k, here's what i usually do not do on any other comission work, linearts usually are just rough blox in my case. i made a quick pencil session on a a light print and put it all together, the piece stats here.
some may ask, what were those sketches for? lol, i will mat a trailer, all sketches i made will be used as as refs now for the 3d project, and ... yeah but my mainfocus is to finish this. trailer if extratime. the poster fun starts :) hope you like the layout, paintingbase ready to go :)

awww... finally a space kitten :bounce:

and really like the comp.. not to busy but still a lot of stuff in it... I bet you gonna make this fun to see progress... like the blueish colors too. kind of spacy tones...

I´m keeping a close eye on you, so you don´t loose your kitten... :p

BTW .. dont give a kitten a creditcard this time around.. you know what happend last time...

cheers..

Nice to see you have something up Sacha! I like the layout although it is a little similar to what you do. But I like it let see where you take this image. Good luck with it!

calisto: dont worry, the beam wont shoot poor olmy :P glad you like the base, i scribbled rough lies on it and gave it a go

zweiDee: thanks mate :)

Mona: lol, yeah the jedi kitten are an expensive crew :p rofl, cant believe you still remember that, seems havin become a running gag :scream: as for the line art, its very loos by purpose and only is placement, the worst spot mirsky is at work, step one posted in a few secs :)

beelow: yep agree, done many posterattemps before. basically, i done lots of comissions lately for books, so i had a few things in my learning process that pused this forward, and as for the challenge itself, this will be the poster to the trailer i planed. so all the concepts serve a reason. its ok so far, since i done tons of singleframe pieces as well lately and i got rid of being stuck on posters quiet much :p glad you still like it

and now :) time for the first update, colorpass 1 on a russian hero :)

Very nice Potraits. Can you show more of the girl ,you are very well known in that
area .Also where is the scene located ,in which chamber? Can wait to see your textures
and details. And please comment on the art people.I luv sacha as much as you people but reading through 18 pages of webpages in the early months is pretty rough going.:)

TheFirstAngel

nwiz25: thank you so much my friend

warpy: yeah if technical problems are solved on vidgrabing i'll do that, told you yesterday, with 1600x1200 the videofiles very fast get very big, we're going to have a look at this later today, so why not :) still, i think there's many ppl having a way more classic way to work than me you could learn a much more solid technique from... ^^

Gunilla: this only is an initial colorpass, see it as a diffuse map, speaking for those who do 3d like you. i usually start from a basecolor and let colors interact with each oter on the fly with specular highlight, environmental ambient light reflection, the whole gi stuff, lightamount and resulting sss. thou, its funny to think like that while painting, i know :p

OmeN2501: thanks a lot. while i was unsure if he looks russian enough, glad you say he does. i am working from a very loose base here to have the freedom to develop the characters on the fly. i hope they all will have the expression and features at the end i want them to, i layed 70% of the images weight on charactersesign while the rest comes together from scene's of the book :)

atilla: thanks a lot my friend. i can ensure you my wrks are far from being perfect. since i remember, i have ever ever finished a piece i was happy with, cuz there's always stuff i couldnt get right, but looking at old works gives me chills at least wich means, the practicing at least was worth it. perfect is something that never will happen anyways but i work on my skills daily to improve the approach :) thanks for the compliment!

brrrhmmm:Very nice Potraits. Can you show more of the girl ,you are very well known in that

hey mate :) ok, i am not completely sure if i understood you right in all points. but i try to answer as good as i can.

1 thanks a lot, glad you like the prepares.
2 here's a first preview of the girl, and the next version is on the way, ^^ didn't even know my well work is known, there's many heavyweighters, i dont see me as one at all.
2 as for the layout, i picked the center as the circle of the thistledownlibrary navigationsystem, main canvas is a view into the citycomplex.
Upper left corner is the russian armada aproaching the stone in the upper right corner
lower left corner is the placement for the sixth chamber and lower right corner the placement for axis city that is moving down the beam, to get some of the important scenes integrated in the piece.
as for the comments, i always try to comment and answer as good as i can and am very thankfull for the continious crits and comments, also i always try to help if i can, thats what makes this community simply great :) hehe yeah 18 pages are unbelievable, simply didnt expect such a feedback besides all prepares were done for the whole project to get it running. as for now, i work on the poster, and enjoy the freedom i have in it in developping.
next version of patricia up in a few mins, painting her now

thanks a lot everyone for the grat comments and crits, best of luck to you all and keeep on rocking!

Zapan
10-21-2006, 11:52 PM
Yes I like to vote .... feel like to be useful in some ways !

I would say the .... mmh .... the semiprofile ... but don't ask me why ...

Amazing sketches .... it's really like some eye candies !

