Hello sabrina and first of all, the best of luck with the challenge:thumbsup:...

The sketch looks great but i think that you might want to differentiate a bit from the standard "book look" of the second chamber...

Just my 2 cents...

Roman, hey, the latest news are good for sure! Thanks for the link, very helpful if I still need the german version...

Basically its been like that for ages now (my signature and my situation)... BUT, i do have to practice my skills and all so i will try to complete the trailer entry...

Just to keep the ball rolling, another very quick view...I think of a scene in the new library, Lanier instructing Patricia in the use of the information system; outside a view of the futuristic hanging architecture in the 3rd chamber...maybe this can be interesting!??

Gunilla
10-12-2006, 08:05 AM
Oh dear, a new concept so soon! Yes - I think this could work well, but... in a way I preferred the first since the view through the window blocks so much of the "Ouahhh-effect" from the beauty of the landscape. Maybe the landscape with the hanging buildings and something happening closer to it? Could one of the characters be climbing up to explore it?

hmmm... as you might have guessed I'm not far through the book yet :)

Splendid so far, but I didn't expect anything less.

That can be interesting too... but of course, the first vision was impressive and really "Ouahhh-effect" as Gunie said...
About the new composition, you can certainly something more "impressive vision"... with the table and people more near of the windows (it's really window, not ?)... and with a camera framing with more depth (plunging), to the out background... mmmh... I don't know to be really understandable this morning... :D

...sorry for the bad morning brain of lolo

Great idea Sabrina!

Having the inside calm tranquillity of the library and the characters in foreground.
And the huge hanging buildings structures in the background seems excellent.

I think this image has great potential!

Hey Diego, so I'm waiting for your entry! As a fan of science fiction I'm sure you'll like the story!

I believe that will like, who knows I receive some idea for the contest!

I like your idea a lot, because it divides the scene in two, one in human scale (in) and other (out) that gives a larger vision of the " universe " that is the objective of the contest!

I also think the position of the camera can improve the " drama " of the scene!

Congratulations, good work!

:D hehe, the "best cat of all" is called Marvin and he's the true master of house and garden here...greetings to your Pierry!

Pierry is also the king of this house! The whole morning he wakes up us, only to sleep in our bed...lol

Gunie, Lolo, it's noted: Looking out for the "Ouahhh-effect":D ...
But I see what you're thinking of, the comp is a kind of boring this way...I need a more open concept!
Thank you both for your always helpful comments!

Hi Per, nice to see you here for a visit and thanks for liking the concept:) ...I work it over now and I hope you'll also like the next version!

Hey Gonzalo, great to see you here and thanks for the encouragement!

Looking out for the "Ouahhh-effect"

And that would be the third from here !

Maybe you could make a front left building where you can see the characters inside ... this way you could have the ouah-effect of the landscape and also by exploring the picture , the two characters refering to the story .... just a thought ...

cheers ,

Hi Laeticia and Stéph, thank you both for dropping by!:)

Stéph, I see this 3rd vote for a more open concept, and I agree...just a moment of patience until the next upload!

Heya Gert, thank you and yes, I've finished a qick-read-through...and I really hope you've received your book meanwhile!
I can imagine a lot of sceneries with a good visual impact, but with the goal to attract the viewer without long explanations I prefer the 2nd and the 3rd chamber...and of course it's a personal preference, I'm just not the fan of "Star Trek"-sceneries! Now I still need a decision between the 2 possible cityscapes ...

I decided to keep the 2 characters (Patricia and Lanier) in the foreground, but with an open view and the focus on the landscape...the concept for the architecture is still to built, I'm not really sure if I take the more "oldfashioned" cityscape of Alexandria or the futuristic hanging structures from the 3rd chamber...

Hey Corrie, that's a good question - and I think Mr. Bear didn't care so much about those details, at least I found nothing in the book about it...so it's our turn to imagine something;) (http://forums.cgsociety.org/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#), for example hanging streets between the single buildings and in a floating city a kind of "air-car" would probably be so common like our usual cars:) ...
I would like to say 'have a look at my next update' but I'm still far away from these details...

it's not coming out the way I want, but take it just as a placeholder for the effect I'm looking for: The floating/hanging city, huge but not too solid, a more fragile appearance, partially vanishing in the haze and the clouds...

mmmh...how to explain with my so good english ? more work with the focal, with orientation of camera, angle, scale between element and of course the depth... I know it's a bit early for that because it's just the placement of elements, but the compo could be good like that if you exagerate the vision to increase the action, and obtain something imposing... Good Morning!

