Ok, i think i'm sticking with the part where Patricia sees the 7th chamber.
To get the right kind of contrast in shape and dimention, i left the vehicle in the end of the tunnel, ready to descend the bridge. The plan is to make it visible that there is no sky, but it's an endless huge tunnel.
The light tunnel - the lightsource - wil have a high-tech, imposant and impossible look with a bright blueish tint and glow.
For the human part, i'll try the futuristic view on the 21st centuyr from back in the '80s. So i think i'll make it a little retro too.
that's it for the base, so i can get busy on the detail and some designs.

@Jonesisme: I really doubt that, you know! But thinking kind of competitive could be just what you need to push your work just further. Just give it all ya got
@soapy: thanks soapy,in a way i'm glad we have a starting point (the book) so it isn't too hard to find something to work on. It's just a matter of choosing correcty ( was it the rod or the blue pill ?? :argh: )
@ TheSoracle: I had to ajust the sketch a lot in photoshop to look at least decent. I just started on paper with a pencil, did a scan and started painting. Couse it just did'nt work doing it directly digital.

they're called a 'hagglund'!
i tried a combination between a hagglund, a truck and a more retro vehicle.
But now i'm working on an other one that looks at least less on a crossing between a hummer and a trailer.
I hope i'll post 'm soon

It still isn't like i want it too be!
It should look less heavy, have some more detail and design. Also giving it a more electric look, as well as making it look less than an old amarican firetruck.
The roof needs a meetal rack as well.
But that's for later on.
I like the retro look alot man! Good work, keep it up!

hey all
@Crin: thanks, i'm checking how far or good i can get that retro thing!
@SNoWs: Thanks, it's still early for me to see my progress. I hope the truck concept doesn't take long.
@Rhs_CG: It does king of reminds me of the VW. But it wood be nice if i can get the finesse of the vw T1 in here!
@SweD: I know, i gotta get rid of the train influence :argh:
I've told myself not to rush into 3d before i know exactly what to do. So let's try that :bounce:

The vehicle will be in the front part, as well in the distance at the kamp in the 7th chamber to bring a sence of depth.
I'm going to try and keep the vehicle and the characters as dark as possible while they are standing at the end of the tunnel.
Looking at it practicle, there should be enough light at the end, but let's forget it in favour of the composition :argh:

This is a more down-to-earth vehicle which looks more like a truck instead of a train or hummer.
The concept of the truck: There are 3 parts to the truck: a cabin, the chassis and a backpiece that could change. This would make it easy to create a 3 versions without completely redoing everything.
The details will emerge once i start on modeling it, or when i create some blueprints.
Nothingness
10-07-2006, 01:01 AM
i guess the truck will look a bit more inbetween the second and last concept.
and give sertain thing more futuristic design.
The back part could be a container of lots of equipement, or a second cabin to transport more passengers or simple an open container to become aa pickup.
To loose the egual color, i'll trow in dirt and codenames used to identify trucks.
ideas ideas ideas ......
once you finish something on paper, you would want to redo it :argh:

This one had more design that i had in mind. It will look different with the other parts attached. But it'll give me a beter help when starting the modeling.
It has more influence from the VW t1 and looks lighter and more elegant than the previous ones.
also more futuristic in a retro way.

Thinking about it makes me feel like it's a nice decision!
In the book, the past comes eye in eye with it's future. So
it's kind of incorrect to make everything complete futuristic
and sci-fi.
I just hope it will be clear in the image.

yeah i think it's a fine decision to led some retro ideas flow in. I like the futur design in the 80/90ies much more than what is releasing now, like serenity and some cheap looking series like andromeda. The looks of Blade Runner, Alien and Terminator are hard to catch.
Nothingness
10-07-2006, 09:31 PM
i think the interesting about those styles is that there are recognizable between all others. They stand out. While all others look like one another trying to get an own identity.
It's like all new concept car designs. You can hardly tell which one is what brand. Suddenly chrysler starts to look like cadilac while cadilacs concept start looking like lamborgini.
I also saw that ducati is returning to a retro design with there new models. It really makes it stand out a little. While othere become inrecognizable.
guess thats why i love my mac :bounce:

I wasn't going to post anything untill i felt it was worth showing. But since it will be a few days untill i'll be able to do a lot of work, i'll show you what i did yesterday.
The comming days i'll do some design concepts on the interior of the vehicle and on the framework.
what you now is smoothed on a level of 2 and contains 40000 polys. The low-poly version should be quad only.
comments on the front: the flat spherical part should be more spherical and the connection at the window should shange a lot and become more smooth.
your modeling is clean, keep up