Keep up the aceness Sacha

10-21-2006, 11:54 PM
Really nice sketches, I'm going with the semi-profile as well. My only comment about it is that I feel that she is looking too much up, and I think it'd be nicer if you had her more like, staring into the distance. Right now her expression looks like she might be confused in that one. I like the angle more though :)

version c with eyes only turned

ramy badie
10-22-2006, 12:04 AM
I just commented, but I wanted to say that I really like this version c. Definitely puts together what I was looking for, my only issue now is that the other characters are also looking at the viewer. I feel that patricia should be the only one, and the others should be looking straight ahead in the directions they are looking. I think that would open up the piece more too, extend it beyond the canvas.

k here's what i done. he eyes area has te sharpest contours along with nosetip and lipboardes they get sharp highlights paintes in screen mode. eyes rebounce light and have gem properties in the refraction area, litten the iris on the oposite side of the specular highlight with colordoge.
as for skin, adding s light bit of a more sturated area to the cheeks and around the nosetip ads a nice rosy touch. shadowpass and final highlights follow later, basic sculpting done 80% :)
hope those points help the one or the other :)

ramy badie
10-22-2006, 08:16 PM
Hm to be honest, I like the version before this one more. Even though the facial features were slightly misaligned, it just looked better overall. It seems too shiny in some odd places, making the face look like it is swollen in a few areas. It's still looking good, but I just feel that the shading before made the face look better.

i agree with rami the specular highlights were too strong in certain areas. toned down a few parts, also corrected midtones to a softer range.
added the first warmcolorpass, and the fun goes on. next pass :)

Ori@r.a.m (http://forums.cgsociety.org/Ori@r.a.m) THanks mate

Terro: Thanks a lot :) well still a way to go but slowly getting there. my main target was to have her rendered good enough to have a guideline of the style.best of luck to you too :)

hot stuff man! Much improved now, you got exactly what I was referring to. Patricia as played by adriana lima? Regardless, it's looking awesome. I can't wait to see you work on this more. I am almost afraid that the other characters won't be able to compete with her, but maybe that's just what you want. You'll work it out and make it great regardless, but you better finish! :D

Ramy: thanks a lot my friend, yay Adriana Lima as Patricia, the one topnotch mathematician of our era? Would be as great as Dr Chrismas Jones, i loved when Denise Richards explained "i am a russin Nuclearphysician", i instantly bought that and had to watch the film for its deeply philosophical storyline and acuracy :p. erm. still, she would look hot. no doubt :) i'll give my best to finish

Morning Sabrina! thanks a lot, glad you like the portrait. yeah i get asked often so i posted a few steps, and made a sketchsession today for warpy as well, thought i post it here too hope you enjoy ^^

basecolors on the characters, olmi redone, because i got it completely wrong and almost made it to create an olmifrant :p

bouboul: hahah lol thanks mate :) since i think one of the greatest parts of the challenge is the learning effect, i thought it would be a good idea to post the little session here too ^^ glad you liked it. well, you can download the goro (http://www.area-56.de/tutorials/goros_brushes.abr)-brushes tascha (http://tascha.ch/tutorials/steps/Taschas_brushes.rar)-brushes and m@ brushes wich all rock, i use some of them as well. As for mine, i will make a downloadable set if i find some time to sort em out.

Neubius: lol not much theese days, thats the challenge effect :p but yeah not every evening is same productive, glad there's still 80 days to go ^^

DrIvErD: most welcome my friend :) keep on rocking too ^^

kmest: i will in time, this time i am smarter and refine the all over level of detail so i can concentrate on focal points when the whole piece more or less works instead of being stuck on a big fat messs again and paint 120 px high figurines and decors 30 px high noone ever will see and loose so much time i have to drop it ^^ lol. glad you like the work on the girl. ^^

rawwad: hahaha so you didnt like the fairy guy pretty ^^ dw, me neither was fun anyways :p glad you like her, already moving on ^^

Flaeticia: thank you so much falbala! ^^ congrats on the hottie thread by the way, keep it burning hot and rock on! :buttrock:

MartinNielsen: hahaha nah man, i wish. well i practice speed. that for a good reason. i feel like a snail when i seen the speed of ppl like the AD of Warhammer Cardgame departement doing 27 paintings in 1 week. and i intend to change that, being faster has a big plus. i have more time left to work on details wich actually lifts the all over level again... sooooo speedtraining makes sense and i do that the whole year already and still am that snail  but i work on it :)

thanks a ll for the great feedback. posted a betweenpost for showing what i'm working on. hope you like it and have fun yourself too! keep it up, lets rock:beer::wip::buttrock:

OMG, some serious painting skills you got there:) Great concepts throughout, can' t wait to see where you gonna go with the final image.

I myself didn't vision Patricia quite as jessicalbaish/adrianalimaish but that's a personal opinion. Beautiful definitely but maybe in some less mainstream way...

Anyways, keep it up. This thread seems to be a great source of inspiration for us mere mortals:) Maybe even I can soon get this challenge started.

Hey Sacha, I'm once again glued to your thread even though I'm not participating. Thanks a bunch for making that video, I watched it yesterday but felt like saying something now, learning so much from stuff like this. Really thanks a lot!

You did a couple of tricks which I don't know about:one that comes to mind right now was towards the middle you selected an area below the ogre and applied some type of a fog, I'm guessing the background color gray, it seeped outside of the selection area. What was that? It was quick and worked very well, I need to try it.

The way you work is completely different from how I work, maybe that's why I sux and you do so great haha.