Wow, it seems I had some visitors here during the weekend, this support is just amazing!!

Great painting, I like her, she really has personality. I like the fact that she seems rather "strong" too. Not sure about her make up though, looks like evening make up for a dinner or a dance Hey Mathias, great to see you here and thanks for your comment...what looks like heavy make-up is more my rough painting:blush: (http://forums.cgsociety.org/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#)...I hope the poly-version will look more natural then...
very nice... very close to the description of the book... great work... really like the "not-absolutelly-perfect-woman" style you got there... and as far as looking too latina, i wouldn't worry... As i said she looks just perfect... George, she's perfect because she's not looking absolutely perfect:D !? Anyways, glad that you like here and thanks for your support!
Looking really good, Sabie! I like her latin look and they will be a stunning couple - as icedeyes says, it's really nice with a more real looking heroine. Nice job and if you can bring them into polys that's great - if not you will have no problem painting them.
Morning Gunie, so you think they are a good couple, thanks for your feedback:) , now I need to sketch my orthographic views and then I've no more excuse to avoid some serious modeling...

Hey Dmitri, thanks for the visit!

That is a very valid reason to make him look like this. And I see you have made Patricia fore me!Excellent characters my dear.Cant wait to see where this ends! Heya Per, good that you can follow my thoughts and I'm happy that Patricia suits your taste:D ...

Hey Jim, thanks and I just saw that you've already started your character...I'm envy:scream: !

Hey Neville, I have to smile while reading your comment:) , great to have your enthusiastic support here, thanks a lot!

lol, cgtalk went under maintenance for... sigh when i wanted to post, as usual :P love how you painted her, so alive, so much character, strong and of a natural beauty. awesome portrait, keep up the great work! keep on rocking! Sacha,...and I thought this only happens to me all the time:D ...glad that you like the sketches, thanks!

THe city composition looks nice. Hi Johor, thank you and I hope the characters will fit in there well...

Ah, Gert, good to hear that you like the sketches and even better that you've finished the book...I'm sure you can't wait now to start the sketching and modeling, not?:)

Bonjour Sophie et merci beaucoup pour l'éloge et ta visite...and here ends my school-french:) ...

Hey Roshan, good to hear that you like my Patricia sketch, thanks!

John, glad that you like, thanks... and how about your first sketches, I'm eagerly waiting!

Wheee Stéph, great to see you're still around and thanks for the nice comment...btw: congrats again for the new job, really good news!:)

Thanks for your support Remko, very appreciated!

Hopefully I can show the first polys soon, I plan to start with Lanier...just need a few more sketches to prepare the modeling.

The portraits are really nice!

What I like more - and I believe you intend to paint it - is the far landscape going up. It seems an ascending mountain, but we know it's the curving surface of the Chamber. If you preserve it, with the right dose of detail and haze, it should add a breathtaking touch to your artwork...;)

Bruce, thanks for your visit :) and I'm sorry to cause confusion here with an early wip, I'll certainly work further on the nose region...this is just for the unpatient people here...a better view is coming soon!

i'm not completely reading all posts, and i'm not in the habit of being in the illustration section, but what's a 3d model needed for here? Is this creating your own reference to do a painting of? By anyway, it's great ! Thanks Nico, and why modeling the characters...good question:scream: , I want at least some good low poly models of the characters to have more freedom finding a good composition and scenery - the same for the city. Later there will be of course a lot of post work and compositing and we're not encouraged to do this in the model-section:shrug: . And the other reason is just that I've started to learn some character modeling this summer and want to continue with this...and I couldn't resist the challenge, so I try to make the best of both in my limited spare time:) ...

I feel with you, it's one of the reasons I'm in this section, especially for your scenery I can well imagine that postwork makes a lot, so why not decide later to come back here again if necessary:shrug: ...?!

The first pic is very good... the thing a bit disturbing in the second pic is certainly the forehead too much in rear... but that will be better to have real light with shadows to really well interprate the head's shape...

mmm... maybe the part between mouth and nose is too large... but we're all differents, not ? :)
also maybe the ears lobes are too large and too much glued on head... difficult to see in fact...

Here's my first thoughts... already well done, and certainly sufficient with your final framing

Hey Constantinos, nice to see you here:) ...so you think he's chubby, it's noted!

