When reading the inspiration page Thistledown just clicked for me... this is the first thing that came to mind. The arrows show the possible animation path I might take with this; will see, might be too much.
Nothingness
10-06-2006, 06:17 PM
maybe considder to make more of the hanging buildings isible. Meaning, place the camera so, that you have more a sence of the enormous depth and size.
And i guess the animation path is too much. You have to considder that you need to model and make much more that will be visible with the othere camera angles.
cheers
I agree Thistledown is the one that got me excited, It's nice to see someone else using the hanging buildings concept like myself. I like the sketch though I agree with Nothingness in that the animation maybe too much, perhaps something more subtle?

Yeah I agree... would be nice but too ambitious I think. I'll concentrate on the 3d illustration and then will come up with a plan for the animation. Thanks for the feedback guys

I have to tell you, I wasn't feeling too inspired with the challenge lately. So I surfed through the Digital Matte Painting forum, got inspired and made the matte background... it's not finished yet but I have a clear direction on where to place the elements now and I have a color palette to work from as well. This is made with 3 different photos and then I retouched them and painted some more details.
sorry but the ground plate is way too bright for this sky, not matching at all. Neither are there any shadows cast from that setting sun. Keep it up.

I haven't had much time to work on this, I'm really falling behind. Here is a quick update with the mountains retouched a bit. No sense to fine tune right now since I have to build the elements and a city is going to cover most of the valley.
I hope to start modeling soon.

Thanks for the comments guys! I'm really far behind now. I'm not sure if I'll be able to work on this and get it done. I would like to but there are other things I need to take care of first.
If I'm able to keep working on this I'll work out the ground issues after I model the city that goes on top of it. I'm thinking that the ground will be barely visible but no way to be certain until I model the city. Then I'll finish the shadows and all that stuff.
Thanks guys!

Hey, SNoWs, i absolutely love your matte painting! I've always beena sucker for a pretty sky, and yours is right up there. The city is looking good so far, but very terrestrially-scaled, nothing quite out of the ordinary yet... Have you considerred fooling around with the window sizes? This may sound obvious, but makign the iwindows half the size will make the buildings look twice as large, which might help you to hit a more impressive scale befitting the cities in the Stone.... Anyhow, just an idea. Best of luck with it!

Love the city work. Curious on how (or if) your going to add this city to your landscape. To make youfeel better your ahead of me. I finally caved and entered yesterday but have not done more on my concepts then crude sketches in class instead of paying attention to complex matrix manipulations (sketching was deff less of a headache causer!)

Here is the finished hanging building... unless I decide to add some more small details... I quickly put this together from screen grabs so forgive the perspective shift... well, I'm finally getting over my cold but now I started a new job and so I won't have much time to work on this during the weekdays.

I like the banners, add some picts' to them and they'll be uber-neat. I Love the clear crystal look down belwo, but I think the yellow ones are a tad to bright and clean right now. Add some transpancy 'look', some bump, lower diffuse a hair and I think that will help clean up those yellow ones real nice.
gardogg
11-16-2006, 11:00 PM
It looks good overall. But for some reason I don't get the feeling of how enormous this thing is. Maybe some more fine detail on the textures would help with this? Then again, it depends on how close up this will be in the final image.

hey guys, thx for the feedback!
I'm not crazy about the gold bottom either I haven't painted any textures for it but I will, it might be a different color when I'm done. The banner texture is a velvet shader and I also need to paint some kind of pattern for them, have no clue yet but I better figure something out soon.
I'm painting at 4k so If I decide to get close I can... I'll post some close ups soon. Off to paint:thumbsup:

Hey Angel,
Nice progress since I last saw your thread, the cityscape is looking good as is the hanging building. I have a couple of comments . With the cityscape ,I think changing the ground texture where the buildings sit too suggest some sort of roads would help merge the buildings to the ground better. And the hanging building looks good on the top part but I think it could use more of the small skinny antennea's or arrays , I think this would help out with the scale or size of this hanging structure.
Good luck the rest of the way.
angel
11-22-2006, 03:28 AM
Hey Mike, thx for the comments, you know, I've been hesitant to add antenas and that sort of thing to the hanging buildings, I'm affraid that they would look more like hanging cities... maybe its just me.

Here is the latest update, after solving some Maya crashing issues I was able to render a test... need to tweak the lighting and I'm going to scale down the tall buildings of the city below. The bg is blurry cause it is FPO. Need to make the cables that hold the buildings, some decorative hand rails for the FG and Patricia... still lots to do.

Nice Hanging buildings! It looks like you really know where you're headed with this scene and its starting to shape up nicely!
one suggestion - I have to say the bg and the hanging buildings really don't seem to copliment eachother yet... i mean you can tell they were added ontop as a cg element... The city on the other hand looks integrated brilliantly!
I do love the look of the scene and can't wait to see where you go with it!

@aurora- no particular reason really. I thought it would make for an interesting background while saving on production time. At first I thought that maybe there was some sort of tech to be able to support life but since I haven't read the novel maybe I'm totally off but now it is too late to change this I think.
@Bergquist- I see what you mean, I think that's because of the lighting which I need to fix. My fill lights are too bright. Good luck with your entry, looking forward to checking it out:thumbsup:

Notice that the tall buildings in the city below aren't as distracting anymore.

