Here is the next step, back online gang, hope you guys and gals didn't miss me too much. I am being a parent these days so I haven't had much time, but I will be here for a bit for the challenge. Good luck to you all again.

I like the concept. You should consider getting rid of the water (?) to have it fit better with the book. The characters could stay, since I do recall a part in the book where Mirsky, the cosmonaut, "falls" into the chambers using a "sled."

Here is where I am going to need opinions. I am thinking 2 and 8 for the base color. There will be other colors. But for overall mood of this piece what do you guys think?
beelow
10-25-2006, 09:04 AM
mmoir- thanx for dropping by dude! I am going to have my cgbuddies figure it out with me, what I usually do!
DanBird- Thanx! I am trying to composition and mood together before detailing. Here are some base colors!
TheFirstAngel-Thanx Sacha! Finna take this one to completion!
I think color 8 at base optimum. Great idea.
I think If to look from such low point as at you, at not so bright illumination of a plasma pipe nevertheless close to a spectrum of a sunlight in an atmosphere of the ground distant objects will seem gradation of dark blue color.
icedeyes
10-25-2006, 10:29 AM

Hey bee. Can't give you any advice since I haven't read the part that you're doing. Just wanna wish you luck with this one. You've got a strong composition and epic perspective going on here. It'll be great to see this progress. You still doing the 3CH stuff? Anyway, I'll see you around.
DanBird
10-25-2006, 06:31 PM
I agree with the 8 idea for the base colour, I think a touch of 2 or 3 to warm up your image
from the cold 8.
But perhaps a small hint of 6 with the highlighted parts of the buildings could look interesting
as a starting point.

icedeyes-These are just base overall color that you will see throughout the piece. I am going to go warm cool. Just thing if I want to go warm all over or go cool and warm up areas of interest. But thanx!
Neubius- I was thinking so as well. That is why I put it up because I was unsure if I should go that route. But, I might go with the blue as base. Thanx for dropping by Nuebius!
ahbeejieh-Yeah, I am but not sure if I am going to do this weeks. I am not inspired to do the topic. I may do it I don't know yet though. I will be dropping by though!:D

Hey Bryce,
really good concept and I can well imagine that you bring this composition to an impressive picture:thumbsup: ...I would also say that #8 is the best base color, perhaps some warm toned foreground elements can bring a nice contrast in the scene...

This is comming along very nicely. Clever how you chose to show a scene from under the shadow of the hanging curves... it gives you a change to develop more interesting lighting than the dull vertical light of the tube. You can add all shorts of lights and colours in the shadowy places... cool!

As usual I'm partial to black and white. I loved your 'line art' post. You've flipped the image which works nicely. But how about having the large looming darkness and bridge from the B&W stage with this fore/middle ground? That way, the 'golf tee' structure will face the foreground looming thing instead of all of them sort of lining up.
The atmospheric layering is fantastic.
MikeTheHunter
10-29-2006, 01:21 PM
Yo dude, it's comming along pretty good. What I might suggest isthat you get the street lamps either higher or lower, now they kinda compete with the bent "bridge", messing the shapes a bit in my opinion. My two cents :) Keep it up, man
heya bryce,
this image is great. i personally dont really dig the crecentmoon structure but the rest is turned out woocked. :P

I feel your new image makes more sense, because the dark shadow looming over the city below the T shaped structure in your previous sketch was really too big to be cast by that T shaped structure to create such a big shadow... so your new image works better I feel.
Also are you going to light up your new hanging city, like the other buildings. :)

I love the direction you're going it. Now you've got the elements going in a mash-up of the two major perspective lines, as shown by the construction grid still visible in your WIP. However, I'm finding the foreground light standards too conventional. Having them there, and the figure, adds the human scale, but the design is so last century. Perhaps just have the ends as glowing tubes instead of a downward-facing lens? Also, if you had them as two bars going left-right instead of the four it would bring a new line crossing the major architectural element that goes fore-back.

:applause: Great updates Bryce...

