View Full Version : help me create this in photoshop ...
Hey everyone,
I have some houses i rendered out of maya with just simple colours assigned to them. Can someone point me in the direction of how i can filter the images in photoshop to create a look such as what is show in the picture. I am not new to photoshop but i could use some help on acheive the fade in/out of color and dark outlines. i'm not so much worried about the outlines i can render those out of maya. i would just like help on getting that water colour look with the fading in of the colour and fading out to white.
thank you

Theres really not a filter you can use to achieve that look. It's going to some solid work to achieve that. Explaining how to color and blending is kinda difficult. Look under the tutorial threads and read up on those subjects. What your trying to do really isnt that hard. So it shouldn't take you long. Hope I could help.

oh, sorry about that then. Well blending is somthing I'm still trying to figure out myself, as I have only been digitally painting for like a week or two now. But like I said before, check out the tutorials thread and see if you can find anything related to your question.
Gonna be some hard work to get that effect, geuss you can achieve it using blending modes and subtle masking of the colors, be aware that you can also set blending modes on your brushes for more control on how colors blend with oneanother. I'm not a expert on blending try and find some articles explaining the various blending modes and see what they do.

I might try making a new layer, then make a selection along the edge of a wall. Apply a gradient (foreground color to transparent). That way, it fades to what ever color is on the layer below. You could then add a slight ripple effect and/or smudge tool to the gradient area for a painter-esk type look.
Still would require much hand painting, but the gradient could save time.

Hey, something else you may want to try, is messing around with the brush tips. For example, the image you showed looked like a watercolor image to me. just to start I would practice using brushes with feathered (or hazy tips) when you select the brush tool you'll also notice on the top bar, it says something like "file browser, brushes etc." If you click on brushes and drag it into the workspace you have a variety of options to work with. One of interest to you may be the "wet edges" Of course you can also create textures and use those as additions to your brushstrokes (adding a wet paper tooth look or something)
I would also mess with the opacity a little bit since it seems like you want the background to come through the image, it gives it a little more of a natural feel.
Most importantly though, experiment.
