ok, so it's not much of a start, but it's a start :)
The Frant will be squatting on this light sculpture pedastal. It comes from a very short bit of text in the novel.
"He turned to the broad illusart window and spotted the Frant in the courtyard, sitting patiently on an empty light-sculpture pedestal. "
Mr Bear has the Frant sitting, but I'll have him? squatting, as he eats squatting.
If anyone has any more info on a Frant please post.
Up to now I have,
Low warbling voice, long knock kneed legs, no nose, large brown eyes, four slender fingers and smooth warm skin.
thank you for your interest, and thank you Mr Bear for such fine work :)
Cheers Matt, nice to see you !
I have no idea what a Frant is, I'm still waiting for my copy of the book! I look forward to seeing you bring this to life! Good luck.

"The farthest southern extension of the city was a broad Maltese cross" ...
I'm starting to enjoy this, ... very much WIP ..
Crin, thanks. You should enjoy the book, although not strictly necessary you will surely get a better hook on the general atmosphere, hope it turns up soon :)

Hey John, great start to the modeling. I especially like the delicate design of the pedestal. It really gives me that classic sci-fi feel as does the cross, awesome.
Matt :)

more shapes.
"Next in line after the cylinder, three curved vanes stretched outward to the structure's maximum radius, perhaps ten kilometers. The vanes seemed to touch or support the plasma tube, making it glow blue-white around the outermost edge of each vane"

GonzaloGolpe, glad you like it, thank you also for your kind words ..

Been busy elsewhere, but here's a quick update of the main transport. Starting to give some texture ...

gave up on that transport it is binned.. wasted too much time, and I felt it was going no where.
The Frant is a part of the scene as I originally thought, so here is a start.
No nose, large eyes. Smooth skin.

Just a try for the skin shade.

Wow! Some really nice models here - the Blades are impressive! I also like the organic shaping of the transport - very cool! It's a waste throwing it out I think - maybe you could try giving it some organic texturing? Some procedurals perhaps?

Great work on the frant!
maybe shape up that chin a little. Right now it looks a bit too much like he's staring with his mouth open!
by the way: what app do you use?
cheers
Gunilla, I made the transport originally to give some perspective, and to hint at the size of the whole scene. But to do that it would have to be right in the foreground and take up too much space, with little clues as to it's relative size because of it's "strangeness". I may put some of them in the scene later, we'll see.
As for the "blades" glad you like 'em, there will be more of this sort of stuff :)
Nothingness, Glad you like him :) I think you are right about the chin, and I haven't done the inside of the mouth at all. He is supposed to talk with a low bird like warble, hence the large pocket where the "adams apple" would be. He may end up with a circular/cylindrical tongue. I'll be away for a few days after tomorrow and will think about it.
I use XSI and ZBrush,
thanks for the comments ..

here's an update of the Frant. Gave him a bit of a chin. Lot's more to do.

Another update. I always thought of the Frant as being very skinny.
