Since I have to read the book first in my amazingly limited spare time, I wont be posting any concept art in the near future. However, I wanted to post 'something' so here is a test of the earth done in photoshop. It was very simple and took about 10 minutes. I will post a small tutorial if anyone is interested. I may have something like this in the background of my image.
Cool start!.....i have to read the book too...gosh!looks huge but very exciting. ^_^
About 10 minutes in PS?!
Well let's see a tutorial about that! If you have the time of course! :D

Welcome back, Dale. I'll be looking forward to seeing what you come up with for the challenge... but in the meantime, YES, definitely post a tutorial. I got some great Photoshop tips from your Spectacular entry! :)

10 min. Holy Cow, post it!! I think the atmosphere is too tall and soft. Last time I was on the way back from the moon ; ) it was barely visible. Looks good.

Thanks everyone. I will make a tutorial when I have time. I just got back from a long weekend away and so I have no time for painting. Back to work tomorrow.
Also, if anyone is interested, we just found out my wife is expecting another baby :bounce:

Congrats on the baby!
Thanks very much. We are over the moon.
I made a tutorial last night but I didn't have time to put it online. I will do it tonight. :wip:
I want to do something organic, something alien.
I am only half way through the book and there has been only a fleeting glance of a frant. I feel that I might have to read the other books too. :( I will never get started at this rate...

Here you go. I promised a quick tutorial.
Earth tutorial (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=3920193#post3920193)
Enjoy.
I am still ploughing my way through the book. Phew!
Waiting for inspiration. I feel like I am being left behind

This is what I think a frant looks like. I am still only half way through the book so there are probably better descriptions later on. If there are any errors here, please let me know.
For example, the head is very thin but I am not sure in which dimension it is supposed to be flattened.

Hi there! looks very interesting your Frant concept hehe. I imagine the frant head like, for example, smahing a human head by the sides and front, a little but intense eyes, clear forehead, knock-kneed, and maybe a bigger torso.
Anyway, looks cool:thumbsup: Good luck!!

This is just a quick test of an idea I had on how to do centre-offset cylindrical mapping in photoshop. I will make a short tutorial later perhaps. I probably wont use this technique but it was interesting to do.

"All the other nonhuman researchers were surrounded by similar fields, the most striking being a sinuous, snake-bodied, four-headed being suspended in coils in a levitated sphere of deep green liquid, like a preserved specimen."

Beautiful work so far. The frant looks excellent - those extra joints in the limbs look nicely alien! Thanks for the Earth tutorial too

Hey Dale,
I like your textured tube, could be a nice starting point for something here:) ...
But of course the real eyecatcher is your floating sphere, again a very alien look:scream: ...
Waiting for the next ideas!

Great job on the latest alien, Dale!
Not that it's an integral part of the stroy like the Frants, but I had pictured this with just one body and 4 heads. What's funny about your depiction is that now, they compleely remind me of the Brothers, a race of aliens from Greg Bear's "The Anvil of Stars" (except they didn't have the sphere around them.) If it's not a coincidence, I don't know whether to blame you or Mr. Bear! :)
Keep up the good work... Any thoughts about what scene you're going to focus on yet?
Nice job on the tutorials, btw.
