Hi everybody!
Here is my first rough-sketch for EON challenge. Unfortunately i dont have a chance to buy the copy of EON , so i have to interpret the subject more "freely".
I decided to give the interior more church-like look. Theinterior should look rally huge and the colums are habitable "skyscrapers"

interesting POVs here, not sure about your framing tho, feels a bit hybrid, like you're not sure if you wanna go landscape format or portrait format... I think you should try and settle this in each of your attempts. Also, I think having an extreme foreground element (a ship, or characters, whatever) can be great to add depth and a sense of scale. Keep em coming!

Hi M@!

Thank You for suggestions
:)
The framing will be errr... landsape. I am really trying to settle the framing during progress. I dont have much experience with vast backgrounds and it really hard to find excellent angle
There wil be some "traffic" and some flying chars in air for adding sense of scale.
Thanx for stepping by!:)

During modelling, i realized how difficult is to assemble the final composition because vast size differences. Right now i am modelling one of the towers, which is 30 km tall (reaches fromone side to opposite side of the cylinder) and the diameter is "only" 2km :)
The humans i planned to use in this scene are really-really tiny ....

Anyway, I like the amount of detail on the tower, however at that humongous size, I *think* you'll need to add even more detail (bump/normal maps would be ok I guess, depending on the zoom)

Hi!

The tallest buildings are looking great, nice detail & form, however the small buildings look kind of simple compared to the tallest, but probably you'll detail them anyway :P

I just have a technical advice for you: in the small buildings you have lit and unlit windows, I don't know if you do this as a texture or as polys, but the pattern jumps to the eye; if you're using a texture here's my "tip", there's a plugin (now free) called Texture Shaker, you can use it to randomize textures, let's say black and white squares (for the windows), even adding variations in color, size, luminosity, etc. Perhaps it could prove useful to you =D

hey Amz23 :)
Thank You for Your positive and constructive feedback. You are right-the small buildings really lack the details. I hope to find time to improve the small ones. Shuffling the window-textures seems to be really good idea! Alltough the textureshaker seems not to work with Cinema 4d :(
So i have to randomize the window patterns manually, i guess.

love the towers taavi. And thanx for the link, I managed to come up with an idea. Currently working on it. Btw, love your texturing.. i´m not good at texturing at all, so I need a lot of training there. waiting for more updates ;)

Thank You for Your kind words :).
The surface texturing is quite simplistic yet-just one pattern-plate. I'll try to generate more different ones.
Windows-textures are assembled in photoshop.

thondal
11-17-2006, 10:38 AM
Oh.. well. I´m still stuck with figuring out how to finish the model, but I don´t really think that texturing will be a problem per se, but more like a challenge for me personally. Good luck with your new textures. Whats the next big thing your planning on?

@thondai

Ummm... i never dare to make to-do list... the amount of work would be too frightening :)
I'll guess i keep on tinkering the textures, start building environment and of course-i'll have to start modelling the main character :)

thondal
11-17-2006, 10:56 AM
well.. I wont be making any characters, will only be doing a flyby i think, with some changes of lights and stuff.. currently working on how to solve it.. maybe some moving water.. I´m thinking of doing the water with some fluid simulations instead.. i think that would be cool, + I have never done it before...

Nice progress here :)

I have only one crit about the small buildings on the floor, try to make more diversity to the windows texture by using colored windows and not only white and black ones. You have an example here > http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=2772411&postcount=129

Keep working, it takes shape

I'm really diggin these tall detailed structures you got goin! The interlacing work is really inspiring!

You mentioned you hadn't done something with this kind of scale before but you seem to be doing an excellent job demonstrating just that, so rock on! :buttrock:

I agree with the others on diversifying the windows on your smaller buildings but as its a WIP I won't say anymore :)

Cheers! And I'll be watching for updates!

Ok, here is the first pic of the interior, 4 towers from the end are still missing because too long render times. I added docking stations in the middle of the towers. The cylinder is rough model, too. Main light -set up is established, needs definitely some tweaking. Ithink I need to add atmosphere, to make the scale more believable.

Looking good, taavi.

You mention that the lighting is established, but I think that it si too dark in many areas. You might have to come up with some ambient lighting solution to remedy this. It would really help pick out the nice architectural details that you put into your models.

Bergquist

OMG! This looks freakin awesome! :buttrock:
I love seeing followthrough and this is looking great from your concept!

