Hiyas!

I'm just wondering, does the Wacom 4D Mouse actually do anything special in Maya?

Because I bought their 12"x12" board, only to realise that it, infact doesn't come with a 4d Mouse (In Australia that board doesn't come with one... If you buy in the US you DO get one though, afaik)... and was wondering if it actually does anything over what a concentional mouse does?

I remember seeing video's of someone from Alias Wavefront use Maya with two controllers on a board a while ago, one functioned as the cursor, and the other one seemed to rotate the camera around the object... was that the wacom 4d mouse?

Yes you can do that with the 4 d mouse, and because the mouse has 5 buttons, you can use the side scroller to change the button mode, effectively giving you a 15 button mouse. While I do use the 4d mouse for somethings, most of the time I use the pen for almost everything, including modelling, animation etc, with the tip and 2 buttons set out as the LMB, MMB and RMB. I don't use a mouse much anymore - hard to go back from the pen - but if I do have to use one, its the 4d mouse. Make sure you have the latest wacom drivers to set up the pen or 4dmouse to work well with maya.

Thanks!

mmm nice! Although, after paying near $1000AU for the board, It's difficult to justify another $250AU+ for a mouse! I should have bought the 9"x12"board, as that *Does* come with a 4d Mouse (in Aus), and for a cheaper price! Thnx for the infos, I'll think I'll pickup a 4d Mouse later on in the year :d
