It's taken a while to read the book and start to appreciate the general architecture and feel of the different areas as they are quite complex.

I'm not 100% sure which area and subject matter to use for my final image, but thought it worth creating some quick sketches of the most stimulating areas of the book.

This scene shows the point where Patricia sees the third chamber for the first time. I need to make more of the hanging buildings and arched structures, but the atmosphere is starting to work.

I have lots of pencil sketches for angles / compositions which I'll post soon. I'm working in the middle of nowhere at the moment and getting online is a bit of a challenge.

Awesome concept sketch. I like the colours. When I was thinking of Thistledown I had trouble with how the structures would work together. It says that the "T" shaped building reached the limits of the chambers atmosphere and where 10 kilometers tall. What I supposed was that the T's where taller that every other structure... as if the hanging curves swung between them... I don't know if I make sense. what do you think?

I really like your perspective and the angle. This looks very promising, i am definetly looking forward to seeing more

MrFreeman
10-26-2006, 09:43 AM
 Thanks for all the feedback...

I've reworked this scene so the scale feels larger and the t-shaped buildings are higher off the ground. I assumed that the atmosphere is thinnest near the centre, so thought that the t shaped structures would only reach this point, but I could be wrong. This is a strange space as the cavern is wider than long, so getting the depth and perspective is a little tricky. The city was also built after the machinery in the 6th chamber was started, so unlike I initially thought, the floor of the chamber is flat, so getting the feel of the tube will be a little more tricky.

Now I've started, I hope to get a lot more posted soon.

:) :bounce:

I felt my last sketch lacked a sense of scale and space, so this development tackles some of those problems.

I was initially trying to show the entire chamber / city so you get a sense of the curved / tube space, but this focuses on part of the city with line and perspective used to hint at the entire space.

I should have a few more sketches to post soon.

this focuses on part of the city with line and perspective used to hint at the entire space.

Its a great start!. The thing I would like to see is more developement of the curves in the space. You've gone pretty linear with this one. The lighting is nice, as is the sense of movement within a static landscape.

I think you do better with the elevated viewpoint than the first shot.

MrFreeman
10-29-2006, 07:57 PM
:) Thanks DanBird - Hope to have more soon :bounce:

:bounce: Cheers ICHOMA...... Thanks for the encouragement

Thanks Ernest Burden :) Good point about the curved aspect (or seemingly lack of). my original sketches (which I will post) show the curve and I was imagining that the vast scale would mean that at some points, you wouldn't see the curve so well (though this is a rather important part of the book).

Hopefully the new composition I am working on will solve this. Thanks for the great advice

This is a close up of my latest sketch so you can see more of the detail.

I really wanted to get across a sense of immense scales and the t-shaped buildings are a lot latger in this.

I also wanted to show the hanging structures, but follow the circular theme slightly more. The ability to suspend large buildings from wires starts to look more believable.

This is the wide shot of the concept sketch. I'll try and place a larger copy linked from my website.

The curves of the chamber need to be shown more, but I'm feeling happier with the overall feel.

More soon...

Very cool design and angle, David. Nice work!
Will the shorter building on the lower left also have the discs around the circumference?
Look forward to seeing how you show the curves of the chamber more... :)

The curves of the chamber need to be shown more, but I'm feeling happier with the overall feel.

You should be happy, its really, really good.

I'm confused by the angle of the top of the building, it seems to be leaning back vs the 'flat top' of the lower one.

MrFreeman
10-31-2006, 04:29 PM
 wow...lots of replies... I'm in the middle of an edit, so just having a quick peek at the website....so I'll reply in more detail later.

As far as angle of the buildings, the view is quite wide, so you would get this distortion of buildings. I'm actually working on a version where I have extended the top and bottom of the image to enable the addition of the curve of the chamber. I'll post something later where you can see the perspective and vanishing point better...

Thanks for all the support...oops clients coming back

You got the scale there right awrite...reminds me of Coruscant.....but personally i think Eon should be a bit on a Stephen King, creepy side, instead of straight sci-fi. The idea of a hollow asteroid appearing out of nowhere kinna creeps me. im yet to finish the book...not even halfway....we'll see.:)

Just a thought....great stuff:thumbsup:

:bounce: :bounce: Thanks for all the comments and advice... Bit of a busy day, but I was working late on this last night, so should have something more to post soon which solves perspective and curved elements

Walrus - good as always to have your input - I'm still working on the architecture, but I hope to have more buildings, though not make the composition too cluttered

DanBird - Cheers!

ori@r.a.m - Thanks a lot :)

Gonzalo - Thanks again

DaveClarke - Hey way to kind - but that's great :bounce:

ErnestBurden - the perspective is right but a little extreme - I'm working on a wider version of the last post which should make this clearer to the eye :)

Conkrys - more sketches on the way!

Beelow - Glad you like it - hey thought you entry is coming along very nicely

TheFirstAngel - Cheers!! more soon I hope - still got to tackle the people which you're a master at :)

Nazirull - great point about the creepiness element. It is a ghost town thing so well worth thinking about - I'm just working on depth, scale and space to begin with :)

BC1967 - Thanks a lot

Just letting my poor old eyes have a rest - after a week of working 14 hr days and then sitting down to work on this challenge through the night, I need a day off. Still back in full swing tonight and I have some ideas which really move the concepts on

I finally kinna understand Thistledown and i think this is how pretty much it should look like, (using the artistic license to the fullest..LOL) especially i like the interaction between the processed stone and shiny metal, white and metalic, as described in the book.

I cant see what else u can add to this beautiful composition. Scale, detail, story.....ull know what to do :)