Hey Nico, you seem to be making excellent progress.
The scene you've chosen is the first one that I actually thought about recreating for this challenge. I have others in mind as well, but I won't be making a final decision until I finish reading the book (almost done :bounce:). If I decide to go with this one, I will be aiming for more of a modern look to the truck. I would also model Patricia standing on top of the truck, searching in the distance for the end of the chamber. I might even add some of the other characters out of the vehicle looking up at her as described in the book.
Anyway, I look forward to what you come up with next. Should be a good one. :)

@Jedi-Juice: thanks for the comments. As you would have seen in the first concept-skech, i placed patricia on top of the truck too. And the other character would be standing around. Everybody makes it's own decision on the style - and good as well cause otherwise everything would look the same
@TheSoracle: Thanks a lot, by the way i'm using maya too!

Crin, much fun on the reading. An i'll be there to give a 'retro'spect on your design. Just make sure you got all concept, story and kind of composition right before you go on designing.
If you want a room - for example - draw or construct it with only the essentials of what defines a room. Then later on you can design it into more specifical and artistic functions.

@Continuumx: thanks, i am thinking to pump the concept with some more here and there to keep it interesting though. We'll see about that on the way.
@soapy: thanks for the comments. I'll hope the next update will be a large leap. The truck will have much detail since it's on the front. But i think there'll be more detail than needed. Because you will be able to see inside the truck i need to do the interior as well. I'm designing that right now.
@Zapan: hey Stéphane, i know, ... polys ..., yay! ahahah. I wasn't going to start modeling untin i had everything figured out. But i just couldn't resist it. And besides, i'm already sertain about the body - except for some changes still to be made.
I wnat to do everything right from the start, so i hope i'm doing ok. I'm modeling the truck in a rather low-poly way, with only quads, so i can smooth it according the detail i need. But modeling a non-organic shape that way needs much brainjuice. :argh:
but it's good practice.
@TheSoracle: yeeahh, maya all the way !! :bounce:
i have to admit, my 4 cpu's have only use when rendering. It's a blessing for preview when doing a testrender, but having less power is a motivation to push the effectiveness of the rendering and quality you get. So in a way, you don't need all this firepower to make amazing things. Hell, i have the firepower but still can't shoot - if you catch my drift!
anyway, if you're in the market to buy a comp, check out the mac pro. Even if it's just for windows. You'll have the chance as well do try out osX.
I'm awaiting 2 new HDD's and hope i'll have little trouble with installing a 64bit's version of Gentoo linux on it. that way i hop to gain a speedbump using a 64bit's version of maya for linux. They don't have one for osX :banghead:
just to give an example: the last render was done with 3 area-lights rendered with mental-ray only raytraced. No final-gather of global-illumination. It took a crazy 50 minutes to render. And that hurts. You can do the same with maybe a 5 to 10 minutes render.

but those are trouble for later. I wanted to hava a moment to try the maya hairif there was time.

Hey Nico...nice tires. What modeling technique did you use? Displacement map? I'm also working on the tires and decided to go with modeling using good 'ol poly modeling techniques. Very time-consuming, but I'm almost there. Just need to do the wheel assembly. My tread doesn't look as nice as yours, but it will do the job. :)
Looking forward to next update.

Hey Nico,
very nice tires! I'm not sure too but I think its good old poly and not displacement right? I'm also going to use poly modeling for the tires.
Good work dude, so i can just say: hip hip horaaaay!
btw: i think 4 - 8 seconds are too short to show such small details, i hope we may post longer videos, what do you think?
Nothingness
10-19-2006, 01:39 PM
hey all,
good to be back!
No displacement for now. If i would be using the pixar renderman, i would opt for the displacement because it is extremely fast. While doing renders in mental ray, i think this is still the safest way. Also has a lot less polys at rendertime. Only downdraft is that you have lots of polys in your viewport. But with my graphics card i can't complain.
The tire itsels is about a 23,000 polys.
hey jedi-juice: thanks for the cheers. The tires are done rather fast. All you need to do is make a part of the motive of the tire, then if the width is correct, make a circle with the diametre of the outer part of the tire and calculate the length. Than with that lenght you can duplitate your piece of tire to the lenght you need and afterwards bend it to a circle and weld it. Then some tweeks here and there and voila.
Hope it helps.
Hey linh, thanks and indeed, it's no displacement. I really hope i can get this truck to move along really fast so i can get some time for the charactes. I think there will be lots of time spend into that part.
And 8 seconds isn't all that long. But, with a scene that heavy i don't think i would want to render any longer. Anyway, the idea is to show that your work is indeed 3d. Propably to show you didn't mess around with photoshop too much. So it's not ment to show all details. Defenetly not at that video-size.
I'm going to do a very slow move from left to right with a little more of a closing to the truck. But that's for over a few months
cheers all and much fun