I like it dude!! And she is hot!! Damn...maybe you should create another girl or is there another girl? I guess the main character is your girlfriend after all...you create her beauty well, as if you know her. Well i'm only curious!! :applause: Keep it up!

LM: yup i know, just playing with his noseanantomy. tricky to make a nose with ho nosetrills so i made small long slits under w square nose.

Mehmi: glad you like the russian hero :)

daWinky: thanls Sabrina, yep right, thats why i repainted him. got confused with frants and olmi and mixed em up ^^ :p

Garde: thanks a lot mate. well yeah she's none either just a young fragile latinamerican type of girl with cateyes, and yeh, sort of an eyecatcher so i thought i center the attention on her. great to hear my work inspires you, would be great if you join the fun too, if so, best of luck mate and have fun ^^

niva: you are welcome. yeah soft ede selecion with backgroundcolor and delete the lines under him causes sort of a groundfog effect fast. lol, nah, since i am a selfeducated painter, i never had a particular order how to paint, i just paint on the fly, got something in my mind and then try to approach it a sfast as possible. i work very freely wich is fun for me to do so. but if you want to paint with a more classical way, you should do that, thats a solid base and will lead you to your target, and once you have that base, you can develop your own ways of working. mine is much improvisation and usually chaotic but fun ^^ great to hear he vid helped you so far.

TomG: merci tom, hihihihi schwiezer hie azträffe isch ja scho öps mit sälteheitswert ^^ freutmi dass der gfallt wasi mölele :)

madshooter: working on the composition, actually, colorwieghts n stuff. later today an update on it i hope ^^

greatto: thanks. sure you can. i will prolly make a few wallpapers of the work here at the end of the challenge anyways and 1 sure will be patricia

Mike Moir: great to see ya here too old friend. yep posterfeeel is by purpose, since i already started on the trailerprepares, its supposed to be the poster to the d work i started

Martin: hhehehe yeah, its pointless for me to paint 100% realistic, i still keep my characters stylized for that reason, to keep a recognizable touch of my work in all of them, glad ya like that ^^

Slav: XD hahahaha errr where? wut? errrr :p

Didea: hahaha no mate wrong again, she's not deise richards, that was just a compare to "dr christmas jones" what would come out to send Adriana lima into deepspace, thou, that of course would look great but i doubt i'd buy it, her being our time's greatest mathematician and astrophysican... but yes, at least not that wrong. i like denise richards, she adds that "babe-aspect" to an optic as adriana would too - cuteness. me painting a cute young girl will usually head into such a direction. besides, my gf has a smove round face a buttonnose and big beautiful eyes as well, i like that and i think most males do (?)
now for the girlhunt in detail and a few general thoughts:
http://www.angel3d.ch/content/3d/wip/masterandservant2d/sketch02_interrupted.jpg
lets see. i done toonstuff all my life long where i built up my type of dynamics. watch my clip so you can see what i mean. i made 3d wich helped me understand light, materials, shaders wich helps to render materials and you are forced to study and understand all you wanna do 360° up and down round and round before you start to trow the first spline.
thought the buttonnose and stuff is mostly a relict from my toonstyle, most painters i know have an own specific way to paint young girls recognizable they done it, such as Aly Fell, Dunkelgold, Jason Chan, Oz Haver, Nebezial, Svetlin Velvinov and many many more, they simply draw on their matrix wich doesn't mean they actually had a reallife model. just an own personal way, recognizable under 100ds.
See, thats the style one gets in years, and yeah, you always will find the one or the other celeb that prolly looks a bit like the one or the other girl one painted but there's usually no relation to them.
I usually paint free. refs only if i get stuck and have to fix things that are totally off, that's tweaking. why? i seen many many artists doing lazy stuff like photomanipulation or at least strong relative to refs such as copy photos. thats ok so far for practicing but keeps you bound on something given - not saying inspiration isn't ok, but theres a huge difference between copy something or being inspired by something - i'd rather paint a nose or whatever thats off and fix it while painting than being bound. The maintarget of an artist should be to create with his tools, a recreation of his own mind, fantasy, his ideas, his visions. Therefor, being stuck on photorefs blocks your own creativety. Also, if you are in a productionpipeline, working under pressure, it can't - mustn't be - your work ends up being way under the expectations your work promisses.
See, thats basically why there's no specific girl being my model. And yes, my gf's all looked a bit that way cuz thats the type of young girls i like. Wich still doesn't mean i painted my gfs. hope that explains it so far. Girls girls girls 1 more time

I'm totaly agree with you! Free paint get over the limits, you able to compose and imagine more, than when you working on photo or tweaking... but some time you get experience like body rotation or expression of emotions. I want to add that who starts from zero they have to use empty paper for drawing not redraw the photo or tweaking. I know it on my own expierence. Usualy artists who editing and tweaking the cannot draw on one's own, they just need the photo... Good Luck.

P.S. Thanks for Patricia, I'm waiting impatiently for the wallpaper with Patricia...

I can't say how many times I have watched this work progress and have been amazed, astounded and all those other good words. It has been a huge help for me to see each step as you post it. I am not a people renderer and attempting my first person ( thankfully I have months to practice before this challenge ends), but I think that is what these challenges are about is not only to have fun, but for us to learn from each other as each work of art progresses. I am thrilled every time you post an update... did I say your work is amazing yet?