Morning Lolo, I'm not sure about the forehead, but I'm afraid your right with the part between mouth and nose, maybe too large...and the ears:sad: ...I hope to fix this in the next step, it's always a pain for me to keep them low-poly enough for the base mesh...some good points, thanks a lot for the hints!

Morning Gunie, Lemogish speed? that's an amazing compliment:) ...but actually I've spent all the spare time of this week pushing and tweaking to get him so far...and I think I'll give him just a few more details while building the body, he looks too flat for my taste atm...Thanks for keeping me so motivated!

Hey Laeticia, great to hear that you like the model and you're right with the eyes, they need something to reflect...thanks for the visit!:)

Hi Timur, I'm not really fast, but thanks for the compliment...so Lanier is too fat for your taste:hmm: , hmmm...

Hey Jim, the extra loop is for a dimple, I'll try to detail him more so that will hopefully be more obvious in the next renders...and not too fat for you, I'm eased:D ...thanks for having a look at him!

and Timur again...so just a little bit too fat:twisted: , ok

Hi John, thanks for recognising the dimple:D ...and the ears...well, they still have a kind of life of it's own, but I try my best...

Hey Per, ah, good to hear your praise...even if he's not the Sitting Bull type...perhaps I can tweak the nose a little more...and concerning the Patricia model I'm afraid you have to wait at least for the next week:) !

guten morgen,
dacht mir doch ich guck rasch rein in thread von der frau sonnenschein ^^

the Lanier Model looks solid and good at its base. i dont know where you plan the refinement, if its going to be zbrush, try not to go up too much into detail, since, 1st of all high poly and verticle concentration make the mesh very heavy on low subdivision amounts already(mainproblemzones to meet on zbrush in my expirience are ears, hands and eyes nose mouth.). Either way planing detaillevels always is good, stuff like what is going to be seen close up and what can be medium level of detail, what can be solved with displacement, what with normalmaps and bump if its going to be all modelled in your 3d main app then dont worry.
looking forward to your next update, very very promissing start on him :) keep on rocking!

Was worried there fore a little while, I was the only one who could see this….:)
Now if you could make Patricia look a bit like my avatar, it would make me so happy!

Hey Tiziano, thanks for your visit and the good wishes...hmmm, as far as I remember nothing is said about Lanier's eyecolor, his hairs are black:shrug: ...but I've tried to give him darker eyes and trust me: he's looking better this way! So forgive me this little artistic freedom, it's of course more a thing of the personal taste:) ...

Of course nothing to say against artistic freedom, far from it (neither against personal taste, of course) :). I was just thinking of the spot in the book when Lanier meets Patricia the first time:

"an altogether unpractical-looking woman, he thought. Beneath wide square eyes as black as his own, and a small, sharp nose, she had drawn her mouth into a tight line"

Allo Sabie,

Just poking my head in to cheer a little bit, wish I could be more active here, looks like you've got a good thing going! If I could give one small crit it might be that the forehead seems a bit small, maybe he needs more headroom above the eyes - but it just depends on the character and so far everything looks impressive. :) Keep up the great work! :)

Hahahaha! Good Evening...
I think I miss a lot of interesting :)
First Sabrina you are so fast... where you get energy?
Second Lanier: great modeling, and great texturing, did you paint it by your own self?
but his skin a little bit blue, maybe you have to change the light or skin color.

Good Morning!

Now if you could make Patricia look a bit like my avatar, it would make me so happy!
Hey Per, your overpaint was so much fun, of course I want to make you happy, and looking at the ears and the hair of your cute avatar maybe my first Patricia version will have some similarity:scream: ...

Jesus, haha, your combination is perfect:thumbsup: ...too pity that I get the good suggestions now with the Lanier mesh nearly finished...but I've heard somewhere that Russell Crowe beats innocent people with telephones, perhaps not so good for a hero...

I was just thinking of the spot in the book when Lanier meets Patricia the first time:"an altogether unpractical-looking woman, he thought. Beneath wide square eyes as black as his own, and a small, sharp nose, she had drawn her mouth into a tight line" Hey Tiziano, thanks for the quote...I've totally overseen this description, you're right...hmmm, perhaps I give the darker eyes a second try:) ...

Hi Tony, how nice to see you again, I've already missed you in Lemog's thread...thanks for your kind comment, will we get a daily "keep going" now:bounce: ??? Your motivation is always appreciated!

