thnx for all nice words ppl! :) Nice to see lots of familiar faces in this challenge!

I quickly overviewed the describtion of EON and I think I alredy find a theme that I wanna paint it. I'll go for the Death scene, and will try to catch the very next moment after fire blazes the whole city away. I guess it would look like after an atomic bomb is being dropped and u can still see fire wind going away from u, while u r standing in the ground zero. Lots of destruction, smoke and ashes, red sky, ppl and buildings which have been there r still standing at the same spot not knowing what hit them... although they r all dead.

10-15-2006, 05:36 PM
looks cool, I like the mood and the pov... maybe put the camera even lower, same height as the characters? usually more dramatic.

Maybe you can try to vary the color palete a bit, some hints of blue or grey coming from the sky and lighting some parts?

keep it up!

thnx buddies!

TheFirstAngel: thnx! Im trying to catch the right mood at the moment.. not so much happy with the composition and other stuff, but Im glad that that thing is working for u.

NathanielWest: same as to Angel, thnx for comfirming that Im on the right track!

mv: great suggestions! on my next sketches there will be lower angle of the camera and there will be some more colors. Dont wanna create so monochromatic piece as its at the moment. Im also thinking of a landscape format.. to get the whole environment in it, not just some buildings. thnx!

adib: thmx to u as well! Will try some more versions of the composition anyway, to find which one suits best.

mv
10-15-2006, 06:06 PM
landscape format can be great that's sure, but I think you have a nice idea with this format too, but what it lacks to justify this format, is some subject in the upper half of the pic, I think. Maybe some elements suggesting a story, a crashing helicopter, I don't know. Something happening more than just fire.

Damn, thats good! The Death, indeed.

I would almost say 'stop drawing, you're done'. Sometimes you nail it early. But you are still working, so I will add some suggestions. I love the suggestion of large 'shards' like giant teeth coming down on the humans. Maybe darken some of the vertical elements seen in the center and right, those bits of architecture. That will heighten the contrast to the fire elements. I also love the bits of fire seen at ground level. Its not just raining fire and death, its coming from the ground itself.

I would like to see more defined humans, not more detailed but perhaps darker, perhaps a few larger. Having the ragged edges is perfect--the fire is tearing at their very shape.

A great start!

hi guyz and gals! Long time no see, lots of work here. Today I finally found some spare time to use it on this project, so here is another sketch. I listened to ur suggestions and I think its much better than my first try. Thnx a lot! U r in great help :)

Gorgeous work so far, Blaz! Really like the extreme palette and contrast you're going for. The wider canvas looks nice, but have you considerred moving that primary character a bit out of the center, maybe over to the left a bit more? Just an idea, maybe make the figure 1/3 of the way over from the left side... but no matterr what, looking really good!

hi ppl! Thanks for stopping by my piece, although it hasnt been updated for a long time now. Its just that I have so much to do beside this challenge that I rarely find the time to work on it. But I'll finish this one. And now to replies...

tingham: I used to start painting with texture brushes as well, but than I often stuck doing just one part of the image, while I wanted to finish it with details. Now its easier to do an image as a whole, coz u dont get distracted with details until u wanna to. Thnx!

Ivy00: Im just going back to portrait, but I have to widen the canvas size to show some more than just one building... the story is, after all, that the whole continent is burning.. so its hard to imagine that if u see just one statue in a first plan. Thnx!

prabath: thnx! Im glad hearing that Im going to the right direction!

walrus: Im always glad to get a word or two of u :) I already moved the character to the left and ofcors looks 1000 times better. Im open for some more suggestion! thnx

Schnubbi: thnx man!

TheFirstAngel: thnx! I was affraid at first that with widen the canvas will take away that gigantic feeling of the scene, but I think with my next submission I'll fix that with even larger hight.

Nazirull: I'll get that Manson song.. I hope it'll help build even more dramatic scene ;) thnx!

icedeyes: thnx! I'll try keeping it that way.

Slav: thnx buddy!

Squibbit: thnx to u too!

element5: hey man! nice to see u in this challenge as well! thnx for stopping by!

sirBS: Im glad to hear that! thnx

matthewpl: details will come, no worries! thnx

matlock: thank u!

