Good Morning!
Very good at this point... I'm a bit speechless... just imagine her with hairs (and details needed) and good lighting... yep yep Morning Lolo, thanks and you're speechless? That's not good, I need the advices ...For a close-up she'll certainly needs more work, but I first look to get a more precise concept and the other scene elements...I just have 2 heads atm:scream:...
can anyone read my mind and write cuz my hand and mouth can`t move after seeing such beauty art lol u are doing great job sabie keep going
Ah, I see you like her, Tony, thanks for the "keep going"...:)
Hair in Max is generally a pain and gets really scary when you want dynamics on it. But sure you can get a nice result with Patricia if you don’t have any fancy ideas (like princes Leah in Star Wars ore something ). If all things fail we are aloud to paint hair in Photoshop this time. Two things I notice though… The Eyes are quite a bit on the bright brown side and don’t quite fit in with the rest. And you are getting some funny lighting in her nostrils.Maybe the edge inn there is to sharp? Morning Per, thanks for your comment, some good points... and the option to paint hair in PS is not the worst if I look at my max-internal hair so far ...The eye-color is intentional, but perhaps a bit to bright, you're right, I try to darken them...the nose-problem is of course not intentional and I've already used all the common tricks to get rid of the unwanted light, with no effect but I'm sure I'll solve this in the next 10 weeks:banghead: ...
She is really beautiful, what photos did you use this time, your own? We know it can't be Lolo this time, right? Morning Gunie, glad that you like her! Photo references I used only for the hair shadow and the mouth so far...so she's totally a product of my imagination:wise: ...
oO' °...."ah oué quand meme" (in french in the text )
What technics did you use for mapping, uv map unfolding ? (sorry if it's yet said, i've not read all ...too long english texts give me headache Hey Cyril, I'm not sure, but I guess your comment is positive:D !? Thanks and for the mapping I just put a cylindrical uv-map on the head and then used pelt mapping and a lot of pushing and tweaking to get a map I can paint on...
Hehe, Tony again, I can asure you that it is no selfportrait...beside of the dark eye shadows, I haven't much sleep these days:scream: ...
Your progress is just insane !! ...nothing to add ... I just can't wait for more ... will check in a couple of hours for a new awesome character ...
Wheee Steph, so glad that you're still around and thanks for your nice comment ! Not much updating today, I just try to solve some of the more technical problems...And I've heard you're teaching max now! So I know now someone to ask all my silly questions:twisted: ...
The Patricia head is just amazing. Wonderful work. It shows me how much I have to learn! Keep up the fantastic work. Thanks a lot for this nice comment:) ...
One part of the night I spent with the attempt to attach some bodyparts to Patricia's head, just to discover that I'm not able to get my MR skin-shader working as a multi/sub-Object material:sad: ...I'm totally annoyed and if someone knows a good workaround for this I w'd be happy to hear it...
and also if someone had found a description of Patricia where she's wearing something else then this blue overall, I'm a little helpless to let her look good in such clothes:shrug: ...

Morning Sabie...
just sorry you find my comment a bit poor... I can explain...
I saw as many of us it remain much details to do and to fix... but usually, for me or other people here, at this step of work, it's not very good and beautiful, and the feeling quiete disturbing... but in this case, in your case, I found patricia's head already very beautiful and pleasant... that's appear very great for me... I'm very impress by that... and I imagine easily how again better that could be when the missing details will be here.
I wish you to find the solution about your prob... just sorry to don't know max and to don't be able to help you... but I'm sure someones could give you the solution today... I cross my fingers :)

as for the hair, since my own machine lacks a bit of power at the moment you still can wok with layerhair and create a loose ponytail, thats the hairstyling i chose for my 3d scene version and i think that's the easiest way to go... second solution is still, create mainstrands, use both, layerhair and hairfx/shave&ahaircut whatever hairplugin but try to plan te level of detail, more than 1 character with full res hair takes huge rendertimes, thinking of my own attemp a while back when i tried 13000 strands and was goin mad :p more hair, more pain....
and, weeee, of course she looks great. no crits so far since i know your skills and early wip in your case already means awesomeness ^^ keep on rocking!:buttrock::wip:

Ah... multisub material with MR sub scatter skin.
I’ve had a few wrestle matches with that nasty little monster my self.
I lost every time!
It just messes up the settings of the SSS fore some stupid reason.
So if you don’t get any splendid workaround advise from anyone here.
Don’t go there my dear!
About the jumpsuit… It doesn’t have to be dull I think if you do some nice design on it.
Could be cut in some interesting way, have little pockets all over the place and be many shades of blue.
Or it could be more like a cat suit (which I would prefer:) ).
As long as it doesn’t look like the overall of a dirty old car mechanic, it will be good I’m sure.

