gibby! 10-04-2006, 04:36 PM Here are some of the life drawing studies i did last semester. For these i used a pit oil pencil on newsprint. They're abit rough but the poses range from 5-10 minutes. Anyway, hope you like! :D

Hi there,
nice sketches!
Would love to see more work from you
Did you know there is a fantastic workshop running at the anatomy forums here?
It's called Anatomy Lesson Series Part 2 - The Torso (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=405198)
I'd love to see you having a go at those :)

Hello gibby! :) Welcome to the forum. I am unforunately unable to see your images. Might you repost them? :)
It would also be great to hear something about yourself and your art background. I second NR43's encouragement to join in the Torsos Workshop! A great way to get a lot of practice. :)
Cheers,
-Rebeccak

Oh Gibby! Awesome studies there - really like the first ones, they have sort of cartoony feel to them :bounce: MORE!
5min huh I would surely mess things up lol
great work gibby
also checked your blog quickly... interesting to soo you have sort of the same approach to your fantasy work as your life drawings... I think it's called style :)
That's some well spent time, Gibby!
Such great sketches in such a little amount of time. The last three look extremely amazing. Couldn't say less about the previous ones. Lovely line weight in the last sketches of both posts. Especially in the first post's.
Astonish me with more of these :bounce:

Another great artist here. Lovely movement to your sketches and the simple shading lends a sense of form too. Nice work.

some more updates! :D ... hmmm, a quick background check on me for rebeccak: i'm at sheridan college in oakville canada for my 3rd year of animation... still have another year to go :S i love to draw and animate and hopefully i'll get more involved with 3D animation.
if you're wondering why my poses are quick and hardly have any detail in it, it's because the models don't usually stay put longer than 10 minutes in an animation life drawing class :P so this time i put in a 1, 2 and 10 minute drawing.
anyway, our school was visisted by a young elephant and a lion not too long ago so i'm posting some of my sketches from that. the lion never stood still :P so you will notice how quick the sketches are. the elephant was a much better model since he hardly moved.
the hand drawings is part of one of our assignments where we had to draw 100 hands and feet. i thought it was a great assignment because having bad hands and feets in your drawing can kill your work and drawing 100 of both will definetly help you improve.
thanks for the comments guys! :D

Hey gibby!
Your gestures are nice to see. Your figures have alot of vibrancy. I am striving to add more spontaneity to my life sketches. Your drawings have reminded me how valuable that quality is. I especially love the solidness of you animals and hands. Your style denotes an animation background? to me.

The moment entered this thread and looked at your first drawing, I imagined you were an animator. It's undeniable, for your drawing style. It's really great, gesture is excelente in any of them. It's a pitty i don't have live models to try something similar. These are great exercises, and you are doing them pretty well.
Keep it up!

Here's another update! finally our class got a break from all the bad life drawing teachers we've been getting so far. we got bobby chiu to finish off this semester and he's been great. he's been more than great so far and has taught many of us in our class more than we have learned since our first year in our program in just 2-3 classes. it's about time our school did something right. incase you don't know who bobby chiu is, he's this guy http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=313788

i'm kinda skeptical about posting this here because i notice that this is mostly for life drawing and painting... but i'm gonna go for it anyway and if i'm wrong and someone wants to point me in the right direction, i'll be very greatful for that :D anyway, this is a drawing i did for an NWN character ... and i even dared to paint it which i very rarely do but i think it's time to tackle that problem of mine. PLEASE i would very much like some help with my painting so give it to me straight up on how i can improve.

I really like the style in your most recent sketches and also this character. Have enjoyed going through all of your sketches - thanks for putting them up!
I know nothing about painting, but it does seem that you lose some detail in the painted version because the dark colors blend together. For example, it's hard to tell where her outfit ends and the sword begins - a shame because she has such cool armor. Also, her pink lipstick seems a bit, well, girly for her ;) Still, she looks very cool painted, hope to see more of this!

finally i have some stuff to post! now that the new semester is in full swing, i can get down to some serious life drawing. here's the first batch from my first week... hmmmm, they're only 3 but i promise to have more up soon!
btw, thank you sooo much for the kind words guys! i love seeing all your work regardless of skill level or anything like that.... it's more like i like seeing the progress people make and how much passion goes into the drawings. anyway, you know what i mean!
((all drawings are 5 minutes... the middle ones could be 7 :P))

here's a quick update of what i've been upto at life drawing this week. we're gonna be doing more costume stuff for the rest of the semester (i think). which is a good thing since i'm sick and tired of drawing naked people. :P i mean, i've been doing it for like 4 years already! i think it's time our school got new models... that could get me back into drawing naked people again :P anyway, hope you like!

-really like those two sherlock drawings. would love to see some colors on them.
though you might hate drawing nudes atm., you can always be happy about it really shows in your drawings. it really does. i can almost see the movements your characters have just done or are about to do.
great work.

How do you do that?? Man, what I wouldn't give to be able to do lines with that kinda confidence and have it look so damned good. I guess with four years life drawing it really pays off, all these works are just lovely. i really like the lady with the parasol, she's wonderfully expressive. Great work.

Hi, these are really nice sketches. I love the sherlock holmes drawings..they look like they were a lot of fun to do! The monochromatic colors in them accent them really well too I think :)

Looking forward to seeing your work for the animation challenge
Just out of curiosity... these last 2 costumed poses... how much time does it take you to do this kind of drawing?
They are marvelous btw and I really hope you will post more of these soon!

hey gang!
here's my weekly update on my lifedrawings. i've been super busy with other things so, unfortunately, lifedrawing has to be put on hold for a while. :s anyway, i'm glad you guys liked the last few :D
NR43- the sherlock holmes drawings took 10 minutes each. these new ones are 5-7 minutes. also, they are on newsprint paper which is something like 18x24... i think. whatever it is, it's not normal size paper. i also use nupastel which is pretty messy but smooth to draw with.
ok, hope you like these aswell! :D

here's this week's batch of life drawing. i haven't been able to produce much because i gotta get a demoreel and portfolio together by the end of this month in order for me to get a good co-op placement for the summer. it's heavy work :( but i'm slowly getting it together. anyway, i needed to work on my portraits so that's exactly what i set out to do this week. i'm also starting to get sick of life drawing (again:P) because all we do is 5 minute drawings. it seems like everything is going fastforward for me right now..... boo-erns!

great stuff!
where do you get your inspiration for the costumes?
just imagination or perhaps fashion magazines?
where would you look for clothing for the less realistic characters like orks, elves, faeries etc?
