DaddyMack. Hey there Robert, thanks a lot for stopping by. It sounds like this is going to be a fun challenge. I need to get busy and start looking over some of the chapters for ref. :p Talk to you later man.
Gunilla: RIGHT! The premise of the challenge is great, I hope that they do them like this in the future as well. Though I will probably only have time to dedicate to the illustration portion.
makaron: Hi there Mona, thank you very much! I am glad to see you and your GPs in the challenge too. This will be a blast, have fun!
Jedi-Juice: Hey man, thanks a lot! No I doubt that I will have enough time this challenge to dedicate to two entries. It would be fun though.
MichaelZHsee: Hey there, thanks a lot, same to you! And have fun!
MVDB: Hey Michael, thanks a lot, I hope not to disappoint.
soapy: Hey Jim, same here! I actually expected them to start the challenge a couple of weeks ago while my wife and I were on vacation but I was lucky. :p
AIRz: Hey Damir, thanks a lot for stopping by!
Thanks again everybody! :wavey: :D

Greetings,
Well I thought that it was time that I start with some concept ideas. Here is something that I had in mind after reading "The Death". When I was doing some research I saw that Greg Bear wrote for the Known Space universe from Larry Niven, which I am more familiar with. So it is cool that I get a chance to take a look at a larger body of Greg Bear's work now.

Greetings,
Well I had a few minutes to sit down this evening and test some ideas (mainly the lit cities on the dark side of earth) I had for the earth which will play a large part in the background. I plan to add nuclear explosions on top of everything else, or below however it works out in the layers. :P But I don't have any more time this evening. It is about 95% PS and 5% rendered.

Great job on the planet, Matt! I'd love to see/read more about how you made that particular iamge (even though you're not done with it yet) and I'm sure others would too. Nice work so far...

Greetings,
I modeled the base mesh for the stone the other day. Once it was in the shape that I wanted I took it into ZBrush and detailed the outer shell. Which then I rendered out later as a normal map and used with a medium ranger poly version of the shell (16K+).

The stone was rendered out as a basic GI lit scene and then as a simple color pass. I did two versions of the GI one with a dark interior and one with an over exposed interior that I then went and blended them together where I wanted. The above image is still in WIP stage and I have begun to rethink adding the nuclear explosions on top of the planet. I feel that it might be getting a little too busy then. Though I do have a version with some initial explosions. Either that or scale back the amount of explosions. I'll have to see when the foreground elements are further along. ;)
Matt :)
Don’t know how this relates to the story….. (Only just started reading the book).
But a truly wonderful image Matt!!

walrus: Hey Mike, thanks a lot for your kind reply! I am in the process of working it up into a little mini tutorial, I just need to add some images and put it into some sort of form. I will try to work on it this afternoon if I have a few free moments.
nwiz25: Hi there Neville, thanks a lot for checking out my entry! Much appreciated!
MVDB: Hey Michael thank you very much, glad to hear that!
Gunilla: Hey Gunilla, thanks a lot for your always generous comments! I am having a blast with the whole space topic is really fun to portray. And the way things work bring me to think of other sci-fi stories. Like the way the asteroid works. (The Babylon 5 biosphere sort of reminds me of it.) Fun stuff!
Try: Hey there Per, thank you very much for your generous comments! Oops, I didn't see your post while I was replying.
Thanks again! :wavey: :D

Cool!!maybe I think the Stone is too spherical. The book tells that is the asteroid Juno. Here I put a concept drawing image that I found about the asteroid, hope it helps you:thumbsup:

Cool picture Matt, but I agree with Gonzalo too, it should look more like a random shaped asteroid. Probably an easy fix on your lores poly model in ZBrush. Composition is great and nice light! :)

GonzaloGolpe, ReinaldoRomero & thierry2005: Hey thanks a lot guys, I really appreciate the C&C! Yeah, I read that about the rock's shape too and I totally agree with you that the rock should be more oblong and irregular. I am more partial to round myself but I will see about going back and fixing that later. Thanks again, your advice didn't fall on deaf ears!
yanbing: Hey there Tian, thanks a lot, much appreciated!
spikey: Hey Ilari, yeah I am a big sci-fi fan so the challenge is right up my ally. Thanks a lot for stopping by and checking it out!