Hey mate, great work! I like your work on the skin, there are many good 2D artists, but such nice skin shading is really special. Now some crits, better to say "notices"...the positions of the lights are always the same, to see very easy on the 3 guys, even the light colors are the same. I think you should use the light to bring out the nature of a character better. Every actor or actress has a light setup that suits him or her best, for example, by Anorld Schwarzenegger they very often use a 3/4 light from the side to show his typical face attributes. Maybe a light from the bottom suits Mirsky better? Just an idea...
I like the overall color on the whole, it's not my imagination from the book, but it looks very nice and harmonious!

I'm looking forward for updates, good luck!

Angel, Mate...really nice pieces your putting together. I'm beggining to see what your aiming to acheive coz i thought of doing this... Your choice is a stuff one, but this makes sense and i can see this really works since Eon is a circular object. Colours are cool i wouldn't worry to much, although maybe to similar in contrast to the characters, but i'm sure you'll adjust this when ready.BTW, i can't stop looking at Patricia in the middle, she has beautiful eyes that are hard not to resist, hehe..one word she is HOT!!! :scream:

nwiz: thank you so much my friend, you always find words to flatter me

Beelow: thanks a lot, had dounts the yellow was a blod choice but the longer i look at it the better it seems to work. next step, then shall be fill the circle with an impact of a h2 o bomb. glad you aproved my layout, so far, you and m@ are my main reference to such things :)

kmest: hahaha thanks mate, glad you like the portraits, thou, all are still in early developement.

Ori: oh my thats a hell of a compliment! if i ever make it to finish this i plan to make a wallpaper and eventually a few posterprints for me and some friends, so just let me know if you still like it when i finished it ^^

Mehmi: haha dig-ness! yep, ya should read the bok. i just learned how jarts look like, that mirsky returns from the future as a god and rita, patrikias granddaughter started her quest to find the gate back to "the way" from gaya in what defines eon for me "eternity". greg bear-ness all the way ^^

Ivy: thats probably the most beautiful compliment i ever gotten from an artist. thank you so much! looking forward t your next update as well, hate lots of fun and thanks for your very very nice words!

Johnnymaster: 100% agree. yes, they were supposed to be painted in the same lightsetup. that may be harmonized but boring. i'll work stongly on the light when i come back to portraitrendering, and give them a more interesting light. thank you very much for the constructive crit, much appreciated.

Terro: thanks a lot mate. yep. since my machine is a snail, i work up piece by piece so i can try and change things fast before i drop em into the canvas, so i can keep up the speed high. its always funny when i see a part on itself and then ceck out how it works with the whole thing. glad you like that surprise too ^^

pb castel: thanks mate!

Moscoloco: hahaha thanks mate, glad you like the bonita. and, yeah, dunno how that happened but its nice to have this great feedback wich helps me pushing this whole thing, thou, i entered all 3 sections :/ silly old me

Didea: thanks a lot Mate! yeah the base of the composition is a triangle, classical posterlayout with a circular dynamic that mainly is representing the tubeworlds. the characters are just sketchlevel yet, dont worry, the final rendering of them can pretty much change still wich actually is on the plan after some more environment work. hehe, glad you like patricia, ... i was a bit disappointed when the first book finished suddenly, would have loved to continue the journey with her. ^^ she's without question a great character and i tried painting her with much love... ^^

thanks all for the continous encouragements, the great constructive crits that help me keep the overview and let me say it again! ladies and gentlemen! you all rock, keeeeeep it up!:buttrock::beer:

First of all thanks for the help with my Patricia, I don't know how many would take the time to do what you did to help out :) :) :) :) :) :) I can't get her beautiful like you did, but still working on it .

Now I get to give some advice , be careful of the yellow in the direct center of the image. Any time there is yellow in a work of art the eye is drawn right to it , making it hard for the viewer to focus on the rest of the work.

ok, here's something completely different. i made lots of thoughts on the placement of the letters since it is really pointless to render an image where it anyways will be covered by the title. now please let me know what layout works best for you made quick thumbs from 1-4 :)

nwiz25
11-08-2006, 08:36 AM
hey dude! ... ummm .. i think ... i'll go with 1 ... even 4 is another thought ....

coz 2 n 3 will divert the attention to the text itself ... once its in the centre .. its like .. it hits u then n there! ... preferably 1 or 4 ... :P

Ivy00
11-08-2006, 09:15 AM
hmmm, tough decision for you to make. Ok I had to save your file, throw some EON text on it and move it around to give my best opinion. After doing this and really looking at all the wonderful things going on in your painting here is my opinion.

The text centered above Particia's head I think takes a bit away from Patricia , who is rendered so beautifully I would hate to see focus taken away from that area. There is a lot happening on the right side of the painting so would not put it there. I popped the text over to the top left and thought it fit better in that area. So I was thinking maybe #3 (looks a bit skewed) if it is then, possibly the text skewed so the E starts larger than the N. There is not a lot happening in the top left of your painting, ( the little ships) , but as you move further toward the center all these wonderful things start to happen with it. It is hard to try to place the lettering in such a way that it is noticible , yet does not take away from the art.

