Hi there my friends!
at last I started something... I have quite clear idea, but didn't manage to draw it. Will show some concepts soon.

Now I just show you my first models. Just print screens from max, of course without any meshsmooth:)

I'm making Thistledown as I wrote before. These are buildigs on two opposite caps of the valey/chamber. connected with some kind of cables. I will add more of them there. I will also hang some buildings there...

I think it will clarify when I develop it more, and finally put it on some terrain. Scale is huge, peopla are very little there, but it will also clarify later.

It's just my beginning... I hope to push it forward fast. Lot's of work to be done...

best wishes!

Ok, here is what I did... those hanging cities will by connected with the main cables stream.

Lot of small cables will go from the big structures(from the funny element on the bottom part), than under the main cable stream, of course they will go down to each city as well.

Each floor o fthe city has landing sites for ships. Buildings inside are just boxes and scatter object - greeble plugin is good, but scatter with instanced boxes is better from the computer resources point of view.

Ok, here is my idea...

I haven't decided which colors I will use... also I don't know how I will organize lighting... But general idea is clear I think.

In the bottom of the valey there will be dry rivers, bridges, and not too tall structures similar to thistle plants:) I found some nice photos of thistle plants and it inspired me. I'm not sure if Mr. Greg Bear thought about them while writing, but their shape should fit here.

As you can see there is an organic style... It will be much smaller after applying materials of stone and silver. It should look like stone/silver immitation of organic structures :) I hope it will work here!

On the very foreground there are some astronauts. I will add them at the very end. They will be black shadowed as light sources definitely will be inside of the chamber. I don't want to make them easily noticeable.

stay tuned for more updates!

I really like the organic take on the city. My only critique would be that the hanging buildings look a bit bee-hivish. Maybe break up the horizontal lines with a few verticals or work the shape a bit more? Just my two cents. Looking forward to the next update.

arturro
12-06-2006, 01:34 AM
thanks for your critique, I didn't see this before, now I do indeed. But I think that it may dissapear with texturing and general scene setlement. Now there is no feel of scale, weight, etc. I think I won't change them untill put into the chamber with some materials on it. But thanks for your opinion, will take it under consideration later for sure.

Hi there again!
After a few days of commercial stuff I came back to EON world. I finished chamber model. Now after settling the chamber with my hanging cities I will only tweak some areas near obelisks.

Next step - city on the ground, bridges, long structures going across the chamber up to the atmosphere.

Hi everybody!
thanks for your interest and support, hope not to let you down and finish this time :)

What I did here...

1. upper parts of the chamber will be covered with atmosphere, no need to model it
2. wide dry river on the bottom
3. my hanging buildings will have their side obelisks somewehre in the middle, shots with buildings tomorrow
4. camera would be below them, will show final angle test tomorrow
5. generally I wondered why aliens made hanging buildings... I decided to make unfirendly, hardly accesible area, with little space which forced architects to use vertical space. Probably Mr. Greg thought about something more pleasant, but sorry, it's my viewing of his idea :)
6. more will clarify with each update... stay tuned

Hi there!

I pushed the city a bit forward... I think modelling is nearly done, I'm quite happy with the results but if you have any ideas just shoot me :)

Now I only have to model foreground small astronauts.

I resigned from tall structures dissapearing in th eatmosphere, just would be too much I think. Now it can look a bit busy, but It will be corrected by distance fog and textures

As you can see in this camera angle it's not that busy, imagine distance fog, height fog, some moody lighting... should be nice :)

These are only print screens, you can see here number of polys and tris... this is of course without everywhere being mesh smoothing. Over 2 mln polys in my poor viewport is far too much, but I hope I will manage to render it somehow.

Nice work! Love your building designs!

It is a bit difficult to determine the scale of the things - you wrote before that it will be clarified later... Your foreground astronauts are good idea.
And it looks like a location on earth, some big mountains side, but not a cylinder.
But I am looking forward to see how it will end!

man, i'm trying to use as little polys as possible, but you sure don't have a problem with that

I also try to use as low poly as possible really :) to rotate this scene a need 30 seconds :):)
I have to do something about it before rendering, there is no way to push it without render farm :)

Shading is not done yet, now I'm playiong with camera slide for the animation. Also made foreground rocks. I won't do astronaut for the animation, only at th eend for final image. Shading will be done tomorrow I hope, for sure I have to add some plating and some textures to fight with scale feel in my scene. Now it's not too good as these are simple print screens.

stay tuned!