Just some eye-candy to show y'all it's comming nicely. At this rate i could have some confidence that maybe it'll be finished and textured by the end of the weekend.
There is still lots to be done so more detail will be added during the night. When it's going to be textured i think it will be looking much more realistic.
And i think i'll change the doors of the back cabin too. They are too smakk now and look kind of funny.

Thanks DSedov, i've though about the wheel balance before and i almost designed the vehicle with 4 rotating wheels at the front. I know the back part looks small, but i'm afraid to make it any bigger. Otherwise the truck will get too long.
i really appreciate this king of crit so i can think about sertain things that might be strange. But i'm still uncertain if i should change it so we'll see about that.

Hey SNoWs, thanks for dropping in. I really appreciate your input! I'm thinking though, the lights are - for me - a part of the look i searched (besides, in the image you won't see them :banghead: ). And retro is the name of the game. In a way the van can't be judged when still nog textured because the textures give the second dimention to the style and feeling. The lighting will be the third! The rims look clean and shiny, but won't be like that when finished because it's still a tactical vehicle, and nog a classy design one. And the whole reason for the retro style is to avoid the integration of concept looking design.
In a way there will be two major objects in the still: the vehicle and the glowing tube. I'll try and make a huge difference in the design to point out that these are originated from two worlds. And for the tube i'll need some alien inspirated design to make it impressive.
Hope this little insight gives enough focus on the direction i'm trying to take.
So good night all and thanks for comming!

Nice job on the car. It turned out great. Although I think I like the fenders in the original concept sketch. These fenders seem a little light for this design. Other than that its great!

10-22-2006, 12:56 AM
@ Linh: thanks man, i agree it looks strange, but at this point it's getting a little more in balance. It's not as clean and design as i designed it, but i dont mind. Looking at it right now makes me feel like it isn't designed in this time. Looks older yet the design is too daring to be 1980s. So i hope it ends up like i wan't!
ps. i didn't sleep long because now i should be tiered enough to sleep this night! But the downside is that it takes a few days to be feeling good. And it sure isn't healthy
@ tkier: thanks for the comments. Although i'm not sure on the fender part. As i understand the meaning of 'fender' , there aren't any fenders in the render yet. Or you are referencing to something else?
anyway, about over an hour or two i hope to have the final model and be ready to do uv mapping and texturing for tomorrow. So i guess that comments on the final model will be much more valued than on the wip.

A few crits. Right now the way that you have the ladder makes it look like it would be extremely awkward and dangerous (!) to traverse. hey Nico, looks nice already, curious to see the textures and the final shaders! I'm also on texturing this night, and sculpting some small details and the ear.
to your question about the body:
yeah, the first option is also my way, in my opinion the second option is not logical, i'm always thinking on animation, with sculped cloth without a body underneath it's difficult (and weird) to make natural looking animation (okay, in this case we don't need animation, but we have a option for later). In addition is really hard to model good looking cloth wrinkles etc, so you are on the good way!
Good luck on texturing!

hey looks nice already, maybe some ideas...except the metal the shaders look a bit too "flat", maybe you could increase the specular value or adding a little, little bit soft reflections to it, especially things like the sticky tapes would looks better, but also the cartons. If you render with HDRI+final gathering in addition to the direct lights, final gathering is pretty fast, so maybe its a option for you.

Hey Lihn: About what metal shader were you talking? Was is about everything that was metal? The rails where the 3 boxes rest upon are partly rubber, so they look a little too dark. But the rest is kind of because the invironment is rather dark too. I also have some reflection on the tape for the boxes but i could crank it up some more.
And ps, so far i always rendered using final gather. When the truck is completely textured i'll try and improve the lighting.
Hey Chaitanya: (i hope this is your first name  ) Thanks a lot. I hope my details ins't going to kill me in the end. Cheers
Hey Cyril: Thanks m8. I'll see about that metal shader when i'm able to put it in an environment. This would do a lot to the shader. Now there is nog much to be reflected.
Hey Sabrina: Many thanks, i'm doing the bodywork which is the only thing left to do. But after that maybe some tweeking and ajusting the colors to mach one another.