Hope that helps a bit.

since this is an important decicion for me (i kept parts rough by purpose before i get to this) i mate thumbs with title and and composition to make this more readable.
now please letme know what works best for you.
1 placed in upper quarter, center simple
2 layed into perspective, right side beam trough o
3 layed into perspective, russin spaceships fly along the letters
4 center layed into perspective spaceships passing through
this is the last step before i start the rendering of the details. kept the layout rough to not be upset to move or redo parts of the sketches. so here is where the serious part starts.
the vote is open :)

I'm torn between 2 and 4. I think that 3 disrupts the composition and 1 is too basic. 2 is nice, but I think the letters need to be shifted slightly left, and 4 seems to move nicely with the flow of the pic.

Hello.
in my opinion first on is most better than others. Its most simple onr, but this book is severe and the name must be severe. And its looks good in composition point, I mean yellow circle in the center and " O " in Eon word are supplement each other. Sometimes simple things looks more winning.
Main rules of composition based on simple geometrical figure, like triangles boxes circles etc.
And in first one your composition is most approximately to correct composition.
Sample of composition construction...
http://photofile.ru/photo/timlank/2079331/38587186.jpg

and to completion, first one is best...
Good Luck...

P.S. "Ivy00 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=220853)" :The text centered above Particia's head I think takes a bit away from Patricia ,

I agree with this, and if you'll resize it to medium size will be GREAT.

Greatto gave a nice sketch and write-up. Similarly, I like 1 and 4: You've already got an extremely symmetrical composition, so might as well pick a logo that goes with the flow and works with that.

Ok did a little more experimenting since you put more of a visual up. Try this with your thumb Sacha and see how it looks. Top center EON , centered under that with smaller letters put Greg Bear.... then on the very bottom center put in letters not as big as the word EON but bigger than the Greg Bear text, ... worlds within worlds. I tried it and it looked more balanced that way and did not take away from the artwork.

so you have:

...........EON...............
............~greg Bear~..................

artwork artwork artwork
artwork artwork artwork
artwork artwork artwork

.....worlds within worlds.......

Sorry about the .... that was the only way the text would post somewhat centered

thanks all for the great support, much appreciated.

since most of you liked 1 or 4, the center titleintegration, i made 4 more versions:

1a - trying Ivy00's alternative version of the typosplit, thouthe tile is bigger that way, the letters over the lower scenes takes a bit much away from the backgroundscenes. thanks anyways for that sugestion Linda :)

1b - Greatto edit 1 based on the doubletri, resized the title sighly to medium, simpleblocks the easiest readable most classical solution
4a - Greatto edit 2, same layout for title4 - tonsa thanks timur ^^ was the hidden triangle so easy to discover? ^^

4b - curved version of 4's 3d title, a version i tried before and thought i could take it up again to ask you what you think.

thanks a lot for your support, please tell me what of those works best for you. the vote goes on :)

Greatto:thank you so much for your help timur, much much appreciated! bout the final composition, i kept details loose for not paint stuff that will be covered anyways so kept the composition lookse on the skeleton. now that the title crystalizes out, it's going to get to the real thing and after the compositiontweaks, rendering starts :) thanks a lot for your most helpful review.

Neville: made 2 versions of 4, and tweaked 1 in proportions, wich is your choice nw? :)

Ivy00 thanks a lot! yep thae cutting was one of my concerns too but thats why i worked on the thumbs, to get the placement fixed so i can drag the parts to the new placement and start the real painting :) thank you so much for your sugestion, tried to place the "worlds within worlds in all thinkable heights but didnt work without covering much of the lower scenes, so i think i'll stick with variations of 1 or 4. what does your eye tell you?

bouboul: thanks you so much mate :)

Tony: lol, yeah, the compositionskeleton was a bit funny to post as such it is. hope the thumbs i made now were more readable :p

Ramy: thanks mate. form the versios of 4, which one would you choose?

mosco: thanks mate.yeah found 2 cool too, but since it is a symetrical composition (iconic sort of compositions help the epic feel) i think i'll stick with simpletext centered or a 3d title. what was your choice?

Walrus: agree mike, thanks a lot for the review. made a variatoin of 4 and resized 1 into proportion. whats your choice?

ok, almost there, please letme kow which titlestyile you like most :) thanks for your support all ^^ you all rock - keep it up!!!:buttrock::beer::scream:

Great...
wonderful, 1b and 1a... I think the sentence "Worlds within worlds" a bit down. V
4a. mm. I dont know how it will looks. I ment 3d words... because "O" in this composition losing it round figure and turns to oval, that deforming this composition. And now round window is losing supplement and balance with "O".

haha I found triangels :) did I win something?

WHooooaaaa, Sacha!!!
I couldn't go on with the contest for a while because of a lot of commisions as christmas is coming and so I missed some steps here.
But holy s**t this is so good, really love it!!

personally i like 1b as the text seems a bit less dominating as 1a and so it leaves space for the design to breathe a bit.
it seems well clean and fonctionel.

But in some kind a way i like 4a also, seems to bring in some more depth in the overall view of the image.

