Hey Everyone, This is my first digital painting that I am working on at the moment. If you could, please critique. Any and all advice would be helpful. Thanks. -Joe

Wow. Dynamic... well-composed... nicely focused (what i mean is, i like that the character is brought into focus, by having the closest chess figure out of focus :) ) I can almost feel the whoosh of wind as the sword flashes by. Awesome so far!!!
Though since the image seems to be intentionally bloody, the horse figure's expression right now looks a little odd to me - like he's just closing his eyes from a warm sun, rather than having his head sliced off in shock/pain. That's really my only crit for the moment.
Otherwise, amazing stuff, and I'll definitely be watching this thread as the painting develops!

(sorry I can never remember what the chess figures' names are in English :( )

hehe i like the idea :)

to get the main figures more into focus you should desaturate the bg and chessboard a little bit.The tower close to the camera should be darker ...that way the queen & horse pop out more as well.

a really good thread to check about lighting and getting rid of high contrast is here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=359226)
just check out some of the overpaints and you#ll see what i mean :D

cheers keep it up

Thanks everyone. I'll put an updated one up soon. How's the overall lighting and use of color?

Well I can't offer anything constructive on this because I'm too busy being stunned. This scene is SO dynamic, the composition is fantastic, and your paint skills are really amazing. I'm still wondering how this is your FIRST digital painting. You must then have a bit of traditional art training behind you then? Because you're really a wonderful artist.

Looking forward to seeing more, for sure. :)