Hey Jim, thanks for your visit and comment, always much appreciated!!:)
Lolo, ah of course, I understand...and I'm glad to impress you:blush: (http://forums.cgsociety.org/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#), so I'm waiting for advices if it comes to more detailing, always so good to have you around here:love: !
Hey Sacha, thank you for the good hints:) , I'll keep this in mind for later...I try to not think about the hair atm...I've just used the max hair-fx for some fur and such stuff and I'll need a crash course when I come to the hairstyling:scream: ...but right now I want to get the characters done at this level of detail and finally decide about the scene elements I need..., it's not easy to plan my spare time for this and I don't want to run out of time in the end!
Ah Per, you're saving my life...mh, ok, at least my evening:) , I was just about to start the next tests with the multisub material...now I look for another solution, thanks for saving me from this frustration:love: ! And for Patricia's "jumpsuit", when you use this word instead of "overall" it already sounds much more promising...I see what I can do, thanks again!
Hey Roman, nice to see you here for a visit and I'm looking forward to see more of you and your scene during the next weeks!:)
Hi Timur, huh, you think her eyes are not expressive? Now I'm alarmed:curious: (http://forums.cgsociety.org/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#), I thought they are quite ok for this stage, of course more work is needed for a close-up, but now I'll give them some extra attention...thanks for your visit and the critic!:)
Wish you all a nice evening!

hey Sabrina! .. u said u had some problem with the mr skin - shader as multi-sub object material ?? ...
wat exactly is the problem .. coz i've used it lately in one of my characters, it works ok ...
lemme kno wat it is .. i might be able to help u out :P
overall .. ur model is really good! ... just tweak around with the expressions .. :D
even lighting changes the entire look in an instant ... u can do one thing ... u must've already decided the lighting setup for patricia .. like colours most importantly! ... light the model at the very first stage to give u an idea how the skin shader will react to such an environment ... otherwise .. if u work now on the shader n then the lighting .. u'll certainly end up tweaking the shader more n more to suit the new lighting setup ...
pls let me kno if u need to clear anything else .. :p
cheers dear!

Morning Neville...
the MR skin shader works for you in the slot of a muti/-sub object material the same way it works when you put it directly on your object:eek: ??? Are you sure? The light scattering is very different for me:shrug: ...Meanwhile I learned that MR doesn't support the multi/-sub object material, there are also some long threads about this problem in the forum...so I suppose it just can not work without messing around in the mi. files...Now I'm very curious to know how you make this:bounce: !

a very good morning to you Sabrina! :p
well um ... i use the fast skin shader ... n i assign material IDs to the various body parts ...
the problem i faced in all this was that the skin shader took up a lot of memory .. mainly bcoz i had so many of them assigned to different parts ... major overload ...
i then switch the renderer to default scanline and made lil adjustments ... although i cant c wats happening coz its a mental ray shader .. so .. i could only c the changes in the material when i switch it back to the mental ray renderer ... believe me ... it was a nightmare!
hope u get around all this ... ( i kno u will :p ) ...
wishing u da very best of luck!

Thanks for the quick reply Neville, and maybe I'm a little stupid:sad: , but I don't even know why you are switching to scanline...I'm quite sure we are not talking about the same problem:D , but meanwhile I found a solution where no multi/-sub object material is needed (at least I hope so). I have not seen a description of Patricia wearing anything else besides a jump suit, the most detailed descriptions of her in the book are when she is introduced ( mostly face features description) and also I believe (not sure on this though) when she meets Lanier, I think the book goes into a bit of body description there.
As for hair, two descriptions of her hair in the book stick out in my mind, one it is parted down the middle with two braids, the other it is disheveled. I don't know how hard it is to render braids in 3d , but just something you might want to check in the book to see if it can be doable for you.
Your Patricia is looking very good, can't wait to see your entry progress :)

Hello, just saw that you fix above her lips...
Great body modeling (again and I think always i'll tell tou that you are too fast :) )

Quoted for agreement :)
She's looking fantastic - and as the rest says, very natural.
About the Multi/sub and SSS - I'm with a similar problem with blend... it seems SSS doesn't want to mix with other methods, something I found out during the Spectacular challenge when I tried to give it transparency... ah well, I'm glad to hear you've found a workaround for it.

Hey Lolo, I already thought how to explain that she has not the perfect female shape, but I see you understand that she's not supposed to be a super-model and I'm proud that you call her "alive"!:) ... you're doing an incredible work on this challenge Sabie... continue like that, the team is always here to push you ...Ah, that's so good to hear:love: , thank you!
Hey Neville, thanks again for your offer of help and of course I'm glad that you like Patricia:) ...
Wunderbare Arbeit soweit! Hallo Lorenz, oh, das ist schön zu hören! Danke Dir für Deinen Besuch! And I hope to see your own thread updated soon...:)
Hey Sacha, thanks for your cheerful comment ! And I would love to start with the texture painting, but unfortunately some vertex pushing and weighting first...(I'm not sure what is more annoying : unwrapping or rigging? :banghead: )
Hi Linda, ah, this is very helpful! Well, I finally accepted to give her a jumpsuit, I hope to make it look a little more pleasant then the current stage...and I remember the description with the braids, I think I can give this a try, or perhaps a ponytail...and if everything fails I can certainly make something disheveled:D ...Thanks for your visit and the good hint !
Hey Timur...and you are certainly too fast with your wish of folds and creases, this is just the first modeling step and of course her posing is not final - this would look pretty funny, not:scream: ?... So you need to be patient until I finished the more boring part, and then I promise you some nice pleats...as you can see (or not see) the hands are very rough atm, but I can show a close-up later when I refine them! Thanks for your continued support ...
Hey Gunie, thanks for the great motivation:love: ! And glad to hear that you also prefer a "natural" Patricia ! And yes, the shader problems are certainly the result of the bad connection between Max and MR, meanwhile I found some other unpleasant surprises...my poor work around so far is just to not attach anything to the head:shrug: and I've already discovered that I'll have a lot more work with the rigging this way!