Whooo, sorry how my english s**ks once we've passed midnight,ha,ha!!!

Anyway, thumbs up man!!!Great work!!

not sure if I can post an image with just a talk membership, plan on buying full membership, but going to ask for it for Christmas present. I love this site and feel it needs any support I can give it.

ok here goes.... here is what I did, I know you will paint in or render your own text so I just slapped some text in using the text tool in PS to get a feel for how it will look with the artwork.

The worlds within worlds will fit on the very bottom if you do not make it too big in the kind of blank foreground spot underneath the standing Patricia.

The O in EON should , line up with the circle you have in the middle as Greatto suggests.

Here goes let me see if this image works

You should take the idea of adding the author's name even further: Make 'Eon' small and put GREG BEAR large and on the top. After all, Greg Bear is one of the judges, you might as well curry favor in any way you can! :)

That being said, I like 4B best. Both 4A and 4B echo the perspective you already have going in the scene. 4B has the added bonus of echoing the curve of the cirvle in the center of your piece.

This one look good, but I think proportion is disbalanced.. First "EON" must be much larger. maybe twice and "w.. within w.." larger ...
I agree with walrus in this "GREG BEAR large and on the top." Because it alaws easy to read, through habit first you look at the top to find the author name, then lower comes book name...

thanks all for the great reply's.
i thougth when i made the sketches doing something with greg's name with eon like "Bram Stoker's Dracula" "Marry Shelley's Frankenstein".

unsure, dunno arrrrgh :argh: :banghead: so i'll try what works on some test. only thing thats sure i need to tweak the layout to give it some headspace.

i think i'll stick with 4b since that is basically integrating well with the piece itself and keeps the all flow.

Special thanks to Walrus, Greatto and Ivy00, you were a huge help!

neil: thanks mate. well i tried lower placements too, original idea was to place it over the yellow circle. didnt work that well so i tried headerplacements.

Ivy00: thank you so much again for your paintover. thou my test was simple. printed it in booksize layed it to my table and checked if i would pick it up. as a book or dvd. if that works, the work was ok. with letters that small, it looses too much of the coverart characteristics, tho, i will probably make a more elegant logo since theese blocks are just a draft. :)

And yes a fully designed logo will be cool here. IMO I will make it 20% smaller than what you have now. It don`t need to be so big, the image have to attract the viewer and after he/she read the logo.

Ivy00
11-10-2006, 11:10 AM

Greatto: thanks a lot mate :) yup you found my lines again ^^ hahaha how you always make that ^^ thanks for the review, yup built on that grid i actually thought that solution might work best for a good integration of the text to the piece.

daWinky: thank you so much! lol as for sleep, i continuosly tell myself to get some :p its rushtime again, challenges here always do that to me but its great. actually the result of such an intense time is always a nice piece for my portfolio plus a a huge learning process, each step to go. therefor, i appreciate this very very uch, i think my learn and expiriencecurve since i joined my first challenge made a nice jump and i am thankful for that :)

beelow: thanks a lot bro. yup i know. but as you might know yourself, a solid base is always important and i wanted to be sure things work before i render tons of details and then end up by "can i tweak that now" "oh no i'll loos all that details i spent hours of painting on" so i kept things loose til i nailed the composition. almost there, and ready to go :)

ok, now that i have most elements where i want em to, i started blocking in the upper left part working on values in the left lower part, started rendering laniers and mirkys portraits and thought i make a little between post. whats new: upper left corner, little bit of thistledowns architecture, buildings on wires. next to lanier, a few buildings, not decieded yet on the city.
value update on the sixth chamber, started bringing out the details of the fog such as the energy coupling converter controlstation towards the image center, the elevator cranes. i am quiet pleased with the compositionupdate in that section, now tons of details have to be painted.

Ivy00: hahaha please don't i'd rather prefer having good friends than fans :p as for the overpaint, that just cuz its much easier for me to do so than to eplain things by words only. glad that helped ad looking forward to see your next steps :)

gardogg: thanks a lot gary. well thias fairly simple. in most cases, i draw things i had drawn many times before, so i can simply draw form imagination and memories. 3d helps tons to be forced to study what has wich direction and material properties and... well i said it arlier, i am far from working perfect, if something bugs me and i cant get it right i get a ref to check whats off as well when i gotta fix something. I just think to start from a photo is wrong cuz then you will be stuck to your ref instead of being able to develop freely.

