Hey everyone, here`s my preliminary sketch for the competition. This shot is inspired by The Death sequence in the book.I took some time out to go & read the book. The final image however will be more panoramic.

Here`s the preliminary composition of the main architecture. The buildings were modeled after some references. The piece is low res for now, however there are many more elements to go into it.This part only serves as the main template for the rest of the painting & there`s loads of more architecture to go in as well as textures, lighting & the focal point, the explosion.i hope everyone else is having a great time.

the city looks perfect... what method are you using to place the buildings? I was looking at a dvd for houdini that illustrated how to create a city procedurally and was wondering if you followed a similar pattern, placed them yourself or randomly seeded them on the plane....

Hey people,THANKS loads for the awesome support you guys have thrown in.But I need to let you guys in on something important here.First of all, this is only going to be the front of the main architecture which means it`s only a portion of the bigger picture.(Anyone who loves this composition, please bear with me.)And the other important thing is I`m opting to do the texturing in PS 7 as I don`t want the final image to end up looking too 3D & since I matte paint a lot I feel more comfy dooing it by hand, also it`s far more efficient. In the mean time check out my portfolio at; WWW.prabath.cgsociety.org

i didn't know bryce could do architecture that well. You absolutely must do a
tutorial .Some comments, you subcompositions all have a dominant element
eg the explosion ,how do you plan to mesh them together and keep the picture balanced?
prabath
10-22-2006, 05:25 AM
Hey guys,THANKS! for the comments,Hmm!A tutorial,I`ll see what I can do.As for the rest of the image(i.e. except the architecture),it`s going to be a huge matte painting, which means the cluods, the explosion & the atmospheric elements will be done in PS 7 like with the textures of the buildings & colours.
Cheers & Good luck to all!

I really like the feel of the colours, weight from the solid structures and depth in this illustration with the focal point being the engraved head. My only question is i don't get the feeling of evacuation but instead stillness. Maybe there is a reason for this. Keep up the good work!

this is a very interesting concept you are developing here.. I have one question which I didn't see nayon mentioning in the previous posts. What is it with the face? Not that it's bad I am just curious... cool models and texturing.
O_o
Really good WIP, looking forward to seeing more of the city you had in the Bryce model. Good job on the model btw, right now your work is more 3D than 2D but we shall see by the end.
Did you paint the ships or model?
Very nice comp!Good luck to you!
prabath
10-27-2006, 11:21 AM
Hi guys, looks like I owe you guys a lot of explanation.Well let`s cover one point at a time;First of all the mirrored touch is due to the fact that the buildings are metal. As for the early composition of the piece, everything apart from the main cube were planned as filler material so that part of the architecture got replaced by the corresponding cubes & here I shall apologise if I have disappointed fans of that comp.Although parts of that formation will ultimately be added for emphasis on the theme of "civilization".On the other hand I`m more & more tempted to matte paint the whole filler architecture. So keep your fingers crossed, but I hope you guys will come to like it.I also admit,it looks more 3D & yes, the ships are 3D.They are really old models I did in Max 5.And finally, about the face:It was done purely for sentimental reasons.I`m really thrilled at how you guys have responded to this piece & I thank you guys that much for that.Keep all crits, questions & suggestions coming,I really appreciate it.
Cheers & Good luck to everyone participating.

Hey Prabath,
Nice work so far. I am just wondering about some of your compositional choices. I really liked your early model:
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/14/11671/11671_1160926681_large.jpg
This seemed more epic than the current framing of the shot. I would also watch that everything isn't dead center. It seems a little static with everything pointing to the center of the frame. You might consider widening your composition for more of a 1 : 2.35 ratio to build that epic feeling. That would also give you room to offset the composition so your main building isn't dead center. I would start by aligning your hero building to the lower right or left 3rd of the frame. Keep up the great work man!
Cheers,
Tim

Beautiful colors and details in this piece. Nice work so far! I don't think your recent compositional change works very well just yet. You've shifted the building over, but haven't changed the perspective of the piece to really accomodate the added sections. The perspective is still the old persepctive just moved to the right. If you're really serious about wanting to move the "hero building," as tim called it, over to the right, you might want to consider rerenderring the whole thing with the camera moved over too so that the perspective is correct. It's a lot of work, admittedly, but just shifting it all over right isn't working yet: You spent too much time making the center of the former composition the focus to eliminate that focus that easily. Good luck with it!

