For questions/answers on the Challenge, please post here...

1. Please read the instructions before posting here.

2. Please help us to answer questions. If you see a question already answered, please refer the person to that answer so that we don't keep repeating ourselves.

Technical Support

For all technical errors while using the Challenge site, please email me (Robert Mibus, robert@ballisticmedia.net (http://forums.cgsociety.org/robert@ballisticmedia.net)).

Challenge-Specific

Q: How early do I have to start submitting milestones?

A: As early as possible. Although there is no due date earlier than the final closing date, part of the final judging vote puts emphasis on Community Interaction, which means that people who 'hold back' their work in progress till the last minute can be penalized.

Q: Can we work in teams? What about pairs?

A: Yes, teams can submit to the video (trailer) category. See also the Looking For Group (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=410116) thread.

Q: I'm using a new email but the challenge keeps sending stuff to my old one. How do I fix that?

A: You go into CGTalk's UserCP (User Control Panel) and change your email address there. If you still have problems, email me.

Q: What if I am a winner and I want a different prize? E.g. What if I win the Grand Prize but I want the Runner Up prize instead?

A: You can contact the other winner with the prize that you want, and ask if they want to do an exchange. What you guys do with your prizes is up to you, and we're not going to be involved in it.

Q: How do I actually enter the competition?

A: Go to the challenge site and click on "Enter The Challenge". Upload your pictures through the challenge site submission ("Submit Your Entry") or the CGChallenge Uploader.

Q: Do I tag every concept sketch uploaded as a milestone, or just THE final concept sketch.

A: Everything is a milestone until you do the final image.

Q: How I can get out of this challenge?

A: Just stop submitting.

Q: Can I have multiple entries?

A: Not in a single category. As stated in the guidelines, no multiple entries although it's possible to enter multiple categories as long as your submissions are vastly different in concept.

Q: Can I upload my WIP images to my own server? Is that counted?

A: No. Please use the Challenge site facility to upload your Work-In-Progress. The purpose of the image hosting on the Challenge site is to give everyone the equal opportunity to post their work-in-progress, and have it hosted. At the conclusion of the Challenge, you will undoubtedly remove any Work-In-Progress images from your personal website and generate broken links all over CGTalk - so please use the Challenge upload facility.

Q: What's the difference between 'Illustration' and '3D Scene'?

A: Illustrations are all we previously had in the challenges. 2D / 3D work, post-processing, go and make some final artwork. For the 3D Scene, we're after a really well-done model (of an environment or an object), which you'll show us with a short animation (eg. a turntable or flythrough).

Technical

Q: Are random or parametric terrain and foliage/plant generation software (Bryce/Vue/Terragen) allowed?

A: Yes

Q: Can I use Poser, Daz 3D or pre-fabricated models?

A: No. The purpose of the "Challenge" is to challenge artists in creating original concepts and characters. Where's the challenge in using pre-fabricated characters as main subjects?

Q: Can I use Poser to make background characters?

A: No, if your characters are tiny it won't take you much effort to model some lowpoly humans anyway.

Q: Can I use a trial version of a software?

A: Yes. We don't care. The final image must not have watermarks on it.

Q: The guidelines in the instructions says that the resolution for the final image should be at least 2657 pixels wide and/or 3636 high, 300 DPI (portrait). Why do you need such a high resolution for?

A: We want to train people to create artwork for print. Therefore, things such as detailed textures and meshes become important in the creation of your artwork. The final image needs to be prepared for print, and we want everyone to work towards producing work that is print quality by habit.

Q: What resolution do you want the final image to be exactly? What about if we make the image a different aspect ratio and orientation?

A: Your final image aspect ratio and orientation will dictate your final resolution. We want images that will print at 300dpi on a 22 x 30cm page (whatever orientation). Please do your research and work this out yourselves. Your final image will need to be rendered at enough resolution to print and hold up detail.

Q: Because of hardware limitations, is it ok to render a part and use it as a background, or render in "layers" and composite it all togueder later?

A: All post trickery is allowed and encouraged in the Illustration and Trailer categories.

Q: Any problems if I do it with a student license of Maya?

A: If it is watermarked then yes. Otherwise, no.

Q: Is it ok to use vray, RenderMan or 3rd party renderers for rendering?

A: Why wouldn't it be? (yes)

Q: While I know its ok to use 2D textures in this 3D project....is it going to be ok to use a 2D element as a back drop? Like a background....like a matte painting?

A: Yes. Allowing and encouraging a mixture of 2D and 3D techniques is why we've combined the two categories.

Q: Are we allowed to use web downloaded textures?

A: Yes, but they will have to be modified to suit your image. If stock textures are recognised there may be a penalty by the community and the judges, consciously or unconsciously.

I'm a bit confused about the difference between "Illustration" and "3D Scene" catagories. If I took a still from my 3D Scene entry and painted over a bit of it, could I then enter it into the Illustration catagory as well?

...I've never read Eon. Seems like an interesting concept. Reagan era astronauts who discover the earth nearly a millenium away. You know, if I had an extra two hours a day I'd go to ebooks and download the novel, but I don't. Could we start a post simply detailing story points for spazzes like me?

I've got so many questions that will decide the design of my entry. Hypothetically, if I were to go and design a building out of seashells and granite, Bear might come back and say, "I never said that! They used metal!" Do you see my predicament?

I too am a little confused about the difference between the 3D scene and the illustration. The only thing that I can gather is that the 3d scene HAS to have an animation to prove that it is a 3d scene.

And the illustration is just a concept (possibly)... or it is just the same as the 3d scene you just don't have to create the animation.

Or is the illustration supposed to be like a character close up or profile (possibly)... and the 3dscene supposed to be just an environment... or are they all supposed to be an environment...

See how we are a little confused?

Oh and by the way...(in the instructions) under the 3dscene:

• Final Render - 4 seconds - JPG (online) &

Isn't that supposed to be a movie not an img... or does it need to be a series of jpgs... or is it just an overlook.

This challenge looks exciting! :bounce:

I have two questions:

1) Is it permissable to use a generic human model that I have created as the basis of creating models for the challenge? Or does every single model that I use in the entry need to be created from scratch for the challenge (or at least from a box ;) )?

2) I am confused by the prizes listed for the trailer challenge (4 copies of XSI, 4 nVidia Quadros, etc.) Does this mean that there will be 4 grand prize winners?

Thank you! :)

1) No

2) It's a team prize, so the winning team has to split the prizes up. I'd suggest a maximum of four people in a team so it's easy to divide stuff :)

Hi There! great and unusual theme.

I have a question about 3d scene category. Still image should be a hogh resolution frame from the short movie? Or can it be processed a bit more than the animation?

Pyke
10-04-2006, 11:37 AM
Im assuming that this is a faq covering all 3 categories (2D, 3D, and Trailer).

My question comes in choosing music for the trailer...is it expected that the soundtrack is also original?
I know that evrything else has to be created specifically for the challenge (no previous models etc etc etc), as has been the standard for all challenges since I can rememeber...HOWEVER! This is the first time that I can think of that the challenge has been related to creating a 'short film', which brings in an entire new set of questions.

Hi Mibus,

IMO you did not answered exactly to the core of the question:
Is it possible to enter on both illustration and scene categories the same view of a scene where one will be as a still image and the second will be an animated one??

Thank you for any info.

two questions from me,

first, can we model elements, even whole environment and just paint them in 2d software? or 3d elements just can be block models for referance?

second one,in 3d scene can we use composite efects? such as faking haze, camera projection, layer compositing (background, clouds etc.)

Perhaps I'm just dense and I've missed something very obvious, but when exactly is the deadline? I haven't seen a hard date anywhere (and I throught I read all the pages on the challenge page fairly carefully), just people saying something about it lasting three months and stuff.

One question about the 3d scene category.
How much the animation counts? Is it the same as the turntable in Journey...
I see no difference between an entry in the 3d scene category and a 3d image in the illustration category just that the former must have the animation.

I think that 3d scene category needs some more comment.

Now I understand that we create a 3d scene from which we create an illustration as previously in 3d category (with all postproduction allowed) and on the basis of the same
scene we create a short animation also with some postproduction. Animation may differ
a bit from the illustration.

Is this interpretation correct?

Mibus
10-04-2006, 11:30 PM
arturro: Some processing should be OK, but it's really a showcase of the model, not your photoshop-post-processing skills :)

Pyke: Everything has to be original

DanielWalsh: I don't see why not.

Velarion: In the 'Illustration' category, certainly!

Nomad: No. Although you may enter multiple categories, the entries must be conceptually different.

cgoz: In the Illustration category, absolutely. Promoting a mixed 2D/3D workflow is one of the reasons we made the Illustration category what it is.

bombeu: The judging will be done on the animation (ie, turntable, rock, or flythrough) submitted. The emphasis in the 3D Scene category is on the model work, not the picture as a whole.

M31: Except in the 3D Scene category, yes. We want to see how well you can create a 3D representation of something, post-processing changes that.

CodeNothing: No. You must make something explicitly for the category you're entering it for.

Composing own music for trailer is a bit tough requirement in my opinion - I mean many trailers out there are using music from Movies like "LotR" or "theRock" not mentioning about some band songs. If is a question of copyrights - wouldn't be enough if we write them at the end of the trailer?

Seriously - making our own music gonna suffer in way lower trailer perception impact... but that just my opinion...