Greatto: tonsa thanks for those words, i dont think i'd been able to write something like that even if i'd intended to  well, i feel humbled. basically, there's always a classic way to approach something. in my own case, i jump very often between steps, i like improvisaton, letting things loose very often cuz there's shapes or things i can make out just on the fly. thats so far not the pro way to do so, under timepressure, its essential to have a very clear planing process, that allows you using time as good as possible while i am just having fun here to let the piece "grow". i may work as conceptartist and odeller, but those you mean with pro's i think are of a leage i still look up to. still, much appreciated :) thank you so much.

tastatura: lol yeah, 3 entries was the most stupid thing i decieded yet being in a challenge. i can handle it more or less on ccost of sleep, and keep pushing things on my limits. wich of course is nor smart nor really eccicient, but i have much fun in all 3 sections and trough my 3d entry i also am forced to clarify style, functionionality and crystalclear visualizing of my projects components and characters wich speeds up painting as well :) glad you like my version of patricia, i went trough 2 books with her (and her granddaughter) and also with lanier mirsky and olmy, so its nice to bring out what they left on me while i was on the journey with them. well, hope you like the little update, now on with the fun :)

just a screenshot of the centerscene - death. Actualy wanted to bring in a few emotiontions and feelings i had when i pictured ppl facing the end of all they know, so gave it kind of a religious touch. A mother, covering her child, a business man "forgive me father for i have sinned" - a hummer crashing with a mercedes - and up in the sky wing like rays around the mushroomcloud like spread wings - hidden.
"Nothing is dearer than life as you shall remember when the angel of death on the brink of a final strike is upon you." - passage out of my voiceover from my trailer ^^
Ok, thats the basic plan when painting the center. I might add more symbolic elements but mainblocking in center done now as well :)

ok, olmy has changed much, and that has a reason. he probably was the character for me to read. there's much politics, always when his parts of the journey run, but in "eternity" my picture of him has changed much. instead of the slick political activist, i started seing him different. ex-cop, sharpminded ex-soldier, still taking more risk than its smart, a true ruffneck an straight forward. so i gave him eaglelike features, sharp, bowed nose, more weathered and plan giving him grey sides on his hair. as for lanier, i tried make him attractive, since all girls get a crush on him on the stone. so i tried making him a tired looking but attractive man around 35, and as for mirsky, he's at the end a cery curious man, reasonable, so i tried to make him less agressive, smarter, layed weight on an intelligent look. step 1 on portrait refinements done, more refinements after sleep. :) all c&c most welcome, as usual.

As I have watched this work progress , I have often said to myself, "I wish I could watch over his shoulder as he works"... and then you post that excellent tutorial. (took me 3 hrs to download with my lousy connection, ha ha) It helped a lot of things click for me. As you can probably tell by my entry here,(and lack of portfolio) I am not an experienced digital artist, my Eon entry is the first serious thing I have attempted to do digitally and only entered because I knew it would make me push myself and work and most of all learn. I am a potter and sculptor and watching the tutorial you posted is so similair to sculpting , it really helped me a lot. So , I am going to do a bunch of face studies and commit myself to learning :) Thank you Sacha, very few artists are willing to share and you are so generous with your skill and knowledge I want to make sure you know how much it is appreciated.

left side: added tons and tons of details i am rendering right now. added a trainstation in the sixth chamber right behind the ramp of the road and boosted the valuefalloff.

right side, just some sketched in not yet rendered elements, like lakesm more buildings, pushed up the cliff line i flipped the spaceship with its tail to the viewer to poit INTO the pieceand put it into the foreground.

header set the perspective right of the bowstructure and set right the main values - leftside started light some of the buildings, just a draft version.

knocked the portraits more out from their surroundings also let the stones emitting light interact with the hair, sketchy yet but i think the things look better if hey interact with each other.

well hope you like the update, more work on the detailing as soon there's some visable progress. :)

warpy: rofl glad i have my "bigest fan at last" now too :p very scary

Greatto: glad you liked the little tut i made :)by far not where it should be but at least showing the methods :)

brrrhmmm: yes, thats the main focus on the environments. i took myself a little freedom out and flipped the circleshaped display of the library to a vertiical disply to have a nice center.and of course its patricia standing in front of it, wathcing "death"

Ivy00: you are very welcome :) well i am not worried to share a few things i know and show some various ways to approach things when i get asked, and if i think it's helpfull to many, i pst it hopeing it does :) since every artist has his own ways to do things, it might be very interresting anyways to look over each others shouders.
yes, my way to work comes very close to sculpting, block out silhouettes, then get main volumes in place, add in light, keep pushing and pulling values til they take place. i work extremely loose and freely, no particular order in steps and tweaking often on the fly.i also use photoshop in a very basic way, so not much fancy ways to createm just use of basic tols i like and painting straigh forward.
To join the challenge for learning is really great. i can tell i always learned very much on these, and more than all, since i lost most of my stuff a while back i have had no actual reel sort of a gap i was busy the last few months to stuff with new paintings, new models, basically, build up a portfolio that is up to date. so there's the other plus on challenges, you actually get a nicely highly polished piece for your portfolio - you are forced to finish as a longtermproject - on a deadline :) one of my biggest weaknesses on noncomissional works is i am a perfectionist and there's always something i find i dislike or can do better, so i often finish my works to 90%, then get stuck annoyed and let it rot ^^ a challenge actually helps me finish a piece :) glad the tut helped you and looking forward what you make out of it :)

Best of luck to you all and keep on rocking :)

Great work Sacha... As you know i love your artistic style... My only comment, is that Patricia looks way too perfect compared to the other, more humane looking, characters... I really like how you managed to mix so many ellements without clutching (dont know if i spelled this right) the composition...Very nice work...

ok, started on some volumetrics, and yay, love my cloudbrush for doin this
mainly tinted the whole piece slightly purple and then colordoged out some highlights, then copied the whole piece to a new laye and started hardlight the whole scene to get the values right. after some speak with Walrus (thanks mate, helpful as usual) i actually let many parts simply drop to the background. now more detail brushups, at least i could unify the piece now, abd te tweaks brought the characters strongly forward as well.
see ivy? promissed an update in the next 2 days, so here it is :)

Hey Sacha, I'm starting to worry you might leave this one unfisnished too. There is still too much area out of focus in your image. Just put your head down and make sure it's done before the deadline because it will be a real shame if it's not.