Prabath - It's looking good. I appreciate how you're trying to make the image less symmetrical, but the proper way to do that would be to rerender the model with proper perspective. It shouldn't bee too hard: You have the model, and you certainly have the time! But just cutting and pasting and flipping parts of your image is just giving you areas that are not correctly in perspective with the rest of the piece. I used a perspective grid overlaid on your image to show you what I mean:
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l260/mdashow/prabath-paintover.jpg
So if you really want to change your initial idea and make it assymetrical, you might be better off starting from a whgole new render as the underlying basis for your piece. Personally, I didn't think the symmetrical version was so bad.
But I do like the work on the clouds and explosions!
Anyhow, hope this was what you wnated. Good luck!

Hey Mike, thanks for all the help.I have some major issues making the said adjustments.First of all it would be best that you know that I don`t own my own PC.I`ve been working from a net cafe all this time.So it`s been a long time since I`ve had to delete the original models I`ve made for the sake of "disk space".Now I only have the raw photos to work from.I hope you see my predicament. However I still have the original several renders with me,so I will try to make the best out of them but I can`t be too sure,`cause at the end of the day it`s not my own PC I`m working from.As for the time factor it presents a far more sad story `cause I`ve got exams coming in campus. So you see I have my plate full, but I will try my best to make things right. If I fall short I just hopr I won`t loose a great fan.
Cheers!
walrus
11-17-2006, 02:51 PM
Wow, I didn't realize that was the case! Given that, I am going to respectfully disagree with the NextOne: I still think the symmetrical one works really well. If you still had the 3D files, you could work with this new layout. But as all of your renders of the 3D models were done with the symmetrical layout, then that's what you've got: I think you should just go back to post 36 and work from there.
I think perhaps the biggest lesson here is next time around to figure out what your layout and composition is before you render your models out, and definitely before you throw away all the files. Forget about using a computer, you could work out your whole composition on paper before you ever get to a computer and have people give you valuable feedback about what works before you spend too much time rendering out a layout that doesn't work for you. But that's just my opinion, good luck to you no matter what.

Thanks for sharing that Mike.I really appreciate your understanding. However I think I should stick to the current composition & try to work the perspective from there, because once I changed it I had kept too faithfully to the symmetrical architecture. This one feels more random & less deliberate.Perhaps I`ll post you what I will get once I`m done with the perspective & you can help me check if it works.
Thanks!

The story behind Eon touches the theme of man`s inhumanity to man in many levels.Perhaps the epitome of the resulting destruction is the Death as portrayed in the storyline. As the subject matter presented many creative opportunities to present a rendition of the world created by Greg`s imagination I personally opted to work on this theme of destruction & catastrophe. So the Death was an easy subject choice. My initial approach was to present the destruction of a futuristic cityscape through cataclismic bombardment.
The story describes the Death as a "crown-fire".This required for a panoramic shot.I wanted the piece to look like a scene from a science fiction movie.I did some reference work to come up with a unique architecture fo my city. The inspiration for this element came from the cubic architecture of coruscant from Star Wars.
Then I moved on to the explosion.I did a lot of references to get the exact look I needed. It had to be convincing & epic at the same time.It initially took a long time to get this right. In the end all the trial & error payed off & one can see the result of that in this final image.

Only thing I would say is that there is no real depth in this image. A ship in the forground should help make this one that much more successful. Good luck with the final image though!

