The focal point of this design is the scene of Patricia opening the gate, with some of the more interesting chambers (6, 3 & 2) surrounding it in their proper order. Outside that is the stone orbiting Earth above, and Axis City and a fallen Earth city below.

Welcome to the challenge Jason. Looks like a great start.

Thanks. My biggest concern is whether it's too busy. Also, it will be tricky to get each portion looking its best in time. I didn't want to start drawing until I had read the book. So, that slowed me down some already.

My biggest concern is whether it's too busy.

It's hard to squeeze all of the coolness of the book into a single image. The thing I keep pondering about your image is how you put sky above and ground below in all of the inner stone rings. A more acurate way of doing it would be to wrap the ground all the way around - but then it would be even more busy... hmmm. If you want to keep it more graphic, maybe an easy interesting change would be to rotate all of the rings independently of each other so that the sky would face down on one or to the side on another. Just a thought. Keep at it.

I've been rethinking my first concept. Besides it being crowded, it also feels lifeless. There are far too many landscapes and not enough action. What I'll do is remove some of the scenes. I'll try three, each from a different scale. I'll keep the Earth on top as is, remove Axis City and make the bottom only the wrecked Earth city and fill the center with a single character based scene. If it looks good, I'll move on to the line art.

I liked your first idea and even so if it needed some more work , maybe some symbolic cercles with maybe some kind of alienlooking sign's in it could have helped separating the worlds.Anyway, curious where you'll come up with!
Good luck mate!!!

Here is the current build of my models. As you can see, I did away with the ring design all together.

Here are the texture, color, and lighting details I've got planned at this time:

1. The global scene will showcase North America at night, with the sun just off the Earth's edge. The texture of the Earth will be dark shades of blue with city lights visible, in probably a faint yellow. The asteroid will be bumpier and will likely be a gray/black/brownish color.

2. The title's material will be a white metal. I'm building it as if the title is a machine. The things attached to the letters are light fixtures. The lights will cast a bluish color. I may add more parts to it.

3. The center scene is of Patricia opening a gate in the Way. Not shown in the shaded image is the bright plasma ball far behind the characters racing toward them. The floor will be a black with orange highlights. The clavicle Patricia is holding will produce a bluish light. There are several effects I'll add to show how the clavicle is opening the gate.

4. The city scene will probably be set in the evening with a setting sun. In the air will be falling nuclear ICBMs. One has already exploded. I'll add grayish debris being blown away from the buildings.

Here is what the bombed city portion of my illustration currently looks like. The background is a matte I painted in Painter; the rest is all 3D.

My illustration contains three pivotal scenes from the book. At the top is the asteroid Thistledown orbiting Earth. For the Russian Colonel Mirsky its appearance in the night sky becomes a source of hope.
At the bottom is a city being bombed with nuclear missiles. Because of distrust in how the exploration of the asteroid is handled, Russia begins a nuclear war with the United States known as the Death.
The center depicts a gate opening by the main character. In an attempt to exit the asteroid and return to another dimension in which the Death never happened, Patricia uses technology she finds there to open a portal to another Earth.
For the title, I designed it as if it were a device with light fixtures.