Very nice work:thumbsup: and - as been pointed out by many already - she looks very natural. If EON was ever made to a movie, I would like to see Patricia like this in it. Rather than a Starship Troopers kind of good looking / bad acting cast... I did like Starship Troopers though, as a satire that is. I don't mean that your Patricia doesn't look beautiful but she also looks like she could really be a mathematician.
I imagined Patricia a little bit thinner and less muscular 'cause Lanier thought her to look impractical (or something like that, can't remember exactly). But that's totally irrelevant.
Keep goin' and good luck, Sabrina!:)

Hi Timur, hehe, I'm unpatient myself and your suggestions are not bad at all:) ...I just need more time! So stay tuned and I hope in the end you'll be satisfied with the outcome! See you!
Hey Mark, thanks for the praise, glad to hear that you like her so far!
cool body I have an idea for the texture maybe make a badge with the letters "eon" lol just an idea and keep going Hello Tony...mmhhh, perhaps not EON, but a nameplate and a logo on the suit are for sure good ideas:) ! Thank you, Tony!
Hey Kari, nice to see you here for a visit and thank you for the kind comment:) ...as far as I remember Patricias hips are described as a little to wide for her size and it's mentioned that she like some training on a bicycle, maybe I've made a little too much, but fortunately a diet in cg-world is qick and easy:D , so I can adjust this later if she really turns out too fat in her final posing!
Hey Nico, somehow I don't have the feeling of much progress here at the moment, hopefully better next week...but so annoying for you that you still have to wait for your hardware, I cross my fingers that the next week is also better for you! Thanks for dropping by:) !

Patricia's head with a basic texture, skin is still very plastic-like...
For my taste she's too round and "sweet" atm, so I try to work out the bone-structure a bit more, give her some more character...
-sabrina
She surely looks sweet, but I think you can dissolve the sweetiness by adding more textures; darkening the eye orbits' skin, colouring the lips and, of course, creating contrast by adding a very drk hair. The plastic look it's what brings the sweet chick out of the tough Patricia. The modelling is made with finesse. I think she's perfectly built.

Hey Mark, so you like the lower-left pose...it's noted, though I've just tested the rigging and the final pose depends a lot on the environment... thanks for your visit!:)

Hey Cyril, fast? don't know, I've still no environment and have to come back to some concept sketching this week...but I think you're right with the hands, I have the same feeling though I've measured it and it should be ok from the proportions, strange:curious: ...

At this step, it's difficult for me to give help about pose... that especially depend of her place in the composition, and how that interact with the guy ann the environment...
I don't saw hands before, it's the less good things for me on Patricia, maybe it's only due to the fast rigging, and deformations will be corrected when the pose will be choose. If not, you must certainly to chose a pose where the hands are not so much visible, or in the light.
Personaly, I really appreciate the second pose... very interesting character on this view, even if I don't know why she's like that... I mean you must maybe find a pose where she's really stable and not in balance, even if it's action, she doesn't to be in a pose where she seem to fall... a bit like the 1, 2 and 4 pose.
2 solutions for me... stable or really in action, not between the both.
I don't know if that could help... it's just my thought front of these poses.
Nice week for you
Gunilla

Oh, that's really bad news about your computer ... hope you can have it sorted out quickly.
And the rig for Patricia - looks real good (and I'm not surprised) The poses works well too. One thing I notice is that her feet seems a bit small, maybe it's just the viewing angle. Other than that, no crits from me.
Hope you can restore the lost data without any problems and that you will be back with full speed shortly

Good Morning!
Lolo, some really good points about Patricia, I'll keep the thoughts about the posing in mind:thumbsup: ... you're certainly right with the hands, I don't like them myself, so more work is needed, but first I want to decide about the scene and the final framing:) ...... damned... always at the bad moments... I hope you can find quickly the good solution...
You don't know how right you are, I really need a new laptop until this afternoon for presentation, important for me:scream: ...
Gunie, thanks for feeling with me:) ...new laptop is already here and I had a long night with software set-up, now I "only" need to recover the lost datas:twisted: ...and a huge can of coffee!
Tony, naaaa, don't say this:eek: , of course most of the things are on the workstation, just the recent work was on the laptop... I hope I can save all my files and be back in the game tomorrow:) !

Hey Mark, so you like the lower-left pose...it's noted, though I've just tested the rigging and the final pose depends a lot on the environment
Yes, yes, yes! You are absolutely right! The pose should definitely be decided by the environment. It looks to me like your rig will let you do exactly what you want.
I'm sad to know you've had computer troubles and sure hope you get all your data back

I am sorry for your computer Sabrina... Last week my pc died on me too:sad:... I bought a new one now as well :)...
On Patricia, she looks great but as Lemog said, the pose will depend on the environment... Other than that, she looks just about perfect (even though the first pose makes her hand appear huge...LOL)...
Great work... waiting for your updates...

