ok this is just a rough (obviously at this point) but I wanted to get something up to share. Its a little to anime for me I want to push it more real, but not going for photo real. And I need to figure out how to make her more latina... The book almost doesn't come out and say it but I'm almost positive she is, anywhooo. I've been reading the book and dreaming of my idea. So far I know I want to make Patricia so here's my modeling so far.

oh that's a stand in for her hair in the back and her eye brows are also just place holders.

I know this isn't how it is in the book. In the story she isn't this close to the fighting, AND I don't think this was the view of earth, that said, I think I can tell more of the story by sort of combining different actions that happend relatively far apart (distance) and bring them together to give a better emotional understanding of Particia's frame of mind.

developed the idea a little more, more refinement, etc...

here's my current wip, just trying to get the proportions down... she's going to be clothed... I'll add the hands, probably just rough, I don't think I'll show them in the final piece.
if anyone is interested I used this tutorial to sort of guide me along the modeling process. it's 3d max but good for any package. For me it also helps b/c I can get too focused on tweeking one or two parts and not finish the whole character.

I'll probably sew her together soon. Still just putting the pieces in place.

Looking good man! I really like the perspective and viewpoint in your concept sketches, should be an interesting result. The model looks great aswell, has a roughness to it that kinda makes it feel almost like one of those plastacine stop motion characters :)

the back ground start to the modeling... some rougher areas than others.
sgood details on the plasma board ! really cool. can't wait to see texturing ! keep up mate and good luck

The environment is looking really sweet!
How do you plan on incorporating Patricia into the scene?

thanks guys, the proportions will probably change a lot. I think the bore hole needs to be bigger, and I'll make a room of which the camera and Patricia will be in that we look out to that.
Also with something as big the plasma board I was thinking of how to architecureally enhance it. I think I'm going to take cues from the Golden Gate bridge, because it's huges and styalised achitectually.

Great model of the bore hole. Not having read the book yet ,I was wandering were the plasma starts in the first chamber.

Since the stoners were good advanced at architecture as well I wanted to add that... I went with Art Deco as a theme, b/c it was futureistic and yes old. I'll keep adding details, right not the direction is scale, I need to make things liek the small fences on the ground to give this all some scale. I tend to over model b/c I don't like to texture. So... you'll probably see more modeling before any textures come 'round here.
I messed with shading Patricia, but I can tell that I need to read some of the rendering tutorials on SSS skin. So more of her to come.

sonicx, Hahaha I've read the book and I wonder that too! This is what I've dreamed up about that. I kept wishing Greg Bear would sit next to me and describe it more in details. the deatils are spread thoughout the book, so you can't just go reread on section... and theres definitly interpretations to how it's written, like ti will say the cross section of something is description, but the cross section could be either the yx or yz... ya know? and when he says the lake goes around the whole chamber... well does that mean like some people are doing liek the world wraps around the axis or does it mean it goes around the parimeter... I'm going with the flat version of the ground, "like a deep valley", but yeah DEFINITLY some interpretation.

I've really improved her proportions, or at least got them closer to what I'd like. I decided to make her a bit sexier b/c I thought it may not be how she is exactly portrayed in the book, but it is how I'd like her to be portrayed on film, you know the hollywood way. Any how I'll post more full body shots once I get the skin SSS down. Altho the hair doesn't render with the skin in mray sooo, I'll have to do a little comp trickery ;)

ok well I think I got the SSS working finally. Patricia is coming along, this is with placeholder hair, wip. I tried to convert pfx hair to polys but no go, or at least not with this set up, then I did tests with lesser version of poly hair and it killed maya repeatedly so... still working/still an issue with the hair.

Hey man,
She's coming along really well. I love the exotic look you've given her. I may be wrong, but aren't her breasts positioned a little bit too low?
Good luck man! :D

I may be wrong, but aren't her breasts positioned a little bit too low? I hate to have to agree with this since the model is so far along. But would a cosmetic lift be possible? Or maybe she is just encountering the heavy gravity on that Frant planet...
Btw, great work the model is very kool!

Thanks for the comments guys I did give them a lift, altho in this picture it looks worse than it is when you see her whole body. I like comments on proportions, I'm still tweeking. I've been working on the shaders and the model that goes behind her. I could post some of that, I'm waiting to post more Patricia until I have a significant change from the current version
Comments are always welcome feel free to be hard or say whatever sometimes people are too afraid of offending someone they don't say anything. As long as its constructive tear it appart :)

In my opinion the character may be too cartoony for that scene.

patricia version 12 skin & proportions improved, I've taken the advice of some comments and fixed her chest, altho I just recently figured out why her boobs kept looking wrong, here they are too big. I kept making them bigger and bigger, for many reasons hah, no b/c they kept looking wrong so I referenced a lot of how to draw anime and that helped, so more tweaking to go. She's coming along, I haven't posted in a while b/c I kept thinking I was pixel f**king. But she is further along than all the previous pictures. No hair b/c I got some looks for that but wanted to get her modeled and textured first. This is the first time I've attempted a character of this level so there is a lot of back and forth.