Really nice colors and composition. The only thing that's a bit off is that spire in the right foreground (right behind that lone figure on the right). The perspective is a bit off. It's perfect towards the top of the spire, then looks like it keeps bending to the right as it goes toward the bottom. Part of it is because the bottom of what we see is equally wide as the part right under the outcropping (right above the arches), when it should be wider.
Of course, if you're going to build it all in 3d, then color on top of that, it won't be a problem, and forget I said anything.
Great work overall. It's got that "theme-park version of the 21st century" feeling to it that Mr. Bear talks about in the book.

Very well balanced colors and comp. A few textures and details should do the trick but if you´re up for building this in 3D I´m sure it will be even better.

Nazirull-thanx for the nice comment!
nwiz25-Thanx, I thought I would work the colors a bit. I still gotta work a bit more. I am not satisfied yet.
ori@r.a.m (http://forums.cgsociety.org/ori@r.a.m)- Thanx! I will hopefully get something up soon!
walrus- You think so, hehe! It was me just testing stuff, a happy accident. I thought the blue was weak sauce so I added some voilet in there to see how it would work. I also painted out the whites out so everthings had some type of color. Thanx for the comment!
strangegoat- Yeah I know. That is why I am mocking it up in 3d so I won't have to take as much time trying to get it right. Thanx for noticing.
Runecaster-thanx runecaster. I will get something soon right now gonna do some 3d so I can get detail faster.
Norberg-Yeah some in 3d not all. I wanted to get someof my foreground stuff done in 3d. I hope it works well hehe! Thanx for dropping by!

One thing, Bryce - At some point, it would be nice to see a post of this image without all fo the construction lines, which I assume are on a seperate layer. My brain keeps wanting to view them as the side of a giant glass building, and it would be nice to take it all in without that confusion. Good luck with the 3D parts!

while the mirrored (latest) version works better I think, I must say that I prefer previous color scheme. The present one is to bright, without contrasts, no complementary relations and so on. This has come along very nicely! I really like your red/yellow color shift, and the dynamic perspective you have going on. Maybe try darkening the bottom half of the piece a bit? It seems like it would be getting less light way down there. Maybe try a warm up on top, and then cool colors down below. It may set a moodier tone. Nonetheless, the piece looks great. Good use of atmosphere! :)
Hej Bryce,Beautiful peace of work  ! Very nice style!
Actually, I liked the previous colours better - it had that contrast between cooler colours at the lower part of the image and little warmer at the top. I guess it contributed to adding the depth to it.

Norberg-Sorry, but I got a crit from mathias and he said that it wasn't working at all. I agreed and changed it to what he suggested. I was struggling with many varieties of colors and I think it was a little ambitious for me and that is why I made the switch. I know everyone was digging on the previous, but I thought it was not successful. I really don't think this one is all that successful at all as well. Oh well what is done is done, perhaps I made a mistake of switching color palletes but we live and we learn and I am moving on to the next painting. Thanx for your help throughout this contest. I will only get better because of you and other cg buddies. :D
NathanielWest-Thanx Nathan! I actually referenced one of your images, I think it was the Grand Space Opera one and use that as inspiration. Glad to see you post here. And I did exactly what you and Mathias suggested in his paintovers. Thanx Nathan.
musi- Thanx Musi! Yeah alot people like that one but I figured it was not working and it just was not harmonizing well. Maybe if I would have worked out the problems earlier but, I guess it did not work out that way. But, at least I can say that I finished the contest again and move on to the next image.
Suirebit- Done!:D
artvandeley- I made it! Yeah I made the switch on the account of mathias. The bum, LOL! But, I thought this worked out better from the suggestions that mathias gave me. well it is not up the quality he does but, I think its a step closer. Just a step. No worrys mate! I was more concerned you wouldn´t make it in time with such big changes.
It turned out great after all! these colors work just as well and I like the banners too, they really adds to the mood!
The main thing I like about this is the composition.
Good luck and see ya in the next challenge!