On the lighting idea - the lowercity lights are well rounded... there are pools of darks and lights, values of highcontrast eareas and everything in btween, while the lager buildings have no range in value like the pools of light inbetween the buildings on the street.

Do you still plan on having your flying person in the scene?

I do have one crit regarding the plasma tube. I think it is way too bright. It is my understanding from reading the book that the tuberider travels along the singularity within the plasma tube. So, I would think that the tube would be less bright otherwise the passengers in the tuberider would become blinded from the light. Something for you to think about. :)

PS. can anyone share his/her experience how to render massive scenes? My computer just freezes when i'll try to render the scene with all towers being visible. For this pic i rendered all towers as separate passes. But the side walls are lacking the shadows of the towers- because the environment/background pic was rendered without any "pillars" visible.

Thanx for advance!

Hi Taavi,

Your scene is looking rather epic! Nice work dude. Might I suggest making the lights in the buildings smaller to give everything a bigger scale?

Cheers :D

I love the positioning in this last image it really gives you a wonderful sense of size in this massive chamber!

Hey Aurora, Ginger!
Thanx for kind words :)
I am still looking for right viewpoint-angle.
I have to simplify the pillars somehow- the amount of details is too much for rendering.
Maybe the background pillars should be simpler and with less details...

In the first look the color composite is great and I am sure the city in the foreground will be made completer and makes it even look better.
Happy new year!

I've got 2 gb ram and that might not be enough for full-scene rendering. So i have some workarounds under "investigation". I'll definitely report how successfully i solved problems.

taavi torim is entered in the "Eon Challenge" update: View Challenge Page (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/eon/view_entries.php?challenger=11753)

Latest Update: Shading (Textured and lit): composite test

Hello!
Your composition look good. Dont forget to add some haze/fox. I think city at the bottom is lacking some deph this should help a lot. Keep up your great work!

The model update - Texturing is still WIP. I am quite clumsy in UV editing, so it takes extra long time to figure out all the tweaks and finesses what UV painting /editing can offer :)

Great Tavi!
it looks very spectacular and powerful. I agree about the depth of the foreground, some haze is needed there. Some genlty distance fog and bottom fog would fix everything. Flying machine looks also nice, what is important it fits the mood.
good luck!

Ok, i think that the main flying "machine" is done. If i find enough time, ill continue with character, otherwise i'll continue with the main scene

Looking good, Taavi, and you've got a slick design going for that flyer as well.

As for rendering problems, just stick to rendering elements individually and composite. It's usually the only way to get the job done AND keep your sanity intact at the same time :D

If there is an obvious lack of shadows in some places where the shadow caster is not included in the currently layered render, I usually use the good old proxy trick: make a very low poly approximation of the object that is supposed to cast shadows, and then use whatever mechanism your software has to make the proxy invisible to cameras, yet visible to shadowcasting lights. Then you'll get your shadows, but you don't see the proxy in the rendered output. For the remaining layers, just rinse and repeat as needed.

EDIT: Given the new info, use a compositing tag on the proxy - with 'cast shadows' checked, and 'seen by camera' unchecked ;)

Here is the composite test. I am not satisfied with the camera-angle and there are some mistakes in compositing (some overlapping and missing areas). But basically i magaged to learn how to divide the scene into separate parts and render those one by one. I truly hope that i'll manage to finish in time .

Here is my final render for EON challenge. However the visual i created does not copy 100% the EON novel's storyline, but it is inspired by it.

As i mentioned before, my work is inspired by EON novel and it does not follow excact storylines/landmarks from the book. I created a bi-polar chamber inspired by gothic catedral interiors. Massive pillars contain living modules, docking stations, life support machinery etc etc. However - both floors contain 2 bipolar city's, too.
This chamber does not exist in the novel, but i think it might "fit" to the EON story quite nicely.

But anyway-id did my best and i will definitely finish the render, too :)

Hey, really sorry to hear that your entry didn't make it in... on the other hand, happy to hear about the whole baby thing

Better do as much CG stuff as you can before the actual birth and everything, because things will certainly change into something that usually doesn't leave much room for such time-consuming activities as 3D... at least not during the first 1 - 1.5 year...

And on that happy note ( :D ) - Congrats!

You betcha... However, at this point my daughter is nine years old, but I still have vivid memories of those first couple of years :scream: The only problem I have these days is that she constantly wants to use my PC to play with MudBox or have endless MSN conversations with her granny...

Maybe to give her some refurbished laptop? For endless msn-chat?

BTW Your manimation ROCKS. ditto.