It has come along very well. I would agree with my buddy nwiz25 with the chaos. The book describes it as total chaos. I also find the left building too symetrical... mirrored? But that is up to you... I think technichaly it's great. Good job and good luck!
Hey Prabath, just saw your message, you've got a good entry. Dynamic action, nice colors and a neat sci-fi design. The most impressive thing about the work is that you're not even entitled to your own computer...? I'm not sure how you do it in this respect.
Crits for the image: there is some loss of depth. The image obviously has depth because of the perspective you've set up already, but something isn't right. Adding the roads was a very nice touch. You should consider adding something in there which casts a visible shadow in the actual image too. Shadows cast by visible objects add a lot of depth. Also adding some human figures in the image somehow might enhance the scale of things but this is difficult to do at this stage because of the heavy textures you've got all over the place. One idea is to add some type of a flat shaded landing strip on the main building with something easily recognizable to the average human for scale.
Also consider other options for depth such as adding some bluring (dof effects) and reducing color intensity in the far away areas - which will be doubly difficult considering your brightest and most intense colors are far away due to the explosion right now... still, something might be possible with some tweaking.
The explosion is good but I have trouble understanding if it's exploding now or if it is sustained heavy fire because of the billowing clouds above. An explosion of fire has little to no smoke until the fire fades, at this point the smoke smothers the flames and the flames get weaker because of the lack of oxygen in the area... Think of the nuclear mushroom, there is a bright ball of light - then a transition to smoke which rises out like a mushroom where the light had been earlier. The fires on the ground are residual and dying in intensity as air and materials to burn become consumed. Subsequent snapshots of the explosion are overwhelmed by smoke. The only way to keep a sustained bright burning fire which produces massive smoke is by providing it with more fuel - like the oil well fires in the movie Jarhead.
Also - the floating things in the air - without reading the story I can't tell if those are airships or broken fragments of a tower which just exploded and were thrown outwards by the explosion. No ideas how to correct this w/o blowing up the resolution on the image and making the details clearer. Someone suggested you add a airship closer to the viewer for details/perspective which might help a lot if done correctly.
Don't be in a rush to submit, I haven't participated so I'm not sure when the deadline is but I thought the challenge ends in Jan sometime? You can try to throw together a few more sketches, not even related to this scene to beef up your entry.
I also think you should consider your workflow in the future. Make sure you do a few sketches early on with angles/objects and ask for opinions on which one others like best for composition before comitting to building the 3D stuff. In your case because of lack of computer it was impossible to go back later and render in a different angle so the first stage of this project was especially critical in this sense. That's just a lesson learned I guess, sometimes we have to screw up to see our mistakes, i think you understand this part well.
Mad props for working w/o a computer. Lots of talent and motivation demonstrated in this thread. Good luck bro!
1st thing that strikes me is that there is no depth to the image everything appears on one level of existance within your world. it just lacks atmosphere. try to make the buildings in the back less saturated and with more haze infront of them. maybe also seperate the dark dirty smoke of the explotion from the sky which is a nice blue and pink.
the other thing is the scale. i cant find anything that would help me identify the massiveness of the ships/structures... i mean its obvious its big but there is nothing to place a comparison against. would be nice if you worked that in there somehow.
i hope that helps you buddy. :)

very nice work. only thought i have is trough lack of real foreground, all seems happening in the midground and the composition lacks a bit of depht. maybe ading a bit of haze could solve the midground backgroundseparation, and adding a few nearer spaceships the lack of foreground.
hope that helps :)

Hey all thanks for all your input & HAPPY HOLIDAYS to everyone as well.Unfotunately I was unable to get back to the image `cause I`ve been recovering from viral flu that`s been spreading all over here for the last few months. It`s like suspended animation,I hardly get a chance to leave my bed room.It seams I`ll have to stay this way well in to the new year.Anyways GOOD LUCK to all who`s been along with me for the ride.
Cheers!

It looks extremely destructive and it also generate a fine piece of cloud effects overall structure. Well focused, well ballanced, well colorized. It's G.O.O.D! Keep your hands, eyes and mind steady and ready! Good luck!