Hi, thnks for the comments:thumbsup:
I think I'm going to stick with the sketch for now and see how well it works. In the sketch she's at the far left bottom of the image. I'm going to add a decorative hand rail to the platform and maybe have her hold on to it.
it's a great matte you got here ! i really love the cityscape and all work done on the hanging building, especially the architectural style, which is perfect to me for this kind of "building in air" !
what kind of cam travelling do you plan ?
angel
11-29-2006, 02:25 PM
At this point I'm not 100% sure on what to do with the cam. I'll sort it out after I finish all the elements I suppose.
The last couple of days, I've been testing rendering times. It was taking a rediculous long time to render (over 24h on a third of the image at half res) I trouble shooted until I found the culprit... shadows were set to "segmented" which is used more when using volumetric effects. Changed it to something else and the image rendered in 23 minutes at half res ;)
I'll post that tonight.
oh man from 24h to 23min :scream: . it's not really the same ! Fortunately you've found problem. it's a test i should do one of this days.
wait and see tonight for your shot !

ok here is an update, added flow to the banners, added the flaw which is FPO. The city I think got too bright with the new changes so I need to fix that. Also need to fix some surfaces that are just too reflective.

Your last render looks great.
A few crits. IMO, the banners are blowing in the wind a bit too much. But that's just me. Perhaps they would look better toned down.
Also, isn't the flaw infinite? At least that's what I remember from the book. Right now it seems to end /begin with the second building from the left.
One more. :) To me the city kind of gets lost with the background. Sort of blends in too much. Maybe you can try adding brighter lights or perhaps some reflective hot spots might do the job.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next. Patricia? :)

I think you are right, banners of that size wouldn't be blowing that much unless there's really strong winds. I'll tone that down.
The flaw is FPO (for position only) I'll render that separately to add glow, bloom etc in post.
It's funny, thought the city was popping out too much... I can add the hot spots in post, good idea, thx!

The other day I was talking with a friend of mine about the sky and the idea I had of compositing a layer of rocks to suggest the walls of the stone. He suggested to add support beams and have the stone show through the spaces in between. I liked the idea and here I started to work it out.

Huge but incredibly nice and important change to your scene! Now its something I can actually see from the book. In fact this is a description from 'Eternity' the seguel to Eon.
'-the presidents third chamber apartment, located on the peak of the highest building in the chamber spanning curtain structure on which skyscrapers hung like crystals from a spiders web. '
Nice change and move. Just note the chamber's width is ~50km and ~30kn long.

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback! Now I know for sure its a good decision.
I will composite this behind the clouds and hopefully it will feel like it is inside the stone andstill keep the atmosphere, clouds etc. Seems like I have to make the beams smaller to make the space feel larger, the stone textures will help with scale as well.
I'll paint the stone textures tonight and hopefully experiment with compositing this and the clouds during the weekend.
Thanks!

Here is what I came up for the new background. The support beams and stone are seen through the clouds. I tried to keep the same kind of mood. I think this works much better, gives a better sense of the location without sacraficing the nice sunset look too much. What do you all think?

I was side tracked by most important things but finally I'm back. Since Patricia is Latina I picked Eva Mendes as my model to reference, lucky me ;). Even tho she was born in Canada her folks are obviously Hispanic.
Using Eva might prove to be counter productive :)

Snows .. I like very much all the work u have done in the challenge :D im having some problems with my head model i lost a couple nights working on it and since ur using nurbs probably u can help  ..
i was following this tutorial (http://www.highend3d.com/maya/tutorials/modeling/polygon/191.html) but i dont understand the method the describe for patchin in maya i dont find that option what i can do is an operation call loft but with just 11 splines also i cannot connect the splines that made the topology (page 2 tut they describe taht is basically making another splines for the topology) this method is with polys as u can see .. well i star lofting the splines u know from top to botton when i didi the loft it connects the vertices kinda but is not as precise as in the tutorial but at least i got something but is not pretty yet..:) do u follow me ?
well i leave for now hope u can help me .. i will post in a couple of hours maybe ill post all that on my forum.. later

Hi Leotril, thanks for the comments. Even though I've been using Maya all along this challenge, I am modeling the girl with Lightwave. I can model characters in Maya just fine but I like LW's Subdivision surfaces and poly tools better, there is really no other reason.
This head is a Subdivision surface model not NURBS. I recognize the tutorial, I think that the author is Peter Ratner. To be completely honest with you I never liked to model a head the way as shown in that tutorial, for me it is unefficient, this is not to say that it is a bad technique, I just personally don't like it. I prefer to work with polies from the get go and use the extend technique to gradually build the mesh. This way I place the edgeloops exactly where I want them rightaway. I usually start with the eye area and then extend rows of polies until the eyes and top of the head are built, then I move on to the mouth and nose and then ears last just cause I hate making ears.
The most important thing to have when modeling a head is great reference material and patience. I know, not very useful feedback but my advice is that if you are having a tough time modeling the base head with patches as shown in the tutorial then don't model by placing polygons to match your reference images.
I guess I can go more into detail if you wish me to but right now have to catch some sleep ;)

Thanks for dropping by guys!
I'm not sure what to use for hair right now, she is relatively small in the scene so I might be able to do poly hairs.
For the suit... I'm designing something of a cross between some Star Wars design and the chick from Blue Sub 6. Will not be as detailed since I'm running out of time and haven't animated anything yet.
I'll post some pics of the suit when I have something worth showing.
Wish me luck.