Yeah I want to get away from the cartoonyness. I still want a styalised chacracter, but yeah I'm still working on the proportions, and probably will for another week. It's so hard to get them right.
I wasn't working for the past 2 weeks so I modeled a lot of that then... and I'm on the computer working to the point of it being a tad unhealthy. The modeling isn't THAT great its a ton of duplication, if I color coded all the "duplicate then edit" it wouldn't be that many things.
TheFirstAngel
11-03-2006, 06:22 PM
looking great. well i'd keep a certain amount of toonyness, nothing wrong with that besides, cuz it simply leaves a mark of your own personal style. better a hell of a toon that a realistic model anyone could have done, but thats just my opinion :)
as for getting things more realistic:
the key usually are the eyes and the all over proportions. eyes are the strongest focalpoint. the higher the level of details on them, the easier a model looks alive, that can be on level of geometry or on level of texturing including detailed displacements (zbrush works) singlehair lashes, good shaders for pulipls, eyewhite, ingl. refraction and sss.
also, the all over proporsions and amount of realistic proportions help, but in case of stylizing theres a far range between realism and toonyness, in my expirience, good shaders and a good ballance on the level of stylizing a character brings out gret results with lots of personality and a strong style mark of the maker. hope those thoughts motivate you to not completely getin' away from toonystyle :)
great work on the models, looks like you're a speedmodeller as well :) keep on rocking mate!:buttrock::wip:

this is the wall that will be directly behind P. I keep thinking the modeling is 95% done then I get an idea and keep doing crap to it, so who knows how done it is. I'm going to spend more time on P now to get the skin shader looking much better. I've also remodeled her whole face, well remodeled in the sense of deleting large portions and duplicating half over.

thanks Angel for those comments very helpful.
So here's a more current version of her, the no hair thing is starting to annoy me so I think that will have to be in the near future.
Her outfit needs to change, I've remodeled it 2 times from scratch now and need to find something that works. Maybe hair first. I keep pushing the skin, I'll show some tests of that as I get closer, I'm doing a lot of hmm this setting higher? lower? No higher.. next setting higher? Lower? not very scientific but I'm figure the skin shader out, slowly.

Well, I'm sure some of you would dissagree, but I think I'm going to remodel about 80% of her. I think it's that I started off with a tutorial of a picture that I didn't sketch. I learned a lot but, it's not the style of character that I want. I've been fighting it with this model tweaking her endlessly, litterally hours of tweaking. Yes some good progress but, still not the style or look I was going for. So, I'm not going to start from scratch, I saved many versions along the way, I'm going to keep her arms and legs but hips chest face, need to be redone, I'll post some work as I do it. This sucks in the sence that I lost hours of work but I learned so much during that time that it's ok, and the model will be more my style when I'm done.

Really digging those architectural details. Your Patricia looks good. I'm sorry that you feel you need to change her. Do you plan to make a less stylized/toon look?
Looking forward to see what you come up with.
destruct007
11-15-2006, 07:08 PM
thanks jj, yeah Architecture is what I'm better at, or at least it's easier for me. I plan to make her stylised still yet less cartoony, or should I say less anime more comic book, and by comic book, I don't mean super or heroic proportions per-say, more like that type of face. I don't mind the face I have now but I realised it's not what I was going for. This was less inspired, and more about getting a model out. I realised tho that my concept for this challenge hinges on Patrica looking just right.
I don't feel bad that I'm remodeling her, it's my choice. I need to make something truer to my style, not a style that I like but isn't mine. Lucky I love doing this, hah!

ok this wasn't nearly as painful as I thought. I was on chandro's thread on this forum, and he said he uses silo for a lot of modeling, and I've heard of silo for a long time, well I downloaded it and am trying it out on pieces of my model and realized I wouldn't have to remodel per-say since the topology only have a few areas of crap, that needed rework. So I spent last night reading, and watching silo tutorials and trying things out, this morning worked on the model and got her really close to where I was trying to go in maya but couldn't! I'm really happy about that. I did try twice to remodel her but it just kept looking worse, silo was totally the key! So here is the before and after, she's not done but you can see more the direction I'm trying to go.
Maybe after a little more reworking tonight I'll have her to a place where I can focus on that damn skin shader, and lighting.
C - no, Not really texturing too much yet, I've started bump mapping but no colors until I'm happy with that kind of stuff first.