Good Morning!
Hey Mark, actually I'll have to tweak a lot for a final posing, but I think that's ok because we don't need an animation here...thanks for your nice words!:)
Hi George, so you can feel with me about the wasted time for a new set up...so annoying!:banghead: ... and I totally agree about Patricia's hands, I still have to fix this later...thanks for your support!:)
Ah, Tony, always here for some motivation:thumbsup: , that's great, thank you so much!
I'm still struggling here to catch up the lost time I've had with my hardware issues, my regular work needs some attention:shrug: ! But I'm already thinking about the next update and I ask myself if I should change the concept, atm I'm not very happy with my composition and how it works with the characters, maybe I try a more stylized background, actually more in the direction of a movie-poster:curious: ...hope I find the time to show something before weekend!
Thanks to all for the continued support and have all a nice day!

best of luck and cross fingesr on the reapproach, you know, (I know cheap excuse but dont it to stuff the gap) every loss also is a win of the chance of a ne start with the plus of already made expiriences, you ca do it faster and better the next attemp, always so actually best of luck on winning back time :) go go go Sabie ^^ :bounce::bounce::bounce:

Hey Sacha!
i'm feeling with you completely, my machine has broken down last month, thats why i actually work on a p3 1 ghz with 512 mb ram. feels like goin to a dragsterrace with a kiddie tricicle ^^Seeing your entries this is a good proof that it isn't the hardware that counts:wise: ...but I can well imagine that working on this might not be pure fun:twisted: ...and thanks again for your encouragement!:)
Morning Gunie, most of the problems are solved and most of the software and datas are back...well, only most of it:rolleyes:...but I'm more struggling with my delays here and somehow a little of the enthusiasm for the project is gone, especially with my previous concept:shrug:
Currently I'm testing some more eyecatching backgrounds for Patricia, I hope to find some time during the weekend to refine the idea...thanks for your visit and a nice day for you too!:)

I don`t know but I think there are too many wrinkles I think I imagine the clothes tighter
or with less wrinkles
lol I know I`am kinda annoying person hehehhe :bounce:
My compliments! you are still doing aa splendid job on your character!!! The rigging looks perfect! seems you got great skills!:applause:
Lemog
11-17-2006, 03:53 PM
About wrinkles, I think the prob is not cause about too much... but maybe more because these are certainly too similar... few modifications and that will be perfect...
About the new format, of course, that could be greater, maybe better than the previous idea... difficult to be sure, depend of many things... but I really like your new way... maybe it's the reason why that appear better ? :scream:
The only things a little bit disturbing for the moment, is the readablity of the background... a bit difficult to understand, of course, it's normal, it remain much work... so, difficult to imagine at this step the final aspect... I'm waiting for more... one thing keep sure, Patricia's quality desserved this kind of framing
Best of week-end for you :)

That's a very dramatic composition and I love it. If you can get this much drama into your final plus the sense of the giant size of the chamber then I'm thinking it will be fantastic. I love that curved line distortion effect of the plasma tube running into the centre. You keep amazing me with your updates

Hi Fabio, thanks for the compliments:), atm I only see all the things that are still to fix and the remaining work, so it's good to get some motivation!
Morning Lolo, I'm eased to hear that you like the new background, of course it's just a quick test and a lot of work is needed to make it more readable, but I think I'll follow this direction ...thanks for your always appreciated opinion:) !

Don't like the font used in EON title (I think is a sf juggernaut or something from SF family). It looks a little bit star-warshly.I recommend a Compacta black or a The Sans font. if you have a mac with osX tiger give me your e-mail and i'll send you these fonts archived. But the opening into the hard surface looks astonishing. Gives me a strong feeling of tranquility (it will be overpromissing if I'll say happiness, but close...). I love it!
i would change the position of the model, keep her from being cut off like she is now.

Hey Radu, I'm glad to hear that you like the background so far:) ...and thanks for the fonts suggestion, of course you're right that the current type doesn't look so good!
Hi Yaroslav, nice to see you here for a visit! The position of Patricia is due to the fact that I want to hide the (too big etc.) hands until I fixed this:blush: , I think the final position will be more pleasant, thanks for this reminder!:)
Heya Stéph, my spooky friend:D ! I'm glad to see you here again and about your nice comment...for the missing hair of Patricia, she's also very unhappy about it and I'll give her at least a temporary hairdo in the next update! A late good morning everyone...
Hey Timur, atm I like the new concept more and try to go in this direction, more movie poster style...and you're right with the hair, I'll make it more dense for the final render, more hair painfully increases the rendertime, so this is just for the preview! About the hands, they are still my weak point, they resist a good posing and so much tweaking is necessary that I think I have to remodel them completly ...Thanks for the critics:) , some good points for me!
you know I have confident in you whatever u choose I`am with u...
Hello Tony, you're sure:D ? Your critic is always appreciated, but of course I like to hear this ...
Hi Jesus, still balding ...no, I want her away from this look, so she'll get more hair later...thanks for your visit!:)
Hey Gunie, thanks a lot for your cheering here:) ... and I see you like the long hair more, hmmm, I think more testing is necessary ...
Hey Lolo, oh, you really seem to like her this way:D , glad to hear this...and atm I also prefer the right version of the hair, even if this promises to be more work and tweaking...
Hi Claudio, great to see you here for a visit and thank you for the nice words!:)
Hey there, Mark! Yes it was about time to give her some hair, especially because I had no clue how to make this...glad that you like the tests!
Thank you Corrie!:)
Hi Stéph, spooky because of this Heya Sabie ... That's the ghost talking here ! ...a ghost in my thread is of course spooky:D ...and thanks for the cheering, the vote for the longer hair is noted, I'm getting more and more unsure now...