I can't stop laughing... you will make my evening guys and of course... I'm so disturbing Sabie ... and the dream comes true Lolo, great to see you've some fun with this...Per is too good with his overpaint! And of course I'm happy to make a dream come true, though I've no clue which dream:D ...

Hey Becca, so nice that you find the time for a visit here, I know that you're very busy atm...and a good point for Lanier, thanks for your critical look, I'll try to fix this now that I have the good reference hero:D ...

Hey Timur, you've just missed a little fun, but that's also important here, not? Texturing is a mix of some photo references and painting...and I doubt to be fast, but the energy for this comes certainly with the good motivation and the fun I have here!
About the skin, I'm not sure which skin you're talking of:scream: , but my Lanier looks blue because the main lightsource for him is the blue light of the plasma tube...time to read the book for you:twisted: !

Jim, thank you, glad to hear this!:)

Mark, thanks a lot for your visit! And with you and Per and the other nice people around in my thread it's always fun:thumbsup: ...

Well, I found some time yesterday for Patricia's head and now just rendering some tests, so stay tuned for the next update!

Hey Gonzalo, thanks and nice to have you here for a visit! And I'm shocked, I would never put my cat in something:scream: ! He - Marvin - is sitting on a bench in the garden and watching me while working hard...and he's always hoping I'm harvesting some appetizing flesh instead of berries someday:D ...

Lolo, glad that you like her so far...and I always wanted to be an astronaut, but no, not a selfportrait:) ...she's far away from being red-haired and green-eyed I think...or better: I'm far away from being Mr. Bear's vision of a tough physicist girl:scream: !

So no lunch for me but some fights with MR...the first skin shader version is on the way...I'm really under time pressure for the rest of the week and won't change much before next Monday, but all suggestions are as always highly appreciated:) !

Patricia's head with a basic texture, skin is still very plastic-like...
For my taste she's too round and "sweet" atm, so I try to work out the bone-structure a bit more, give her some more character...

A very late good morning everyone...

Nico, thanks for the nice words, very motivating! And I'm sad to hear about your continued hardware problems...I hope you're not losing too much time this way:sad: ...

Hey Tony, the hair:scream: ...I'm afraid this will be a story of it's own...we will see!
Haha, and I'm looking forward to the "keep goings", thanks!:)

Hi Timur, thanks for the critic and it's no problem at all, very much my thoughts about the skin and of course it's a wip...

Hehe, thanks Gonzalo and I'll kiss the cat :D !

Jesus, I'm afraid the ears are not looking odd only from this angle...and I'm not sure if the hair will be the solution for this, certainly some work needed...Thanks for your support:) !

Hey Cyril, not much words, but really appreciated:) , thanks!

Hi Bradford, thanks for this hint, I'll have an eye on the lids:D ...you have such a cute avatar by the way...

Hey Sacha, you're scared? This was of course not my intention:D ...thanks for the cheering!

Ah, Mark, so much cheering, thanks...and I feel far away from making such wonderful things like the "innocent bystander"...

And another cheerleader, thank you Jim!

Hey Gunie, thank's a lot and I'm not sure about the speed, so far I've only 2 heads...and time is running:scream: !

Lolo, really glad to hear that you like her and of course you have a good point here...I think the next steps are modeling the bodies and rigging...and then I have to decide about the final framing, I'm already wondering if it wouldn't be a good idea to have the focus more on one character:curious: (http://forums.cgsociety.org/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#)...but this is something for next week...

Thanks for the continued support and I wish you all a great weekend!

A quick render of the general direction Patricia is going, still very wip...hairshadows, eyebrows and lashes are still mapped stand-ins, if I put her more in the foreground she'll get some "real" hairs later...the hair tests so far are just awful, I have to think about a solution...

Wonderfull uppdate Sabrina!
She is looking really nice now, and even looks like she hasn’t been sleeping to good lately.
She will look stunning with hair I’m sure!:bounce:
Hair in Max is generally a pain and gets really scary when you want dynamics on it.

But sure you can get a nice result with Patricia if you don’t have any fancy ideas (like princes Leah in Star Wars ore something:)).

If all things fail we are aloud to paint hair in Photoshop this time.

Two things I notice though… The Eyes are quite a bit on the bright brown side and don’t quite fit in with the rest.
And you are getting some funny lighting in her nostrils.
Maybe the edge inn there is to sharp?
Of cores the final render and what angel she will be rendered in these things may not matter.

Can’t wait to see the rest of her!:buttrock:
