View Full Version : caches still disapearing! wow maya seriously has issues
Phredrek 10-03-2006, 07:58 PM Hey guys!
Earlier I posted about having some problems with caching. I then realized that just by doing segmented caches in chunks of 5-20frames I was able to solve the problem of keeping my cache files under 2gigs.
however now maya just randomly will delete the header cache file of some of my files. this is rediculous. some of our scenes take a full day to cache and we don't have time to have maya just go and clear some of our caches.
is there a fix to this? is maya just retarded?
do I have to pay the 1300 bucks just to get alias/autodesk to address the problem? shouldn't it just work to begin with?
your help is greatly apreciated

I'm afraid I can't help you with the disappearing cache problem, but I'd like to point out something that a lot of people forget - you don't have to cache everything, only the attributes that you're going to be using for rendering (often only density, heat and perhaps color). If you for example only cache density, your cache will be more than ten times smaller than if you cache all the attributes.

Thanks for your input Anders!
we have been doing that... and we are still having issues with maya just deleting the cache. Sometimes the cache file itself goes to zero bytes after saving.

An important thing to be aware of is that Maya moves the cache from the temp location it was initially created in to your project data directory when you save the file. It also copies the cache to the temp location when you open a scene. The idea is to avoid changing your scene's cache if you do not save the scene. It could be having trouble with paths, especially if your project location is on another machine.
Also it might be good to avoid chunking caches... instead use cache per frame, which is currently better supported than arbitrary sized chunks.

I think you're on the right track Duncan!
something about moving from the temp to the project cache directory. We save everything on the network and then open it up on other computers. plus we need to have it on the network because we use Deadline to render it through the farm.
We can't cache per frame because we can only use a sampling rate of 1, but some of our scenes need two.
My question would be, is there a way to make sure the path remains the same? or just making sure that it points in the right place? the button and area to change the cache source is greyed out. But even if it is pointing in the right place, it'll sometimes still won't pick it up and just give us a blank fluid.
We've even tried backing up the cache file(s) just in case maya decides to screw them up, when we go to replace them it's STILL blank....
our fluids take a long time to process and now time is going to run out....
we are getting desprate for help, all insights are very much apreciated!
thanks!