Hey Cyril, thanks for the nice words and I'm not sure if I totally understand your suggestion, but I guess so:) ...I'm getting a little nervous now with my lack of environment at the moment, so I just fix the necessary things for Patricia, bringing her in a final pose and hopefully I have some time left at the end to come back to her and look for the more subtle changes...

Lolo and Gunie, well I have my moments:wise: ...but usually only very few on Mondays:scream: ...
Hey Stephounette, you couldn't resist, eh:D ? But glad to hear that you like her with this hair, though you've voted for the longhaired version...
Hi Radu, wow, that's a nice compliment, thanks:) ! And speaking...not yet...making a completly animatable character is just a dream for me atm:rolleyes: ...
Tony, hehe, you're really persistent with her haircut:D ...I promise that I try some more stylish hairs for her after the challenge, but for this time I really think that the hairs this way fits the best with her description in the book:wise: ...
Finally I fixed these hands, just rendering the update atm...and I had some time in the evening to think about the "clavicle" or gate-opener design, the outcome is quite funny:shrug: ...

Patricia's hands are finally more the way I wanted them...
As you can see I've started some modeling for the foreground, I want to show Patricia whith the clavicle, opening a gate...unfortunately all my ideas are coming out like parts of a bike or pimped vacuum cleaner...so I'm desperately hoping for some good suggestions!

I had to return my copy of Eon to the library, but there are a few descriptions of the clavicle in the book that might help... I just don't remember them, but do remember where they are in the book. One is where she first gets it to try to find her way back to before Death Earth and close to that is when she opens the gate. The other , not sure if this one is a detailed description or not is when she is about 75 yrs old and showing her tools to young Kleopatra in the very end of the book. If I could remember the descriptions in more detail I might be able to offer some suggestions. Patricia's hands are looking great :)

Hi Linda, ah yes, I've missed the description in this last scene, it seems that this thingy looks different in different stages of activities, so I have more possibilities now, very helpful hint Linda, thanks a lot!:)

Morning! Nice update - I wish I could make some suggestion for your "pimped vacuum cleaner" (sooo funny description!) :D
What's a clavicle here? It's not the bone I suppose - or is it? If so you could find tons of refs for human clavicles ... but I have a feeling that's not what you after.
I feel a bit ashamed as for not reading the book
Her hands looks great now and hope you can nail that thingy - I'm confident you will!

Gunie, thanks for having a look at the hands:) , seems like this vacuum cleaner takes all attention away from Patricia:scream: ...and I have to admit that my reading of the book was a very quick one, so I'm always a little unsure about some details...
Lolo, so I've made you curious? The bad thing is that I also can not really imagine this:D ...
The "clavicle" is a thing to open a gate, of course the gate is not a simple door, naaaa, it's a gate in the continuum of space and time:wise: ...and I've also thought of the bone, but that makes even less sense with the description I remember!
I'm just searching the sites in the book with the descriptions and model something new this evening...

hey sabrina... ok.. Hands look very nice.. As for opening the door, you could use a large lever of some sort... either attached to the side of the door or the floor... This will not stray too far from the book and is a common among sci-fi films and books... Also the doors on Axis city are voice activated so, if you want to use that, you could... finally, the door to the library is not described as having handles or anything, so you can use a door without a handle (maybe motion activated)... Finally when they are going for the signularity, they enter through a hatch (i pressume Lost-like)... Hope this helped...

Good Morning!
Hey George, oh, I really must be clearer with my explanations here, I'm not looking for a door handle or a bone:scream: ...the "CLAVICLE" is a special instrument described in the book to open a (virtual) gate into another dimension, something like the wormhole of the scifi-writers...here are some descriptions of the book:
"...something saddle-shaped with protruding handles..." "like a divining rod with a radar dish attached..." and finally something like an old-fashioned Japanese pillow with handlebars like you find it on a bike...
Don't know if this explanation makes things less confuse here:rolleyes: , perhaps my intention gets clearer with the next update...thanks for your visit and the support:) !

Morning Sabie...
maybe another bad idea, but anyway my morning vision about the way to open something virtual.
...and why not a kind of virtual cercle of wavy water, all right and floating in the air, just need to pass the hand inside (the extremity of the hand disappear inside, or only few fingers) to open the door to the other dimension... with maybe a zone around with difraction... to simulate the reality distorsion...
...and if it's not made with kind of water, that also could be something as turning stars... as a mini solar system (or constellation) where it only need to touch one planet, or a comet queue to open the other dimension...
just few ideas of a tiredness brain :scream: hahahaha

This work is so good I can't offer much except for cheering. I think the new clavicle design is better and yes, it does look delightfully sci-fi. I also like Lemog's idea of a patch of rippling spacetime in front of the clavicle - a hole opening up to the next universe. I'm sure a really nice effect could be added in post work.