Thanks for the 2nd movie tutorial. Those clips are very helpful and insightful. Unlike the one with the ogre and the fairy I found this one much easier to follow for some reason. Looking forward to future installments of your challenge and tutorials.

niva: welcome mate. and thanks, dont worry, if my calculations work, 4 or 5 evenings should do for the cleanup and 1-2 for the fxlight and tweaks. and stuff. so i think THIS time, i WILL bring it to an end :)

Ivy00: ahahaha defiantely dont envy walrus' new fanbunch ^^ rofl. *i willlllll not overdetail it this time i mustn't paint it all with a 1 pixel brush... focus focus* arrr ^^ ok, hope that works, i will try to keep it painterly in many parts so either way, send em to cali already ^^

fineworks on the portraits started, also tried to bring in more expression to the characters. the curiousity of mirsky, a touch of sadness to patricia, determination to olmy, and same for lanier...
as for the details, added many many to the lower right corner yet, and some more to come - basically tons of detailing ahead, but start getting happy with the way it takes. as i decieded to not overpolish the piece, i'll try keep much of the painterly feel it has and will try to keep the detailing focussed :)
7.35am - time for a lil break and more detailworks after a bit of rest :) all c&c most welcome as usual.

Looking good, my friend. Nice detail work on the city. 2 character comments for you:

The Patricia in the lower right, standing in front of Axis City? I could be wrong, but it feels a bit like her legs are too short for her torso.

Secondly - and this is just a matter of personal preference - it feels to me like Mirsky's face, specifically his jaw, is too rounded. It feels like he has a lot of "baby fat" on his face, and instead of making him look tough, it comes off to me as sulky/pouty, and many years younger than he should be. Maybe a slightly leaner look would make him look a bit older, tougher and more military? (I also think the eyes could be "tougher," but I can't put my finger on what isn't working about them for me. I can put my finger on the roundness of the jaw, but not the eyes, so i guess I'm not being too much help there... let me think about it.)

Anyhow, good luck with the detailing...! :)

self explaining post wich actually is - i know - a bit late and i really need your help now.

A: the more calm version, weight on deepspacefeel - seeing the stone from the outside while the russian armada approaches it
or
B: trow it out, put back the beam over thistledown city's buildings and downscaled all characters to give em more room and also, 1 single vanishing point chosen in the lower part now (prolly would do that to a as well if you tell me its better.
now please help me to deciede, whats working better?

MarkyG
01-05-2007, 08:03 AM
Hi, for what it's worth I prefer A.

I like the framing better, the tighter grouping of the people and the colour. It just feels tighter/richer overall. Fantastic work!

...although I do prefer seeing Patricia's shoulder on B.

Markg

icedeyes

IIIKSS, now you really make me hesitate, just like you,ha,ha!!!
In some kind a way the upper part of A is more rich indeed, but I find the upper part of B gives a lot of dynamics to the title.BUt maybe that's also because in B, you've got perspective on both sides and in A only on the left side.
So personally for the upper part I'll take A but with perspective on both sides like B.
And then maybe put the beam in ,but just from the "O" of EON.

For the lower part of the pic personaly I prefer "B".Indeed her shoulder is more dynamic too, to me.
just my two cents bro!!ha,ha
Keep on rocking mate!master stuff you got there!

01-05-2007, 09:14 AM
well actu ally i like all :) the last one C is very Good:) this small light that comes from behinde of her head is so perfect;) I prefer C one is coolest
but i think it will be beter if u will turn to again to right this chamber at bottom-left corner...

Ivy00
01-05-2007, 10:00 AM
I like B, but it kind of cuts the picture in half, maybe some light as in B but not such a hard lined beam, kind of like in A ..... so maybe a combination of A and B but not as harsh as B?

walrus
01-05-2007, 02:37 PM
I like 'C'.'
The light on the top of 'B' is great, and very distinctive of 'Eon,' but it makes the logo hard to read. (It would be my favorite if you weren't using a logo.)
As for the ground, i like seeing the light on it, it ties it together with the light from the round screen and keeps the bottom from being too much of a muddy mess.
Just my 2 cents, translated to your local currency of course.

I plan on joining the next challenge. I have been busy working on my sketchbook on cgtalk like in my signature and I had to buy another hard drive to store my artwork. Plus all of my art programs was taking up my space along with my old art. 160 GIGS  I am set for a while on the space at least for like 7years lol.

Yeah I like the c composition the best.
Here is a suggestion try turning around that character (the standing guy) that is by the glowing portal in the middle of the picture and give him an evil smile with glowing eyes to add thae evil element like on an epic movie poster.
