Interesting challenge however I did not read the book and I`m a little lost in all those book descriptions. I think the best is to make something abstract.

Good luck to all!

Ha! I was sure to find you on this challenge as well :)

I'm also confused by the complexity of the subject. But hopefully
it will make this challenge more interesting. Good luck:thumbsup:

arturro - yes SF is my favourite theme, I think your too :scream: and yes IMO this is a fair approach to work on something not exactly guided by the book. Good luck and have fun

makaron - thank you, you too :)

Claireabella - thx

TheFirstAngel - thx, I`m looking forward especially for your awesome images :deal:

adonihs - Thank you. I hope too, I couldn`t finish the last one

Gunilla - Glad to see you here too. Yes it`s a good approach you have.

Wysocki - Witam, I`m not sure it`s a good idea, the rules tells about describing what is in the book or in the short descriptions... not in the future...

Merci Thierry,

Maybe I will buy the book anyway, it`s certainly a good source of infpiration...

I really want to make something almost abstract for the illustration challenge, something nice and inspirational and not precise and realistic... a sort of well devopped concept sketch :arteest:

Ok let`s start with something.. as I wrote somewhere I want to make an abstract concept to not be penalised by the fact I did not read the book (and probably will not have the time to read it).

Anyway I read somewhere thers a harbor with ships so this is a verry vertical image with a platform on the left where some ships will start.

Any comments are welcome.

wow!! very nice start indeed!!

are u gonna add a ship over there ??? ... or someone waiting on the platform ... ?? ...

hehe ... man! cant wait to c d updates! :) :) :) :)

I like the idea,,and foremost,,the use of 3D for getting the foundation and correct ligting and shadows..
keep this up man,,should work out just well

Very nice 3d concept/sketch! I can see the harbor already with a ship just ariving. Nice concept!
Keep going..

Wysocki

Hmm, looks good it will be in 3D or 2D ?? Maybe create some poster picture will be bright idea ;) . . .

Nomad
10-07-2006, 12:43 PM
nwiz25 - thx, yes I will add ships starting, landing etc...

TheFirstAngel - thank you, I have to work alot to well balance the layout

AIRz - thx, yes 3d to set up the lighting and certainly alot of 2d to finish the details, especially the textures...

MVDB - glad to read you see already the harbor :)

Wysocki - thx - I`m making a mix od 2d and 3d... certainly the final result will look as a realistic painting... I`m ofted creating complex 3d shapes but making textures on the final image... all depends what will be faster to do. A poster? yes it have to be iconic and the concept must speak by itself.

Next progress on the sketch, I have refined the buildings with a little more details and added a ship.
I`m not sure about lighting, it looks too much as a Coruscant Star Wars scene. I`m thinking to make something closer to the first one or something darker. No idea if there is a sunrise and sunset in the Chamber heh.

ukitel - thx, not too fast with the textures... I`m not sure about the whole idea ... just exploring and getting comments :D

nwiz25 - thank you. Yes it looks as a strong concept but I`m afraid it`s too much used in many images... something more original maybe...

This is looking really great so far, I can't wait to see it come together! I know this is just a concept sketch, but I'd like to see some harsher lines, right now it all looks a bit soft to me, so it looks a bit like a clay model. I feel like this one is going to be awesome, keep up the good work :)

Continuumx - thx, yes of course there will be many things in the forground.

ramy badie - thank you, harsher lines you say? good idea... I still thinking about the design of the buildings... more human like or more alien like... this is the question...

NinjaA55N - yes a piece for the portfolio is a good motivation :D

rahulmehta - thx, what do you mean by good camera angle?

Hi

I have the same problem like you. I don`t have the time to read the book. But i think you do it well. The picture have a future look. And the town can be everywhere in the story of EON.

Go on. Very cool!

cok3 - thx, I`ll keep that way :)

SquishMe - thank you, I`m not sure about the light yet. I`m thinking how can be the light from a plasma tube... certainly softer... I`ll make some tests soon.

agou - thx, glad you like the abstract side of the image... I`m thinking from the start to make it abstract without a really defined clear aspect and function of the buildings. I`ll add just more details to keep the viewers eye busy :D

OKMER - thank you for the kind words, well... appartments are expensive at the 54554 floor :D

Jakyll - thx, yes I agree with you, I want to make this image without a particular location in the stone or out... it will be just in the future because of spaceships.

jddog - thank you, good luck to you too :)

Just the background buildings... I refined them and added a structure. I`m not still sure about this image... seems too far from the story... maybe I`ll use those buildings on some more EON related image... in a cylinder somewhere... or I just have to recompose the view and integrate a background with a panorama inside a chamber...

I think I have a nice idea to devlopp here. It will be a scene near the whole Axis City inside the Way. With all his connections, roads etc.
Something maybe more artistic and (may the author excuse me) not following exaclty what is described in the book.
But maybe the challenge is to show his own vision of all this fantastic world too?

Anyway, first I will show how I`m building the Axis City. Starting with a flat cube...

Nomad
10-26-2006, 01:42 PM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/14/11724/11724_1161866536_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/14/11724/11724_1161866536_large.jpg)

... and this is how to make the spiral pyramids described in the book. Just by using a cloned flat cube.

After creating a rought model of the whole city I will make a visualisation of my idea.

.. and here is the whole low poly 3d model. Now the question if it`s correct... ? Also the next steps are to model the Way and his roads to establish a first view of the whole thing.

Comments are warmly welcome.