Hey Lolo, tired brain?? That's a really great idea:love: ...I've already planned some effects to show the gate is about to open, but on the ground where Patricia is standing...when I have it right in the air with Patricia touching it the strange "clavicle" won't be necessary and I can also give Patricia a more motivated posing...at least I try how this will fit in the background, thanks a lot!:bounce:

ahh, now I see that you have choosed or changed to the same scene like me (you have talk about that). The clavicle description in the book has confused me a lot, but I think you're on the right way (similar to my imagination). Good Morning!
Sorry for the late replies, I've been away early for a long weekend...and now I'm back with a bad cold:sad: ...
I only have one suggestion and that is maybe change the end shape of the handles, it is looking a bit phallic on that part of it . Hey Linda, not intentional of course, a totally innocent smoothing effect, but thanks for the hint, if this thing will be in the final scene I'll take care of it!
Hi Tony, well, so far the only reason for me to keep it in the scene:D ...thanks for your visit !
Hey Jesus, thanks for having another look in here and unfortunately I know well about the time problem ...good to hear that you like the latest additions and I agree that there are some similar entries here at first sight, but with different focus and details, so I'm not really worried about that:) ...
Hi Jim, great to see you back commenting here, though I've just discovered you've changed the place to continue with your scene! I'll visit you there of course, too curious to miss your next steps:) ...And thanks for your nice words, some gate opening effects will come here for sure!
Heya Roman, nice to see you here again and I can well understand your confusion about the clavicle...and I'm not sure if this nasty green glowing really helps to give it the right look! Somehow I've missed the stage of exploding planets, galaxies and plasma bombs:D , so I'm not familiar myself with these science fiction effects...thanks for your visit and I hope to see an update of your concept soon!
Hey Tiziano, thanks for dropping by and your nice words! And of course it doesn't matter here if 2d or 3d, if it's not about special technical advices...thoughts about composition, color scheme, lighting and texturing are the same, so your comments are very appreciated:) !
Weee, it's Stéph again:bounce: ! Always glad to see you here, and thanks for liking the "doorknob"! And you're for sure not alone with not understanding the scene this way:scream: ...
With all the "clavicle"-confusion here I just see that it doesn't work...at least not the way I want! And I begin to be really annoyed about this thing and the whole scene, I hope it's only due to my flu and headache:banghead: ...perhaps a little break is a good idea and then I try to follow Lemog's suggestion about the gate...
Have all a great start in the week!

Good morning Sabie... it's so good to see you here and at first view feeling better...
About the idea for clavicle... agree with you that at this moment, the solution is not evident.
A morning idea... maybe you go into your scene, and try another framing, another point of view... choose some of these point of view... and maybe with another framing, with another pose for her, or turned differently that could give you the good way/idea about how open the gate...
About clavicle... I saw yesterday in an old book a real clavicle to open something (clavette)... perhaps a door but more to attach two things. I don't make scan of it because that seem more as antic technology and I don't know exactly how that could match with your scene...
I hope a soon solution for this problem... nice day for you

Morning Sabie! I'm glad to see the icecream worked and you're feeling better.
As for the clavicle... maybe you could do it litterarely by using a real huge clavicle (http://www.sci.utah.edu/%7Esimpson/documentation/projects/annotation/webdocs/image_gal_files/miscellaneous/clavicle.jpg)? It could be from someone with special powers or something else that would make it powerful enough... and then hide it in glow. The clavicle has a rather beautiful shape, don't you think?
I'm sure you figure it out, just let it rest for some days and you'll get there :)
Edit: And now I see your comments about Glühwein ... I love that! We have "Glögg" that is similar but I'd prefer Glühwein anytime

Morning Lolo, I didn't know that there is a technical meaning for 'clavicle' beside of the anatomical one...so even if it's not interesting for the scene I'm really curious to see what you've found there, of course only if you'll find some time to scan it! And thanks for always being here with some good "morning ideas":) !
Morning Gunie...you're thinking of a kind of magic bone:scream: !? The new pose is really good. You've done a superb job with that modeling Sabrina. Patricia is starting to look so life-like it's spooky. I like the sense of the alternate universe appearing in those wisps of light too

Hey Lolo, good that you like the pose:) , I'm about to collapse it now so I can work on the problem areas and clothes...I'm not sure about the hot spots:shrug: , you didn't like the first version with the warm colors...I upload a few variations later!
...and yes, clever to have a "plan B" for the heating, I'm sure it's somewhere on our to-do-list , just behind the new roof:scream: , just an endless story with an old house...but with a little luck the heating system is repared this weekend!
Hey Gunie! YOINKS?! So I guess you like the last update:D , thanks...and the weather could be worse, no ice and snow thankfully:rolleyes: ...!
Hi Tony, a 3d heating system for me!? so nice, at least heart warming:love: ...but you don't like Patricia's expression? I've not planned to change it, for me it fits the situation quite well, but I'll have another look at it now:) ...
Hey Mark, thanks for your nice comment, glad to hear that you like the update, always very motivating for me:) ...

The first version of the text looked very odd, already mentioned by black_hand_77 and Lemog, so I've tried another font...I think somethink like this should work better, suggestions are very welcome...and I'm also unsure about the suggested variations of the "world", more something galaxy-like or some nice nebulas...?

