View Full Version : Football Helmet Maddness!

For reasons unknown I'm trying to model a football helmet! I'm pretty novice at max, so assume I don't know stuff :) I'm happy with the shape I've made so far. When I decided to start this, I tried finding wires of peoples 3D helmets to have something to model after.

Derpapa had modeled a beautiful helmet quite some time ago. So I'm trying to mimic his model. I'm far from anywhere yet, but check it out:

At this point I'm trying to raise the top center and get a ridge to the bottom. The problem I'm running into kinda goes around the shell modifier. I have to add an edit poly or something after the shell modifier so I just affect the top surface faces.

That red mowhawk thing is what I want to raise a bit. Also when I raise it, the turbosmooth modifer smooths the edges of it. I don't want that. How can I keep the sides of that clean and straight?

Hey! Looks good so far! A little tip: work just on the outer surface, (without thickness) If you satisfied with that, add a shell modifier! and collapse it down.
The earhole looks way small to me. Do you have references? Pics?

EDIT: The mohawk thing, there are 2 ways to avoid smoothing from TS (turbosmooth) one is, todeal with smoothing groups, the other is to generate very dense geometry. I'm still a fan of solid chamfer, one of the Meshtools feature that did not madeit into max yet :)

Some time ago I did a short tut how to use Meshtools: http://www.ground-studios.de/stuff/meshtools/meshtools_eng.htm

cheers

Do you think I should download meshtools? I dont want to confuse myself by adding any crazy plugins... Like I want to learn this program first.

You do not need meshtools, you can do almost all with max. only solid chamfer is a thing that is worth to install meshtools. There are more advanced script collections out there (orionflame, polyboost for instance) but they cost.

Anyway, keep eyes open at scriptspot.com and you will often find little helpers, that do exactly what you did in 3 hours yesterday, in seconds ;)

the highlighted is what I want to remain flat and sharp. I can't figure out smoothing groups, they're annoying!