But i must agree with hobo, it looks too clean and new, there are already some dirt, but it looks very simple, maybe you could put a wide spreaded backed ambient occlusion map in the reflection value, maybe some procedural shaders in addition, but i think, you are very hot on the characters now:twisted:

hey hobo, thanks for the comments. And yes, it's too clean.
hey Linh, i started at first with the bodyparts. But when having some troubles, i stopped them and did them last. Now i had a decent technique but seems i was a bit too afraid to make it dirty.
I'm not sure on the occulation part - or what you mean - but for now the paint has a bump (slightly bubbled to avoid extreme flatness) and i've also incorporated scratches that are not seen everywhere. With enough detail and in the highlights they are seen. I'll post a detail on that tomorrow.
So all i'll try and do is add some dirt. For now the only dirt on the side is more of 'dust'.
I'll dirty it up with some bump and add it at some other places too.
Now i got to work, so i give myself the last day of this month to finish it.
see ya'll then!

i made a short ambient occlusion demo, you can also use it for dust, just have to bake it as map, so you can manipulate the occlusion further, very quick and simple method, maybe you could try it out! I'm in busy with the body work, good luck dude!

Wheee:scream: , what a color, this will make a nice contrast with the environment...really good work:thumbsup: !
But of course a lot of dust and dirt is needed, and I'm not sure of your start with this bubbly bump map, it gives not the feeling of a worn out paint, but more of underlying rust:shrug: ...may be try it with a dirt map in the reflection slot and a bump map with some scratches...?!
Anyways, this vehicle looks already amazing!:)

Hey Linh, great example man! i'll have it a try but i need some experimenting. How exactly do you do this - in XSI was it? - if i'm not mistaken, like in maya, you set an overal white color around your object and bake the occulasion map? But your example really looks more like a dirtmap. I don't know if there is a dirtmap for maya, maybe i'll check that out as well.
Hey Oweron, thanks for the comments. And about the high-tech: in my translation of the story, the past comes eye-to-eye with it's future. So i'll try and make a contrast there. So that's why the vehicle isn't high-tech.
Hey Sabrina, I made it so that i can easily ajust the color by changing 2 nodes. We'll have to see how it fits the environment later on :applause:
And yeah, you're right about the bump. I'll make it right today. I'll spend enough time to make it look at least 'used'
Hello Cyril, Almost finished my FF (French Friend  )

yo Nico, actually this was Cinema, but it's all the same, Ambient Occlusion is in fact not a dirt map, it's a more complex calculation, but with simple setups, it looks like dirt. In XSI that is also use mental ray, ambient occlusion is present in a Node, so you could search for it in maya, i think it's the same. Because ambient occlusion has to be calculate, you should bake it as a map otherwise it takes too long to render. Good luck on it dude!
ChewyPixels
10-31-2006, 02:12 PM
Hey Nico. Maya has a render preset for an ambient occlusion pass using Mental Ray. I use it often when compositing images, but can't really tell you about baking it into a texture map as I've never experimented with that. I will give it a try sometime.
I hope this bit of info helps.

10-31-2006, 02:23 PM
hey linh, seems like the contrast is much higher in cinema, or did you bump it up in photoshop? I'm trying some more cause i get a problem because the uv's on the body is the same for both halfs. That way there were some artifacts and problems with the non-symetricalness. But at this point i should have some descent maps to test with in a few moments. Then i can redo my bodywork.
ps. how big was that 1hour+ render of your face? I would love to see it in full res. Got a link to it, or wanna mail it? I'm a sucker for detail
hey Jedi, i know how to do it, so thanks for helping out. You just gotta select your object and at Lighting/Shading and go to Batch Bake(mental ray)
with some tweeking and testing you get wat you need.

it's kind of a blessing to have much firepower :bounce:
for example, the last render of the truck at 1920x1200 was about 13min.
But on the other hand it's a shame that software doesn't use all cpu's at
all. And i mean things like simulation.
I'm using a g5, so if you want the cheapest and best quad: Mac pro !!
The only downside is that maya isn't universal so doesn't work like it should
on that mac pro. So you could install windows or linux. I'm intended of installing
a 64-bit linux on the G5 to even get more render-speed out of the 64-bit.
A thing about osX is that it seems they are working on a system where apps
don't need to be programmed to use all cpu's.
And if you watch apple carefully you might see an 8 core comming up. If the rumors
are correct.