Wow. This is really a broad topic, and it seems like if you really want to do good, you'd probably have to get the book and do your own research there. It's a really dedicated project...if only they would make it more specific like, "oh, draw a scenery from chapter 5", or, "do the main character and his lads in a gigantic environment."

We don't require that you use music however, if you don't think the trailer would benefit from the music you can add leave it out. Or, alternatively see if you can find a team mate who actually composes music.

Mibus: With regards to the 3D scene category, is the animation strictly limited to 4-8 seconds or are longer shots allowed? 8 seconds is a bit of a squeeze for what I have in mind.

You are welcome to make it longer, however remember that the animation component here is more to show off your models than animation, and would typically only be a camera move of some description.

Hi Mibus

I don't quite get it...i didn't even know of the existance of the book , but they say it is not nessesary to have read it (Of course I will)

...Are we supposed to recreate a scene already of the book or are we free to create based on the story a new tale?

For example if I participate in the creation of the trailer, Can I use one still of it to participate in the illustration or in the 3D Scene category or both?

If I can not find someone to work with in the team category, is it possible to work alone?

I am happy to see the Challenges going for a higher level, but I am afraid that the time could be so little, I mean, it sounds like a lot more work to do to create something convincible at least for the trailer entry. I say this because participating in Challenges means extra time of my work, I Understand that sacrifice is allways needed and that not everyone has the same schedule, but anyway I will do my best to get into it.

Thanks

question: why are some of the 3d entrants labelled '3d scene' & some labelled '3d model'

Your final entry requires an illustration plus a 4 - 8 second animation of your completed scene (not just a model).

but the way you put it, Robert, it can be just a model:

Entries should deal with the events, and themes of the book.

Whilst you may enter multiple categories, each entry must be a unique concept, thus a still from an animation, may not form the basis of an illustration entry.

Teams may be any number of people. From one to 1 million (or more). Realistically teams of 4 are optimum, that is what the prize pool accomodates for.

I also have some questions:
Is it ok to enter a game art (lowpoly) in "3d scene" category? If so, will there be limitations?
May I use my entry in other projects, specifically game?

M31
10-05-2006, 06:32 AM
@Mibus, thanks for correcting me on that. I guess the 3D scene/model category is confusing because it doesn't fall into either the traditional category of still or full animation. So the judging focus will be on the quality of the modelling in this one? Whereas it is more story for the other two (illustration and trailer)?

Another question(s), this time about the trailer challenge:

Right now I am going solo in the trailer challenge. However, I would eventually like to have help in the music department. I wouldn't expect anyone to want to commit to doing music for me until I produce visuals they find worthwhile. I am hoping to find a composer to join me in a month or so. I just want to make sure that this is okay.
Voice actors don't have to be full team members/CG Talk members do they? I'll probably just have a few people I know record a few lines for me.

Thank you to the administrators for organizing this awesome challenge and answering all our questions!

Mibus
10-05-2006, 07:02 AM
M31: Yes, the judging on the 3D Scene (/ model) category will be less story-based and more based on technical excellence.

Waiting for new team members should be fine, though if they don't have accounts then they can't be officially pulled into the team. Think of it as crew vs. cast - crew members (modelers, animators, etc) have to have accounts and be officially included. Cast members - voice actors, regular actors, etc - don't. (It'd be nice for them if you credited them in the short, of course :))

Mike-inel: That's OK, but you'll still be competing against people with a lot more polys

I go back in a certain way on TheSOracle question which have no answer. IS there a way to switch from one categories to another. I explain : for 2/3 of the work, I would make the same work in illustration category and 3d category. But depending on how much I progress when we arrived in December I'll choose to enter more illustration category or 3d one. So how can I do (and can I do it) ? I don't want to "hide " my job and choose in december as I think the interessant thing for this challenge is just to share our WIP. Would I have to ask you to delete my entry in one category and then I'll repost in the other one ?

Well I ask many things but I'm not sure I'll have time to do it :scream:

Hello, I'm thinking about entering the Trailer section to do previz or full 3d animation blast, not sure about my time schedule.
Can I also enter the Illustration challenge to create sort of a movie-poster for the trailer done in Trailer Challenge. I think the answer is yes but the two concepts has to be unique ? So no use of same title logo and models ... ?

Is it allowed to use free soundfiles available on the internet (sounddogs.com etc.) ? Of course it is much better to create it by myself or a team member ... but anyway ?

May I suggest something... It would be cool to have a (sticky) thread where everybody could ask questions about Eon and where those able to do it will reply. I say that because it is a little difficult for personn which english language is not there own language to read all the inspiration page and understand all the distinction (must say I don't have understand everything about singularity).

I find really intersting to make an illustration about a story. So I didn't want just to do an sf illustration with a city or something else and not feet really the book.

