Nice.

Haven't read the book, or the inspiration or chapters yet, but I love the concept. So I really hope that my spare time won't fizzle away like it has done during the previous challenges I've tried to participate in.

Well, good luck to everyone! I hope there'll be as many exiting entries as I've seen here before:thumbsup:

OK, so I've been looking at some of the inspirational exerpts, and so far I find the second chamber, Alexandria the most inviting. That's propably because it seems to have structures that remind me of Rendesvous with Rama. (Especially the circular sea)

One thing I've been wondering about that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere is, how are these massive enclosed spaces lit? Is there anybody that's read the book that can tell me?

Try: Takk for det:) Jeg digga Journey Begins bidraget ditt, så det hadde vært morsomt å sett noe du evt i denne utfordringen også.

Best of luck, I'll be following your thread. Hope they have the book in Bergen so you don't have to wait on it.

Thanks, cucumber:)

My idea for an animated shot from Alexandria is for a fairly standard establishing shot, except here it's made fairly spectacular by the environment. It starts with a long shot on one of the "chandelier" cities hanging upside-down on the far side of the world, then we tilt down along the sea/river stretching around the world and finally pull focus onto a character standing or sitting just in front of the camera.

I was wondering the same thing, if someone tells you can you drop my my thread and let me know? ;)

Good luck, I'm in the same boat as you, I've never read the book but I intend to give this my best efforts regardless.

I'm only hopping about the Ebook version trying to get an idea of a chamber to model, and I think the lighting is a plasma tube that goes from cap to cap and light up everything. In fact found a qoute
"Rings of light passed through ionized gas only slightly denser than the near-vacuum around them, sweeping along the axis from the bore hole to the opposite side of the chamber with such speed that the eye interpreted their passage as a continuous hollow shaft or tube. The plasma tube—and extensions in the other chambers— provided all the light for the Stone’s interior and had been doing so for some twelve centuries."
Hope that helps.
Good Luck with your entry

Thanks, Stephen! You're exactly right. I got the book on Saturday, and am approaching half way through now.

I've got some concepts and models now, but as I don't have an internet connection at home I must remember to bring the images to work. (And of course I haven't)

OK, this is an early pre-viz on the chandelier buildings. I want them to have this basic shape. There's still to few "prisms" at the wide part of the building, and I'll make a central core to the whole structure. Each "prism" in the chandelier will be a fairly normal-looking 20th century building, and they will be connected with narrow walkways/roads.

The second chamber, Alexandria. It's still pretty much just a caped cylinder, but it gives me somewhere to move the camera around and place models as I create them.

The interior of the second chamber again. A bit more to scale, and with "better" lighting.

mark123: Thanks, mate!
varma: Thanks!

I'm a bit unsure about exactly how to stage the final scene and camera move because I get so many new and interesting ideas as I keep reading the book. I still think it'll be a sort of establishing shot of Alexandria as they (Patricia and Lanier) enter the 2nd chamber.
