, but I will soon try to fix that XD.

I am slowly starting to have more time for 3d, but not much. Over the christmas holidays, I hope to have successfully finished a human being :p.

TheSoracle

Just one more comment about this new face, it actually looks remotely human XD.

My last posted work resembled more of a dog. Hehe, maybe it will look like a face soon.

props are better in this one Steven. Maybe can you show us the wire. For the head, mv has give to Flaeticia a good help on her thread.
Take care to follow the construction loop around mouth and eyes, and the rest will come !
I'm not a pro on the character modeling, but some lowpoly cage for game characters will be great for reference, you can easiely find some on CGtalk. :)

Keep up friend !

Hi steven! Glad you finally had some time to give a life sign. I'm currently stuck with my Mega in Alexandria, and i'm programming and working most of the time. But just got some time off from work, but i have many things to do before i have the time to sit down a full day with 3d, but hoping to get at least one full day to do 3d.

About your face. Just take your time, save a few copies and don't be afraid to start over again. And remember, get the basics done first before you start on the real details. Looking good! Any concept on where to put the human?