Hey Snows. Good to see that your entry is still coming along strong. You have plenty of time to finish this one on time. :)
Patricia is looking real nice. One crit. I think the boots could definitely use a bit more detailing. They look very plain compared to the rest of her. Other than that, I think you could move onto texturing her. Have you decided what you will be doing in terms of her hair?
Keep up the pace and good luck!
angel
12-31-2006, 07:52 PM
Hi Jedi-Juice, always with good crits ;) You are definately right I think some detailing for the boots would be appropiate. I added some wrinkles to the arms and right now I'm modeling the hair, decided to model the hair instead of going with Maya's hair cause time is running out. When I finished modeling the hair I'll work on the boots and I'll post an update to get more feedback before moving on to texturing.
Thanks for the feedback!

Not much time, so just dropping by quickly.
Nothing to crit right now. She's looking real fine. :D She looks even more like Eva now that you have her face painted. The hair could use some alphas painted for the transparency. I think that could help with the look of it. Disregard if you're already working on that. :D
Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the comments and support guys!
I've been busy making a simple rig for Patricia and posing her for the scene. I thought of the transparency map for the hair, I actually built the hair polies in layers to accomodate this but she is real small in the final composite. If I happen to have time I'll add the transparency map for the animation but I'm pushing it as it is since I haven't painted it yet... will see.

This is looking great, SNoWs! Lovely environment and beautiful colors! And I love that you've added Patricia in in the end, it's a good touch. Have you considered lowering the mountains directly behind her so that she breaks the plane of that landscape? It could help her stand out more, compositionally.
The shadows of the railing banisters on the ground confuse me a bit. The shadows of some of them, especially the ones on the right, look like their being cast from a light that's off-screen to the right... Yet we can see the main source of light, the plasma-tube, going down the center. If anything, the light would be coming from that. And even that isn't just off in the distance, casting light like a sunset would... becuase it's also directly overhead. (I think Bear described it as more diffuse light, like on a bright but overcast day.) So that could entail rethinking the shadows some...? Well, up to you...
I like the hints of the rest of the chamber vaguely visible in the sky. It helps make the scene look like it's in a cylinder, but even knowing that, I have to push the brain a bit to make the connection. I think you could push it a bit more: What if, in addition to having hints of the far walls running down the length of the cylinder, you also have some ginat circles, running the circumference of the cylinder? I think that possibly could help drive the geomentry home better, and still be subtle enough to not "ruin" the rest of your piece.
Anyhow, just a few ideas. Really beautiful work, either way. Good luck!

SONIC-X: Thanks!
LightSovereign: Thank you for the comments, really appreciate it.
Walrus: thanks for the comments and suggestions! I'm fixing the platform and railing as we speak, I have added a cool light to pull that area out more. I also made the railing smaller which helps with scale. I see what you mean with the shadows but at this point that's really not doable. It would require a redo of the lighting and I haven't even done the animation yet.
The railing shadows didn't bother me since it hints to other possible structures, rooms, etc with different lighting conditions. I think the new update with the cool light will bring that home.... hopefully.
I think I still have time to do the concentric circles which is a very cool idea! Let's see if I can pull it off on time.

Excellent work, Angel! You've really captured the essence of classic science fiction illustration... From the use of color and light, to the POV, to the juxtaposition of humanity in relation to technology... really a superb job thus far.
I also like the subtleties in design that play off of each other like the soft and fluid banners that hang on massive buildings that really carry a sense of weight.
Really a great job! :scream:

Great design. I would only add some tine light on the hanging buildings, that would show scale much more and would add a nice mood. Second advice is to make plasma tube wider at the top, it would also make the scale better, the image would be deeper. Even if that would be artificially made (I suppose that you just put normal tube) by widening one end of the tube, I would go for it.
best luck!

Mate, that is such a beautiful image. I really love it. The feeling is great. One thing that I can't get past however, is the 'overlay' look of the sky/sunset matt you're using. It seems really obvious to me that the red glow down the end is actually a sunset. If I were you, I'd try and do something to make that less obvious and integrate the image more into the piece.
In any case, I think you're a finalist.
Good luck! :D

@ Andrei- Thanks!
@ nwiz25- I don't know about the lens flare but if I have time I'll play with the haze idea. Thanks buddy!
@gringer- I understand what you mean; there are a couple of circles that aren't too visible now in that area that I think will be cool to show more of. I'll revisit it if I get the chance.
@walrus- thanks man! the concentric circles was a great idea, I think it adds a lot more interest. The animation is rendering right now, I don't think I'll have the time to polish it like the still image but at least it will serve its porpouse of showing the nature of 3d of the hi-rez still image.
Thanks guys!