@ Nico: no, actually it's the setup what makes it looks more contrast, i increased the samples and the spread value, cinema has also a contrast value.
The 1h+ render of the face is posted already (the biggest thumbnail on the right), yeah, it's really just so small, the rendertime for the skin is huge, i think, i'm going to use a simpler version of it for the animaton. Don't worry, if i have some HD renderings, you'll see it dude!

Wow! How did you do that dude? Painting bump maps in photoshop? Or directly on the model or what? The dirt looks very realistic, the tires too. I'm also on the tires now, will make some concepts for the vehicle tomorrow.
Uh, by the way, the glasses are too clean, maybe put a simple procedural shader into the reflections and specular channel. And did you get the ambient occlusion thing running?
Good luck and good night!

Very nice textures. I likethat combination of colours, my favourite 2 colours: red and orange.
I don't know, maybe the specularity is too high on such a dirty old car.
Keep it up.
Nothingness
11-01-2006, 12:25 PM
@ simovici: thanks a lot. I didn't know what colors to use, so i made sure i can change them instantly without changing textures. And it's not kind of an old truck! It's just a truck designed in the present with the visions of the future back in the 80's.
Hey hey hey Linh,
Thanks a lot. I'm so glad i can push my abilities just a little further thanks to your comments and help. The occlusion worked fine. You can see it clearly in certain places, but for the most parts it's only noticable when comparing it to the other render where there is no oclusion used. You can see the occlusion nicely at the boxes at the top. Where there is a soft shadow!
The dirt is done bu making 3 textures in photoshop and projecting them onto the model in maya. It's by making a special layered texture and projecting and adding the different textures. (up to 6). Then i baked the textures into normal textures so you can adjust a little and voila. This way you have no problem with matching the carosserie with the doors.
Ant the tires, wel ... i only added the occlusion thing  so no changes there ;)
I know about the window. I added that spacular map as if it's from dried rain. You can see it on the side windows, but for some reason it disapeared on the front window. And i don't know why but it looks like there is no shadwo in the interior. I think there is something wrong with the light.
that's looking nice. I agree with simovici about the specularity, and maybe tone down the reflective a bit. Put some sort of noise on it maybe.

@ Linh: thanks mate, the combination was a suggestion from a good friend. It's based an a real coloc combination from the VW vans. I just fear that the tyers might lose it's power at the final render when they show too big. So i think i'll see at the end what needs to be changed.
@Sabrina: Good morning to you too ! Thanks for the comments. And about the windows, yeah, i'll have to look at that. It'll be on my to do list that i'll post right after this one. But they will be done sometime near the end. certain things will be done for perfecting the vehicle to make it a pertfolio issue. See ya soon
@ hobo:
@ Jedi: thanks man, the rust is actually not rust but dirt. Now i'll lower it a bit (especially at the big parts) and try to fix the bump and color problem. At the back part you have the idea it's rust that comes up from under the paint. But normally it shouldn't be like that. So i'll fix it some time later. Cheers
@ Cyril:
@ TheSoracle: i told you it would! and yeah, it was red the render before. This one fits more in the style of retro and has a much more cool style to it.
And the computer needs to be repaired at a pump for the liquid cooling of my cpu's. Imagine working on a computer where the fans of the cpu are blowing at max RPM. It can make you crazy. to do list for the truck:
___________________
1. the front rim will be used at the back too. (all the same then)
2. the back tire is larger in diametre and will be the same as the front.
--- This way the back will look lighter and more comfortable.
--- Also it will fix the strange proportion when rendered in perspective.
3. The dirt will be reduced so it looks a little more realistic and correct.
4. The chrome caps on the rims need to get dirty.
5. the toolbox, the step and the little generator between the wheels needs dirt.
6. I'll need to look at the windows too!
7. The ladder at the beck needs some dirt at the botton. Too clean right now.
8. the handle for the door at the back should change to the same as the front.
9. The mirror will change a little in shape and color so it looks like it's ajustable.
10. The tube running in the middle need some dirt at the bottom.
11. The elastic binders at the rack whould change a little color.
12. The bump texture for the dirt at the back needs some tuning.
This is hefty list, created with the regards of a good friend who has the full res images on his desktops and when looking at it the whole day he noticed things that are not directly clear. Thanks alot pall !!
so the truck isn't really finished yet :banghead:

So sorry about thinking it was rust. :D Since it's dirt, I would suggest making it look less bumpy (perhaps no bump could work) and less diffuse. You should still be able to see the vehicle's color underneath. Unless, of course, the vehicle has been doing lots of off-roading fun. Really great piece you have nonetheless.
so the truck isn't really finished yet :banghead:

As for the head..nice start. Is this Lanier or Patricia? The ear looks good from the side. From the front it looks a tad too flat. i know, i've fallen so far behind. I just got the word the logic-board has arrived. Thing is that it's not even all fixed. So i guess there will be some other parts that needs replacing. Propably cooling. Funny part is that the cooling is attached to the CPU so they probably both will be replaced. In the end, i guess it would've been cheaper to give me another computer.
anyway, i know the shading of the rendering is rather flat, but i hope the next screenshot tells you for sure who the face is fore

however this single model, you've posted last is better then the turnaround

Hey bergquist, thanks for the comments. The retro will only be in the clothes (i hope) and mybe te few items held. The total should be about the contrast of both the environment and the visitors. Besides that, i have no clue of to what it will come.
let's hope for the best.

hey SweD: I wished i could have finished the truck to the state i would want it in. But now we'll need to do it with the time that we will have left.
I hope i can post the complete character this night. But i gotta work this night so i'll have to hurry.

Don't mind the feet ! I wasn't in the mood to model them in detail. Maybe when i have more time.
If there are any serious remarks, please gime 'm now. I'll be starting the clothing soon. Tomorow i hope.

hey dude!
mannoman.....wow! So detailed....great!
So how do you plan to make the clothes? Simulation or hand modeling? As you can see, i've modeled the clothes, then simulated the wrinkles etc., so i have my base cloth models now, i'm going to add more detailed and some replace some simulated wrinkles with handmodeled one. As i can see you've improve the face right? It seems so on the 3/4 perspektive, looks really good!
See you later

i'm back huh!
Linh: thanks pall, i've changed the face indeed. It's subtle, but it's there! The clothes will be modeled. I doubt i can do the same as you did in maya. In maya you need to do the clothes like you are making patches and then simulate. There are a-other methods too, but time is short to check them out. At the moment i was looking at the hair and how to do it. Still many questions but it's comming.
Back to the clothes: i'm thinking on a very clean style that is made of a thicker fabric so i don't need to much tiny wrinkles. I model the most of em, and create loops where there could be change. This way i got it easy for the uvs. Then when the model is positioned, i can reshape the clothes a little to what it needs to be.
So, i think this is the simplest and fastest way.
Cheers mate
VietEmotion: thanks alot. I like the ass too! Too bad she will be dressed
Cyril: so glad you like it. The model was the thing i wanted to do right this challenge. I know for sure i succeeded just thinking about my previous challenge :buttrock:

Wow, really impressive! If I remember correctly, weren't you a bit worried about getting her right? Looks like you succeeded.
I agree with you about the cloth modeling workflow. I'll be doing something similar, that is if I get there in time. :argh: Model basic clothes on model, pose, and rework the mesh.
Nothing more to say other than I'm anxiously awaiting your next update for Patricia.

i have some great news (after one full month)
I HAVE MY MAC BACK !!
worst of it was, that i was testing it and it seemed that the harware Open GL was so slow, that my old pc could beat this 7800. Just when i said i was going to return tomorow and get pissed at those guys, i wanted to change my HDD's and noticed a connector hanging loose.
They even forgot to connect the f r e a k i n graphics card !!
but okay,
lets focus on the challenge,

hey jesus, time to get rockin' indeed. I've been working on the clothes, but i'll post when i think it's worth showing. Maybe i'll post it before i start on the texturing and shading. I really want to finish that Patricia model fast so i can get started on the rest.
element5, .... hmm ..... how about you send me a check, ... and i'll send the truck
just kidding, thanks a lot. I hope i'll be able to finish it up just the way we like it. Problem as you go on, is trat after a while you want to change everything.
Sabrina, thanks. I was fortunate enough to model her during the time on the laptop, otherwise i would've been lost. But we're not out of trouble yet. So little time left.