OrO: I hope I wont disapoint u by make a pic more portrait like again.. but its the high that I wanna point out here. Next step is designing the lements for the scene. Thnx for poping in!

brrrhmmm: thnx for showing what ppl r doing! Lots of contestants, hehe..

Silveraxe: thnx, I'll try to keep it warm and chaotic!

bouboul: thnx for watching, and nice crit!

Arctis: thnx man!

tastatura: Im so glad that its already seen what I wanted to point out (scale and chaotic feeling, dynamics and so on). So I guess I can go to the next step of my process than. Yey! thnx

abscnth: I hope I'll finish it and that u'll feel the same than! thnx

Hi Blaz, your image is looking great so far... just one thing, in the left corner of the city, if you warp a bit more it could help you in the composition perspective, also if i were you i would move a bit to the right the huge structure because the higlights are just in the geometric center of the composition making the hotspots to lost some focus... I didnt know how to explain good what i mean because of my bad english hehe but i made a diagram... just my opinion but hope it could help you... looking forward on your development.. good luck

Absolutly amazing atmosphere Ninja!!!
just love your painting!!!
Indeed, maybe if you bring in some greener tones in the shadow parts of the pics, i think the warmer tones will even come out more.
Maybe you could try some more blur on the foreground elements,or in the other way on the background to increase even more the depth.
Anyway,just superbe!

Great advances in the project, as we can see! Looks excellent already.

Just be carefull with figures in the foreground - if they get too much detail or even visible faces, they might tend to take the attention from the main part (area of interest) and ruin the composition. Slightly cooler tones for deep shadows, at least in the foreground, might enhance the illustration as well.

I did some corrections on the sky, especially in the upper right corner, where could u see a fire blaze just fading away from camera view and destructing everything on his way. At the moment there r some cloud photos in the image, but just to show the direction where Im heading to. Next step is to add some more cool tones and colors to first plan (like some of u pointed out.. very good suggestion) to seeprate first plan from background and to make orange in the back to glow more. Thnx for all the support guys!

ICHOMA: thnx! That means that Im succeeding :D

riki: huh thnx! I wish u would be one of the judges, hehe

OKMER: Hi man! Thnx for stopping by! Im not sure about bluring coz Im going for more hard edged brush strokes here, but Im definetely bringing some cooler tones into the image. As u can already see, there r some blue tones in the foreground now. I hope it helps reading the depth better.

Norberg: thnx man! It means a lot to me to heat such a nice words from u!

Ranath: Thnx man!

Lovas: Hi my friend! So nice to see u poping into my thread. Im really glad to hear a suggestion or two from u. As u see I did use some blue tones in first plan and I think it really works better. And I'll try to keep those figures as simple as they should be. I hope to see u later when I'll do some more progress, to hear what would u have to say than. Its always great to hear ur advices. Whoo,Ninja,I just love that flip you did!Maybe it is because we were getting used to the pic before but I think it's really really cool!!!(maybe better say hot there!!hé,hé)

If i may say,it's maybe just that the smoke separating the foreground from the big building that takes a bit away our eye too much from the rest, and i got a bit a less depth feeling in that part of the pic(sorry, but difficult to tell in english, hope you understand.)
Anyway,really love your work mate!!

i like the swift movement of the original comp better. personally, but the flipped version draws more attention to the sunlight cast thru the buildings, bottom right with the characters, that is better. but i don't like the angled land supporting the building in that version..hehe so i go for the original composition..

of course just my tastes.

jaw dropping regardless.

Hi, Blaz. Happy New Year!
I think the composition with the character on the left and the building on the right works much better. It's because of the city in the lower right. Because it is angled upwards, the the fire is providing stripes of light that guide the eye. When your eye gets to the lower right corner, the lines of fire in the city cut the eye off from leaving the page and curve it back upwards back into the scene, which is of course what you want any good composition to do: Keep the eye from falling off the page. The flipped composition's lower right corner almost acts as an arrow pointing the viewer off the page.

Just my thoughts on it. Good luck!

