Hi arturro, thanks for the support.

For the illustration part I`m planning to make a nice image but without too much work on it, something light and clean and not surcharged with tons of elements.

For the 3d scene I`m still thinking about a view of the asteroid from outside more than on inside... do you think it have sense?

BTW bede w Krakowie 3 dni na targach ksiazki, moze sie spotkamy na piFku? :deal:

TheFirstAngel - thank you, I know that I can finish both challenges, I just have to not make too big scenes with too much to model or paint :D question of self discipline :banghead:

I`m planning to work on the seventh chamber with a focus on modeling of odd vegetation... is there somebody who read the book and can tell me if there is any descriptions of it?? what kind of vegetation it is? I suppose an alien looking one yes? :curious:

By advance thank you for any info.

As a start I will show how to create a chamber. I`m sure many people will create one for themselves so why not to help them if I can...

After I will go back to the concept sketch step.

I started with a grid of 70x120 polys. In Photoshop I painted a displacement map with some clouds and sat views. This allows to extract a terrain from it.

... after this I just bent at 360degrees the grid and... it`s done.

Now there is many ways to refine the quality of the "ground". By procedural mappings or by making a larger grid at starting the cylinder modeling.

Hope it helps someone.

Pfff after a long break due to an enormous amount of work I`m back on track... or on the way haha.

For the 3d model I decided to create my own version of the ship the heroes use to travel the way at the end of the book.

This ship will be something like a solar sailer with many details which I hope you will enjoy to see modeled.
The animation will show how the ship travel the way at high speed.

Hi!

I tried modo202 the other day, I liked many things about it, however I'm not sure how do you handle this: does it have some kind of radial or planar symetry option? I ask this because of your model's geometry, at least the top is equal to the bottom and the right side to the left one, do you have to model/push/pull geometry independently each time? Just a question :)

The model is progressing nicely, let's see how it turns with more detail :D

Nomad
11-08-2006, 07:24 PM
amz23 - thanks for the comment
Yes modo have basic symetry options (x,y,z) but if you look closer my model is not equal on top/bottom. It`s only equal on left/right sides. Modo is a powerful tool, it can create everything but that not means that it`s not still some work to do for the artist :D

First off man, love your models so far. Personally I'd be content with how the front looks but its your art. Just an outside idea not even suggestion, maybe taking the elliptical designs on the corners and extending them out to be claws reaching down to within inches of the beam. Will take out the "squareness" and maybe even accentuate the elegent design as you put it of the ingenious air break system. But just an idea to help ya as I really dont see major flaws with the front end. Lovin it.

The increased edge sharpness on the front does wonders in making it look alot better! I agree adding edge sharpness in select other parts will make it better yet. Just don;t get carried away and sharpen everything, you'll loose that great organic look!

Interesting ship.

One crit. I don't think the "pearl" texture really helps it. It almost looks similar to the default material that you had on it before. Perhaps this can be improved.

arturro
11-22-2006, 01:03 PM
At last! I'm here

I love your organic style of modelling. Similar to GSO one. Great in it's uniqueness.
I also like the idea that is behind this ship. The way it works :) I only dont like one
thing. I can't feel the scale of it. Perhaps it's because lack of textures, but i found two elements which removed could help... here (http://www.madwands.com/arturro/nomad.jpg) you can see what I mean. Left circle points strange fold. It seems too big for me and rather useless if not disturbing the crew. You may try to remove it. I think that cockpit would be better noticeable. Second circle points frames of the wondows. I think they are also too thick and they stay too far from the window. In my opinion ot could work better thinner and more composed into glass, like in today's fighters, ot WW2 fighters. Still, these are only hot thoughts, those ideas may occur useless if you texture the ship:) still, I'm counting on you and hope you will finish this in flying colours.

best wishes mate!

ps. Hope to also show something within days :)

Nomad
11-22-2006, 07:27 PM
Hello arturro,

Thank you for the kind words and for the comment. You`re right about the scale. I was thinking about a really big ship where the glass part have about 2m of high. But by adding recently this frame which makes the cockpit looking like from WW2 I introduced a misunderstanding for the scale... I have to rethink this part and modify it to look bigger... maybe by adding other windows somwhere else... we`ll see... now my biggest "problem" is how to approach the texturing of this ship... I was thinking to make it like it`s made "in one piece" so no metal plates, no jonctions etc... so it will look more organic... but... I`m still thinking...

Hope to see your entry soon with great art & modeling inside  and best wished to you too!

Bergquist
11-24-2006, 02:33 AM
This is lookin really smooth! I'm diggin this organic feel you have!Idea - I have to say, used in the right places, pieces latching on can be a better use of visually dividing spaces and scale... just like how your wind breaker pieces (the four parts that fold out ward, I think thats what you called em...) attach to the ship, well some of those organic in and out parts could attach as well... small details like latching arms, nuts&bolts, things of this nature really help give a sense of scale, and right now there isn't a lot

But your ship Rocks! Rardcore! I'm really wanting to see where you go with this!

- I've just entered this competition, so hopefully as soon as I get some work finished you'll have a look and let me know what you think. Cheers Mate!

I really like the looks of your flawship. To save modelling time, you could keep the model of the seventh chamber and its contents relatively simple, hiding the lack of detail with a lot of motion blur. Remember that in the Phantom Menace, ILM was able to use coloured Q-tips for the crowds in the stands when the podracers were zooming by them. I think that your flawship can easily serve as the main focus of your image and animation, and you can get away with blurring out the background.

Best of luck to you!

To win contests there is need alot of free time...

vmulligan - thanks alot for the advice, yes it will be a background which will be shown at high speed... and a little lower when the wings will be depolyed. As a limitation of time only the ship will be on focus... all the other things will be just as far environments.

I imagined that the singularity beam must generate also some great energy effects... some kind of aurora borealis. So I have this twisted element which is textured to have all the dark parts transparent. Moved at hi-speed it will be a nice background for my animation and final image.

I`m thinking if I have to show the city in far background clear or blurred. By using a focus on a camera it maybe blurred but we have a big distances here so...

I see you finally did something here :) my opinion:
1. city looks really great from the top
2. I don't like the big ray, it takes too much of the picture in my opinion. It focuses my attention too much.
3. I prefer not blurry version of the background, but you should try to blur it slightly. For sure not too much :)

best wishes and good luck!

I need an advice, is the unblurred background version enough readable?
I`m thinking if I have to show the city in far background clear or blurred. By using a focus on a camera it maybe blurred but we have a big distances here so...
Then at final I don`t know what will works best.

Anyway, you can see here a color test of the ship, I think it`s verry close to a final vesion.

Hmm... The first try doesn't quite read as ground. I'm not sure if it's the blur that's the problem. The fact that the ground is on the inner surface of a cylinder works against everyone, of course, but maybe the map could use some tweaking. Maybe you could try downloading some random satellite maps from Google maps and using motion blurred versions of those to supplement the ground you painted... You might also want to try for a streakier, motion-blurred appearance instead of just a Gaussian blur. Just suggestions, of course. And I don't mean to sound critical of your work; I think it's a great image that just needs some tweaking on the background.

The ship looks terrific. I might subdue the colours a bit, and tone down the cyan, but these are all just little post-rendering tweaks. Great work. Keep plugging away.

**A small addition**:
Looking at it again, maybe the image just needs a darker background, to draw more attention to the singularity and to the ship. You might want to try a variation like that. Up to you, of course. Good luck!

This is something closer to what I want... it needs some twekings and of course some mappings on the ship like numbers or verry small elements. For the background I think it will work well in the animation and will just need few enhancments for the still image... I still don`t know how all this looks animated so I`ll render a preview this night.

arturro - thanks my friend for this comments.
1. thx
2. you have to deal with the ray, it must be here and shine :deal: I made it a little softer in my last image, maybe a little less flashing now...
3. in my last pic the blur is really small I`m dealing with what is said in the book (verry hi speed, blurred fast passing towns) and my own feeling to show what is far below

vmulligan - thanks for the comment, I followed your advice about the map, it looks better I think, especially by adding grey regions and some lakes...
I also made a little darker background, it works better...
For the colors i`m still fighting with them :D I`ll probably post few version for forum judgemt hehe

Your ship looks great . I think you could blur cties and landscape to give some sense of speed Some motion blur will do!!
-cheers

Hey Bro, Its your Chess player here.

I like what you are creating here. Personally I think that the background shouldnt be blured it looks more dimensional to me unblurred. You know what would look really good is if you use the lines that are surrounding the ship as to also be reflected in the ships reflection. For the look of adding speed I think that a few barely noticeable particles that are motion blurred in the same direction as the ship is moving will give it a subliminal feeling of movement. All in all I am really liking this piece of work!

fgdf - Thx, no finally no blur, maybe some elements passign fast but no blur for the background city.

aurora - Thank you for the kind words. I`m unhappy too, I had big plans but had to reduce them to minimum. All you see here is not more than a week of work in the entire 3 monthes of the contest

Topher737 - Hey chessmaster :D thanks for the comment. Your`re right with the background, it will be not blurred. I was thinking about some clouds passign fast, this will be enough to see some movement in the image.

alvin-cgi - Thank you :)

This is something verry close to the final... and at last I have to make the motion blur of the city... but I`m still unhappy with it... any comments warmly welcomed!

Just another render a little more closer to the final one. The colors are better but the background have to be redone... no depth... anyway I`m still fighting with that :)

Witaj,
Nice to see a few poles here, and nice to see them with ass kicking works. It's wonderful!
I mostly like it's uniqueness of shape, with not to many standard shapes which always appear in space designs here. I hope it will move this "wings" during the animation, can't wait to see it!
best wishes

well done, I think that it would be a really cool animation as well. If you have the time, this would be cool to see open up as it is flying along at high speed! Good luck I hope you win this one!

Software: Lightwave 3D, Modo, Photoshop

- Singularity slider -

A huge craft designed to travel at verry high speeds and equiped with a massive air breake system.

This is my interpretation of the ship which is described on the last chapters of the book where heroes travel to reach the rock before it`s detached from the way.

Thank you for all who made comments and critics.