Very impressive work on Patricia, Nico. I think it will do the job for this project. Besides, with the little time left, you can't be too picky. :)
For the boots, I suggest leaving them as they are. They look good on her. Besides, we are allowed some artistic freedom. :D
What do you plan for the hair? Are you going with mapped polys, sculpted hair, paint fx, or hair simulation?
hey Nico great update, i really like her pants. Maybe the heel of the boots is too high and rounded, but maybe it's the left perspective which leads me astray.
Same question like jesus for the hair. ;)

12-12-2006, 02:52 PM
hey chandro: Thanks a lot. The shoes are final. I'm not concerned about it being functional. The boots are designes to be ajustable and the bottom part is replacable. But since the chamber doesn't have the same gravity i'm not bothered with it. Besides, i think it's look better. Just to try and make it sexier. Maybe i should have exagerated it even more. But i'm leaving it as is.
Hey Tuan: thank you man, i hope it'll become sexy all the way. Just hope we can get the textures and shading right.
cheers
Hey Jesus, Thanks, i'm really happy with the result when i compare it to my work in the previous challenge. I really learned a lot from then.
And yep, the artistic freedom is there alright!
About the hair, i did some quick tests to see how i could use the maya hair plugin. Se far i think i'll manage it nicely. Only problem is that the hair needs to be rendered at a sampling of 4, which is 2 times higher than the rest. So it will be done in a second pass. It will take much time. I won't go for polys cause i'm not really good at that. And this hair thing is awsome realistic.
cheers
Hey Cyril, thanks man, the hair thing is explaned above, and the boots, well, i think the heels might be a little too rounded. But we'll see what it does in the final pose right.
ciao

Hey all,
first off, i know there are lines on the side of her head. The got visible when i did a higher res rendering, so i'll fix 'm soon. The overall has a kind of oldies look that would fit the truck. Reason is also that i can't do it in a realistic way. And to be honost, this is my first real texturing and shading of a head. The head and cloths both use a SSS shader, so it took some time to get it right.
All there is left to do for the character are texturing the boots hands and do the hair. I hope i'll finish that tonight.

Hey Sabrina, i was under the impression i was going slow on this one. I lost time again on redoing the head a little, but i think it's worth it.

hey all, i'm so glad i got up to this point with the patricia model. I know the problem with the shading on the clothes! It's because the surface isn't smoothed enough for the SSS shader to work.
Now all that's left is to stick her back on the character rig and work on the pose. But now i'm gonna do he background. It's about time.

hey Icedeyes: I don't think it's really too flat. Have you checked the turnaround a few post before? You can see the shape much better. As well as the skinshader. And i don't mind is she looks a bit asian. It would even be great.
Hey Alvin: Did you check the previous post with the head? Maybe you think the skinshader looks better there. It's still the same shader and almost the same lighting. Only less detail. And yes, i have uses a fast skin SSS. I even used a fast simple SSS vor the clothing :banghead:
Hey Sabrina: Along with some other things, i try and wait until the end to see how much time is left. The skin shader might look different in another light environment, so i'll wait till the final scene to see if it needs tweaking. I just finished doing the main rigging to be able to set her in place in the scene. Did that now because i need her for testing of the composition.
anyway, i hope i'll be able to spead things up. Cheers
Hey Arturro: Thanks, but there was already a little discussion about the boots. There are as many pros as contras. So i'm sticking to this cause i want it more designed to my artistic goal, rather than functionality.
but everyone has his/her opinion

This is a frame for the animation. This holds only the road and the tunnel itself, so i'll need some compositing to put it all together. Rendertime for this frame at 1000x666 is about 24 min with all 4 cpu's. But in batch render everything gets rendered with only 2 cpu's. Damn you Microsoft, Damn you !!
anyway, i hope i have time enough to finishs it all.

Great work so far on Patricia and the tunnel. Looks amazing. Just thought I would let you know that Patricia appears more to be a plastic figurine than a human XD. The modelling and everything is outstanding, but the skin texture is a bit iffy.
The tunnel looks sweet and I really like the lighting. Can't wait to see your finish the animation. Just to update you, my scene has gone....NOWHERE!!! Hehe... I have had no time so this challenge was about learning not competeing.

hey Steven,
too bad you didn't have any time to spend on the challenge. It's such a great way to learn a lot by doing it. I learned so much again due to all the problems you face. The Skin shader isn't really good, but at least it's way much better then my first attempt in the previous challenge. And everything depends on how you light it, so i'll see what's going to be left of it.
Cheers and hope to see you next challenge.