-mike

I wouldn't go with the flipped version. The original seemed to direct the eye better to the huge firestorm at the base of the large building, which I think is the point. In the flipped version eye naturally wants to move away from the explosion (because western people are used to read images from left to right rather than right to left)

Another vote for the original version, here.

In the flipped one my eyes go around a bit, then slide off the image, the original keeps my attention on the details way longer.

Looking great, Blaz! I'm not sure what else you have planned, but 8 days should be plenty: This piece has so much drama to it that there's very little stopping you from calling it done now and few would worry about it! The main area grabbing me as unfinished is the lower left, those stairs you started to sketch in and didn't complete. But as for the rest, curious to know what else you have in store (guess I'll see over the next 8 days!) But either way, fantastic work!

hi walrus! Thnx for stopping by. I always love to reads ur comments, there is so much to pull out of them. About my piece.. the sky is just a sketch, as well as stairs and a part of that ruins in the upper left corner. I also plan to add some more defined shapes to the background and show a chaos in the back of the main building. All I've done till now was paiting in 25% of original size, so u can imagine how it looks if u close it up :( messed up completely, without details. And more than Im looking at this piece and compare it to all master pieces in CG talk gallery, more I see how far is it from what I imagined at the start. I just cant see depth in my piece, colors r frustrating me, and so on...

Just gotta get those foreground elements to match up with the background that's all. Midground seems kinda skewed, or a weirdness happening as well. hi blaz,

I wouldn´t concern much about the colors you´ve choosen. You are nearly the only one using this color range which is refreshing different compared to all blue-filled images. But I know what you mean.

- currently the image is tending to have an analogous color-scheme - maybe it could worth it trying to apply a complementary color-scheme (http://www.tigercolor.com/color-lab/color-theory/color-harmonies.htm) on this scene. Keep the established red/orange/yellow for the enlighten parts and use some blue/green for the shadow parts. But I would Keep the red/orange/yellow the dominant color and use the complementary colors blue/green just for accents. Overall this will increase the contrast.

-You also can increase the dramatic look by giving the fire an additional color glow especially on the burning people in the foreground. A wee bit green e.g.

-Maybe the sky at the top doens´t neccessarily needs to be this dark. It could be a bit brighter. That would give you more room to add depth and seperate it better from the foreground building on the left side. but in case the brighter top of the image leads the viewers eye out of the image it is of course better to keep the current situation.

-I very much like the chaos within your image. I hope you can keep this sort of chaos throughout the detailing process. But do not forget to set a center of interest to add a bit control into the chaos. At this stage the viewers eye is jumping around without beeing able to rest somewhere.

Just some response to your great image - I hope some of the suggestions are helpful

best wishes
Fahrija

I like the purple fog tones you've added in the back, Blaz, they really work nicely to distance some portions and bring in some other colors. Have you considerred pullingthose purple-greys out of the foreground character? I mean, he's in the far foreground, so he would have the least grey fog on him: If he had the strongest values, it would really bring him into the foreground... Then, it may make him pop too much, I don't know. But hey, at least it's something to think about: I didn't want to just let you get away with a "Wow, looks great!" post. :)

One other thing to consider: If this is the Death, what about some streaks of fire in the sky, signs of missles or areal bombardment, so it doesn't just look like a city on fire... just a little more to tie it back in with the book.

Anyhow, good luck with it, as always. I still think it looks great. :)

Do u guyz think that those missle streaks should be replaced with fire streaks? Should I bring more glowing stuff in?

The whole world was being swept by a crown fire, with the flames leaping not from tree to tree, but from city to city, continent to continent.

People were no more substantial than pine needles."

And a bit bigger version for as always..

Really dramatic and apocalyptic style. So, final result is like i imagine it, eye cathing and perfect composition.

Good work !

Your piece has caught my attention very soon, and has held it until the last, even though the subject itself was far from pleasant.

I kept coming back hoping to see the 'final' step up, believe me, I cheered when I saw it.
Great emotion and technique both, stunning work!

This one is so great! The lighting, the dynamic angle, all together just a superb piece of work. Very nice brushwork as well. You've got a real winner here, one of the most eye catching images in the challenge! Keep up the great work!