Cheering from me! I also like the image on the right most. The nebulae have a sort of mystical alchemy look about them which I reckon fits in nicely with that part of the book. Up until then the book was all hard science, but at that part it became hard science mixed with a sort of mystery and deep intuition. So I know they were supposed to be nebulae but I think as an image it works on multiple levels!
With the font, I like the text in the word 'EON' in both versions - perhaps the one on the left a bit more. The extended letter spacing works well. Perhaps the letter spacing in the 'Greg Bear' text could be increased so the words match the width of the word 'EON'. In typography I'm always lining up edges or widths or heights and it often helps. I would also bring the 'Greg Bear' text much closer down to the 'EON' text so the eye sees one collection of type elements rather than two collections of type elements. That way the eye sees a cleaner overall image

Hi there! Sure, just as the rest I prefer the right one - great magic feel. As for the text I was just going to say almost exactly the same comments as Mark. I think the thin font looks best and the idea of spreding the name and lower it sounds like a good solution. Perhaps you could try some overlay effect to have it blend into the background a bit so it doesn't steal the attention from her.
Great work as usual, it looks like you've warmed up by now :D

Hi Sabrina,

I agree to mdavid that lowering down Mr. Bear's name nearer to EON will make it more unified..cheers!

Heya Mark, glad to hear that you see the scene the same way I do:) , I also had the feeling that there is a certain break in the story - and thanks a lot for your advices concerning the typography, exactly the basic information I need because i have no clue of text layout:bowdown: ...
Morning Gunie, so I hear the same from you about the text, very good! And I also like the thin font more, I'll try how it looks with an overlay, thanks for the suggestion:) ...
Hey Raffy, thanks for your comments, very appreciated:) - and though I'm quite satisfied with the posing now I'll have another look at the right hand!
Atm I'm rigging the Lanier model and texturing his clothes, I want to put him in the background, watching Patricia but standing clearly seperated from her, just to enhance the feeling that Patricia is alone in this moment...

Hey Sabie! Thanks for dropping by my eon thread and thanks for the push. :) I'll be posting an update this week.
Did you get your heating problem solved? If not, I hope you get this fixed soon.
I like what you have so far. For the world, have you experimented with planets? Perhaps revealing the partial surface of a planet within the gate would make it look more interesting.
Also, Patricia's pose looks good except for her reaching left hand. I think it would look better if her wrist was twisted a little more towards the viewer so that her hand reads better. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. :D
Anyway, keep up the hard work and I look forward to your next update! :)

Hello, Sabrina!
Look, I have a question for you that's bothering me for some time. I have seen that a lot of the contestants conceive their works as a movie/book poster (with the EON logo, the headline "The world within worlds" and the name of the author). Is a mandatory request for this contest? And I'm asking this because I was unable to find this request any page dedicated to EON Challenge. Otherwise, I like your "clavicle" device and the mistery that surrounds Patricia when trying to touch it. Good luck!
Radu.

Good Morning!
Hey Cyril, thanks for cheering and a preview with Lanier is coming soon!:)
Thanks for the visit Timur, and I think Patricia's pose is more or less final, just a little tweaking and polishing;) ...
Hi Jesus, thanks for asking and yes: the heating problem is fortunately solved:rolleyes: !
I've tested different approaches for the gate and I'm quite satisfied with the look now, so there won't be major changes...And for you it's the left hand that you don't like? So a little tweaking is still necessary, I'll see what I can do to make it more convincing! Thanks for your support!:)
Hey Radu, thanks for your nice comment:) and concerning your question, the answer is definitely NO, you are not obliged to add any text, title or logo... the challenge is just to create material for the promotion of a (potential) blockbuster film based on EON, and so a kind of movie poster format with free space enough for adding the title or casting seems to be a good idea for me:wise: ...of course you're free to make an illustration without any text...you're only asked to add the comment that your scene is inspired by Greg Bear's EON if you post or use your picture elsewhere...

Just a preview of the scene with Lanier, I had a clear intention with this background figure, but I'm not sure if it works the way I want...Lanier should give the scene some more depth and also show that Patricia is alone and apart from her friends after her decision to search for her lost earth...

Hey Sabrina, the new font/typography is excellent. I like that a lot.
I also like your idea of having Lanier appearing detached/separate. You're right in that Patricia goes through the gate alone, but it also seems to fit elegantly with the concept of Lanier being a partial. It's a clever way of suggesting that while being true to the idea that the partial would seem real.
So no crits from me. Just more cheering. This was an excellent update :)
Lemog
12-20-2006, 07:08 AM
Morning Sabie... not sure at the first view... but finally, I mean Lanier could be good like that... a bit in the dark... but enriched by ray lights wihch comes of the background, rays especially materialized by kind of fog wich seem to leave of the ground... you also could re-enforce Lanier with a aura around him, as a edge of light... I hope my vision is understandable :scream:
An idea about her right hand... There's something a bit disturbing, but previously I don't know what exactly because when you have this kind of care, front of something unknown... you certainly have an attention and a pose with much tension... maybe the strange feeling is only because each finger are in the same line... make the exemple with your own hand... make tension and look... each finger comes placed very differently... the position, the angle, even if it's very small as difference, that make something not uniform... (I'm again afraid to don't be very clear with my explanation...)...
I hope that could help Sabie... and a nice day for you :)

Hey Mark, yes, your suggestions for the text worked good:thumbsup: , thanks again, I like it much more this way...and also glad to hear that you have no crits:) !
Hi Lolo, some volumelight around Lanier will certainly come, good idea to accentuate him this way:) ...and thank you also for your suggestion about the hand, I'll have another look at the pose and try to make it more convincing...and I will never again try to save time with a quick and dirty rig, meanwhile I've lost so much time with adjustments for the different poses:banghead: ...

