This is a quick sketch I did in Art Rage. After reading the excerpts, I realy got excited, and was also inspired by the 'Worlds within Worlds' subtitle on the Challenge page.
I can feel the cool distant colors of earth contrasting with the interior of the Stone as it reflects predominantly off of the visor. I still haven't figure out what exactly will be reflected, but I imagine some environment from one of the chambers.

This is an idea of the suit and modular glove component. I went with a bubble visor, to make it instantly recognizable as an astronaut, regardless of the viewer's experience with science fiction.
I figure the suit wouldn't be too bullky, allowing for more felxible movement between crevices on the Stone. The gloves are modular, having also tool attachments and such. The glove is obviously not to scale with the hand.

well, i never read the book before. so i dont know if theres scene with a space suit like you did.but if i were you, i think im gonna make a spacesuit design other than NASA's look.u know, maybe close to LOST IN SPACE the movie, whre the space suit were designed more slim, wearable, light, it wrap the helmet cleaner and automaticaly.
anyway, if it meant to be as close as the storyline, i couldnt complain...
keep it up

Sweet, I love the astronaut's helmet and how it flows into the suit. Go with it.

I actually like the design of the suit. From what I've read so far...the story is set in present day. Therefore, I don't see why the suit would need to be any more advanced than what astronauts have today. I'm also digging the composition. Good luck!

After reading the excerpts
Where did you read the excerpts? Are there many? I bought the book on Amazon but it's coming to Dublin Ireland, from New York  could take a while.
I like the reflection in the astronauts suit concept, someone mentioned this not being in the book but does it matter? That's not rhetorical, I actually don't know, I think the book is just meant ot be inspiration not a solid set of rules so I think your concept is excellent. Keep up the good work I look forward to seeing the 3d work.

Squash-in-Stretch: The excerpts are here (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/eon/about_eon.php) on the CG Challenge page. Scroll down a bit and you'll see them.
Crin: I haven't read the book either, but even if it's not specifically in the book, it makes great art.
Thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions. Its great to get so much feedback from an geographically diverse group.

This is my sketch of the suit design. It will probably be my last concept design. The legs on the side view look better than the front view, so I'll try to incorporate that slender, solder-like feel from the side view into the front as well.
One inspiration, although not really related as to their roles, are the mobile infantry from Starship troopers (the book). Mobility, apart from functionaliry are stressed in the design of these suits.
I am excited to start modelling!
Go Chris! I really like the concept of the interior reflecting on the helmet visor!
I also think that, although the story takes place in present day, that it would be an alternate reality, much more politically convoluted and with more advanced technology, so the suit designed can be more futuristic than contemporary NASA designs.
Good luck with the challenge!

I've started the modelling, and as this is probably the most complex cg I've ever worked on, I'm definately stretching creative/technical muscles.
So this is a rough layout. I am learning Silo as well. Nimble piece of software. I like it.
