Hey all, long time lurker here.....I've just been way too intimidated to post. I figured what the hell, the only way to get better is to get my work out in the open and get feedback. This was modeled and lit in Max 5, and painted in PS, and Painter.

I love it.. looks like it could be a real cool establishing shot with the camera moving in slowly...

Again... I must say I love the style and composition of it.

There's an entire story that can be played out on just this one picture.. Brilliant job! Are you planning on getting into concept/environment work ,or something else, once you've graduated?

Keep it up:)

Cheers,
Steve

I agree 100%. The fact that you're intimidated to post this...makes me intimidated...wonderful wodel, and even more impressive painting. Great job.

Great. I love the feeling. The model looks simple, but the mood is ossom :)

But tell me, is this inspired by the city of Menzoberanzan, the city of the drows in R.A Slavatore's books. Reminds me of it.

Keep it up

i think the city could use some brighter lights. the lighting in your shaded view looks very good, with the warm lights from below, but in the final render theres not much left of that..

maybe try some stronger lighting to bring out the details of the city some more and stop it from blending in too much with the background

Wow, that is very nice =).

One thing I thought about when ive studied the pic for a while, is that the mountan look more cartoonish than the castle.
I'ts ofcourse a matter of taste, but personaly I think it would look even better if the mountain around was , hmm sharper.
Anyway, I think its very cool =)

Great atmosphere!

I really like the paint job on the castle and the sky but don't quite like the painted mountain. Personally, I think all the painted details just steals attention from the castle.

I couldn't resist making a new comp of your image where I replaced the mountain with the one in you lit mesh picture and even though those two images don't fit exactly I thought the image worked better (a bit less busy)... I guess it's just my personal taste though...

Anyhow great work!

I don't like that thing... to paint over a 3d rendering. It sounds to me like cheating. You paint, OR render it!
However, I like very much the result... oh, if only it was all painted...

Great! I take it this is going to remain a still picture, as it's partly painted. Cuz otherwise how would the painting and 3d work in an anim? Keep up the good work!

BTW, I kinda agree with the poster who said lights are too low - though the low lights give a snowed under feel that's nice, not sure if 'snowed under' is what's right here.

Thanks for the continued feedback guys.... With this kind of support and crits you can be sure I'll post more in the future...

Stephen Vyas: I hope to get hired as a modeler in the game industry when I grad in Sept.

floepi: I never heard of R.A Slavatore's books... I'll have to check them out... The concept for this piece was orgionaly inspired by Scrabania of Odd World 1.... Odd World Inhabitants is the studio that I would trade anything to work for

Stimpy: thanks for the suggestions... I'm currently working on other projects right now, but I definatly plan on returing to this piece before I graduate

SPENEN & daevid: That bg mountian gave me quite a headache while painting this piece... I'll definatly tweak it when I touch this piece up

William GUiLE: I'm sorry you feel that way....but I disagree...it's not cheating...but you're entiled to your opinion... glad you like the end result though.

To everyone else. Thanks!

Looks really great man!
Love the mood and the final look, it would be a great establishing shot with alittle camera move in there... Anyhow keep it up!

Why does it matter? Its the end result that counts...Would you paint a painting with only 1 paint brush??? No you'd use many so why should an image created digitaly be any different... Just my 2 cents.