Lemog
01-04-2007, 09:38 AM
It mean you can keep the hands like that... okay for me... more light effects and of course more atmosphere effects... to have an stronger mood...
...maybe some light/color effects like boreal aurora... that could give some interesting touches... almost magical and mysterious... :)
mdavid
01-04-2007, 12:51 PM
Hey Sabrina, it's never bothered me that you're going for a minimalist look because I figured you were just being true to the book - there were no structures in that section of the Way. I really like the new lighting effects by the way. The light hitting Patricia's left hand is especially beautiful and realistic. Wonderful stuff!
I like Lemog's idea for atmospheric effects. I'm thinking of something similar that might be helpful (if it's not helpful then don't hesitate to discard it!) At that stage of the book the northern corridor was starting to glow from the approaching plasma front, which might be fun in case you want ideas for the background. But I understand that time is limited and I already love what you're doing. Best of luck to you as you sprint to the finish

Hey Sabrina,
Your last update is very good - it looks like you are about to finish :).
I agree with Lemog about more atmospheric effects, it will add more depth to your backgrounds. like your lighting a lot! I would probably make lighting on her left hand brighter...
I have a little note: Patricia's left hand looks a bit strange, I guess because it's too thin. It may be your deformations collapsing the top of her hand. if you will have time and possibility, you could look at that hand and may be make a little corrective modeling on it.
Waiting for the next update!

I like much the plasma effect... and that could be more visible and contrasted... light effects are a great addition... and more again will be better for me... especially in the low part, where it's really dark... and around her... and why some big stones on the floor, not much (1, 2 or 3...), but just to don't have a ground to much uniform ?

There is just one thing that feels a bit strange to me ,the cross(i hope i say this right in english)between her legs seems just a tiny little bit blown up.Maybe tighten that a bit up.Really sorry for my english,i hope you understand.
Second thing is that I think while they are doing researches in the stone, they proberly have a lot of stuff on them, and so some pockets ,zippers, etc would make her costume a bit more rich and fonctional.that's just my two cents.
Big up Sabrina!!!

Hi Fabio, great to see you here again and thanks for the nice comment! And I'm also very eased to see that you're updating your trailer thread again, I'm crossing my fingers that you can make it in time:) !
Hey there Nico, hmmm, yes, I've lost a little contrast on the background with all the fog and haze added...I see if I can adjust this, thanks for the hint and your visit;) !
Hehe Mark, I always have a bright smile on my face when I see the innocent bystander in your avatar...and your comment is just the last push I need to finish the scene now...big thanks for your great support here:love: !
Hi Mark, thats nice to hear, thank you:) !
So, I just have to make a few little adjustments and hope that I can upload my final picture soon:bounce: ...

Hey Jesus, huh:eek: , I only got the reminder for the old deadline, no notification for the new, thanks for this information, I'd certainly have missed this:twisted: ! But my time is already planned for other things and so I have to finish this now. I hope you can make good use of this extra time, I'll still follow your progress:) !
Hey there Neville, always bringing your good mood in my thread:) , thanks for your nice words and the good wishes!
Hehe, Tony, you're "the best" !
Though I just discovered the extended deadline, I'll finish now with my planned scene, in my thoughts I'm already in other projects...What I need now is a long and relaxed weekend and then onto new adventures in the next week:cool: ...and of course following the threads of the challengers which are still busy:) ...

After exploring the disturbing secrets of the suddenly appeared asteroid in the orbit and helplessly watching the terrible nuclear war on earth there are mainly 2 different directions for the people on the asteroid to decide between:
Some of them want to stay in the orbit and help the poor rest of manhood to survive and rebuild the earth. Another part of these people decide to go further in the future, facing the oncoming menace of alien invasisons...
Only Patricia is not part of one of these two groups, the only thing she wants is to go back home...back to the world that not longer exists and back to the beloved people not longer alive...With the all destroying plasma front already approaching there are only minutes for Patricia's lonely decision to find and open the one gate that will bring herself back home... back to her world within the worlds...

Bravo!! Much cheering from Sydney. This thread has been wonderful to follow. Patricia is beautifully done and the atmospheric effects give the scene a depth and a suggestion of mysticism perfect for that part of the book. Congratulations on an excellent finish, Sabrina. I hope you enjoy your (well deserved) rest before you take on your next adventure

Hello Sabie...
well done and well finished... stones are simply great in your pic and that enrich surely this part...
All works very good for me... clean but not poor... while watching this poster, we can imagine a lot about the story... a vision wich could give the envy to know mode, to read more about the book and the Eon universe.
Congratulations for this great moment of challengre... that was as always very intense and very interesting, and I'm sure that each time you participate, you are always progressing in your art and in your skills.
Cheers... and of course... my wishes are with you for the final way
PS: take some rest... and show us soon maybe a wallpaper more adapted to our screens... :scream: thanks for the show...

Hey Sabrina,
Nice to see your strong finish here:thumbsup:  . I really like the Patricia character , the position of her hands and face, great job. I also like the background style. To bad Patricia didn't quite make it back home. Good luck with this and see you later.
