View Full Version : Beginner question: cutting nurb splines
lossy 02-02-2003, 01:08 AM someone showed my how, but I can't duplicate it on my own, and online help is only getting me more lost. I duplicated a curve on a nurbs object, and want to create a boundry surface. In order to do this, I need to cut the curve into 4 sections. I've tried Detach Curves but that is not doing what I want...I just need to divide the curve into 4 sections at the points that I desire.
I know this is a stupid question, but I just can't seem to figure this very basic task out.

itīs the right way...
but anyway : duplicate ur curve > press the rmb > inssert knot
set 4 of them go to the edit curves menu and select detach curves
shoud work

ok, I must be doing something wrong...inserting a knot doesn't do anything. I've tried detach curves both with and without inserting knots, and it does the same thing:
I cannot get four curves seperated where I want them. Instead I get several (more than 4) curves that overlap each other. I try zooming in and carefully deleting them, but no matter what I do, the boundary object I create has completely @$!#ed geometry. I cannot believe I'm having so much trouble with such a simple task...no tutorial I can find covers such a basic procedure.
I've tried restarting maya and my machine as well.

i dont think you need to insert a knot.
once you have a curve do this:
with your cursor over the curve, depress RMB and go to Curve Point mode. LMB the red dot to the location you want to cut. when you're done, Edit Curves > Detach Curve.
works here.

you can set multiple curve points by just shift LMB with Curve Point turned on, just in case you didnt know.

thanks so much! I knew it had to be something very simple...just missing that vital mundane detail.