30 seconds !? :banghead:

what kind of system do you have?
of better, how many polys are there now in your scene?

that sure is a hell to work with. I have a 7800GT and can handle enough polys before it goes wild. But if it is needed, you can set the display quality of certin things to bounding box or something. But what i use most at the moment, if the approximation editor for mental ray in maya. I keep the low poly in the scene, and let it get smoothed at rendertime. Much better to work with your scene.

cheers, and i'll stay tuned

Nothingness <- ok, I exaggerated with those 30sek :) but still FPS is around 1. With rotating I have to wait a few seconds to see whole scene. My devil machine uses geforce 6600GT. Not that bad. of course I hide most of the objects, view them as bounding boxes, and do all known tricks. I made everything "normal" just for print screens :) Thanks for your interest!

I haven't dropped by since you added the other structures. It looks like you did a really nice job of keeping with the same general building 'theme', which is nice, as it shows that all of the structures were built by the same people with the same general construction practices. Consistency like that really helps when trying to 'sell' a fictional image. Nice work and Merry Christmas!

Wonderful work, Artur! It's getting very good.
Is this strait out of max render? You have got a very nice lighting and atmosphere going on there.
But again, it still doesn't look like a cylinder interior, but more like on-Earth location. If I may suggest: your key light coming from the upper right sight of the image, did you consider adding the plasma tube passing through the upper right corner? It may bring your concept closer to the EON spirit :).

Anyways, great progress!

This is looking really good! The new realistic rock texture is very beautiful but somehow I prefer the blurred look of the anim viz. It helps bringing out the architecture real well ... but I suppose I have to wait until I see how they look in the new texturing before being sure :)

Good luck for the final days now

I really like the idea behind the image but somehow the hard work that's gone into making those buildings is lost in the overall image right now, which is a shame! somehow, don't know if it's the scale thing or what, they don't look like buildings but like small kettles dotted around a sandy dune, like a new photoshoot for an Alessi catalogue [I know, sounds ridiculous but that's the immediate impression I got from looking at it..] Perhaps it's also the uniform colour scheme that's doing it and lack of contrast [I do undertand though that those are WIP and test renders]

Still I look forward to seeing more! The deadline's near ;)

powodzenia!

musi <- Thanks man! plasma tube is your suggestion, really liked the idea :)

Jelmer <- I'm using mental ray from max9. As far as mountains are concerned, there were many hours of hand modeling, while rendering there is displacement. Material is standard, but with specular, diffuse, displacement, bump maps. I will write a tutorial after the challenge as it may be useful for some people.

Hi there!
Some of you motivated me with their outstanding animations! I just said to myself... Artur, you did a nice still, you cannot mess it up with ugly animation :)

My plan:
1. 2 ships ale flying throught the tunel, on is the camera, second is in front of it
2. is is dark, only lights from the ships light up small parts of the tunel.
3. gate is lighten up by additional lights and it starts opening as ships approach
4. we go through the tunel, we see astronauts in the left bottom part who are watching outstanding view.
5. we see whole valley, I plan to do some tiny ships flying there, and some lights flashing on the cables.
6. we do speed fly through the valley with very dynamic camera....

questions...
how the hell I will do it in 11 days, together with my commercial work... no idea, but it's worth trying :)

stay tuned! arturro is fighting

Hi everybody!
Thanks for kind words. I've uploaded some details after uploading final stuff, so it's hard to find my animation :) I asked Mibus to move it to the top of my page, and now it is there.

good luck to you all!

Hey Artur. You have a really polished piece here. I like your final still, but the animation just blows me away! It's simply kick-ass! :buttrock: I'm almost positive that you will be one of the winning entries.

Good luck with the final judging!

Thanks for your kind comments,
I'm happy that you like my vision, I only regret that I didn't have more time to render my animation in beter quality and SLOWER camera.

hi Artur ur entry is superb i think everyone will love ur concept especialy the terain and its lighting so nice man.from my part one suggestion to ur animation. just work on the camera movement little bit(like at the very begning dont fix ur camera still just give a gradual motion so that its wont start suddenly and in the middle of the scene just increase the speed gradualy and goes to its maximum).its my small suggestion.