Hey mibus.
Going quickly through your answers on this thread made me realize that things aren't the way I first realized them.
I didn't read the book yet, but I went through the inspiration section and I immedietly knew what I'll be generally doing, seeing as half the images there are about awesom massive scale detailed envierments. I thought of entering the 3d category and doing a massive envierment scene myself (just like last time (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=275606)). This will require me to render alot of different parts and passes seperately and then composite them. I just figured I'll do it all in After effects this time instead of photoshop cause of the animation.

now I hear that you don't encourage the post work and that the emphasys isn't on the final image itself but more on just the modeling ? How can I make a whole futuristic city with emphasis only on the modeling ? I mean without all the effects and post work it just won't be the same at all ! You require an image at print resolution as part of the final submission ... how can anyone create a high end envierment stil at this resolution without alot of post work ? I'm going for a VERY detailed envierment which is going to be very challenging hardwarewise so post work is the key ...
I gotta admit I'm a bit confused

This would mean that I probably need to switch to the illustration category to do what I wanna do but this is sort of against what your contests have allwais been about. Like you allwais said, 2D is very different from 3D and that is why these two catrgories have alwais been judged seperately, and to be honest, there has alwais been a BIG difference between the average quality of both categorys.

I hope I just mis-understood what you meant, please help me to better understand which way to go if I wanna go for a fully detailed 3d scene (which I dont mind animating).

I have to second zman's thoughts..I'm also considering switching to the illustration category, although I'd be using the same methods as the last challenge where I entered the 3d section.

within each milestone(concept/textures/modelling etc) I think you can upload as many images as you like.
the final image would probably be the exception

I also would like to ask for the style of the illustration. I mean, since it's science fiction novel so it MUST as realistic as possible, right?
so illustrator who not too familiar with realistic style will be at disadvantage, right? (for example cartoon style)
Or Greg don't mind whatever the style, or even abstract?

Cause, different from the last challenge, it's free and various (the style)...

i'm on my way to read the synopsis (not yet register for the challenge), but i also not too understand about "ghost" in the prolog....can also someone explain it?

I'm clicking on the link Chapter 1, chapter 2, then chapter 10 & 33 on the "about EON" 's page. And i found myself back into the prolog page again and again. Can't we read that other chapter?

nwiz25: is it 04 October 2006 - 15 January 2007?

Thank You,

We know that the material produced for this challenge should be used to promote the film.
Some of us thought to create some kind of film poster... can we put the title of film, the name of the autor, a motto, ecc like in the standard film poster or do you prefere to have a simply illustration, that you can manipulate in a second time?

I have a question about copyright: is the text below means that I can`t sell a poster of my work for example at zazzle.com without the permission of Greg Bear? :curious: I understand fully that I can`t sell the image to Coca Cola or Nike as a commercial work.

So long as it's clear that the poster is 'inspired by the book EON by Greg Bear' I don't see that being a problem.

let me clear this,
for 3d scene,
final image should be 2657 / 3636 px dimensions but 4-8sec animation should be 640*480
post effects (such as explosions, camera DOF change) are not important for final judging, the point is to show detail level and success about "3d" scene by rotating camera or flythroughs.
am i right?

Mibus (and other mods) -

I have a request/suggestion: This is the first Challenge in which there's been "required reading" as part of the homework assignment. So all of us have this one book we're reading, and there are bound to be discussion about it - not necessarily questions about the specifics of the rules, but just general chit-chat about the book. I was wondering if you might start a new thread, like this one, just for a general conversation between members about the text of the book. A book-discussion thread, as it were. If it were a movie and in the General discussion forum, Roberto would no doubt title it "Just read EON, the Reviews are Pouring In!"

People could discuss whether they liked it or not, what they felt the characters motivations were. We could talk over some of the more tricky descriptive passages - I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around how the Plasma Tube works, for example... And I'm a native English speaker! I think a thread like this would be also really beneficial to those members for whom English was not a first language (especially if they can't find a translation of 'Eon' in their native tongue.)

It's true, people can now have these conversations in they're own personal threads, but then the answers and debate will be diluted over hundreds of threads and hard to find. And you wouldn't want this thread bogging down with these questions. Having one place for all of us to have a book-discussion group would be really convenient... and also help bolster the community comeradery that always makes these Challenges so fun to begin with.

Anyhow, just an idea, hope it's something you'll like the merits of!

@nwiz25, you shouldn't have to convert. Whatever 3d app you're using should be able to render out to a TIFF format. Usually, you can choose the file type from a drop down list box when you render or save your rendering. This is where you select JPEG, BMP, TIFF, etc. Hope that helps! :)

Don't worry about that now. Final image is intended as a "FINAL, FINAL" and I dont' think yure so close to finish your entry :).
You'll need a 'FTP client' (googleize this one) to connect to cgtalk servers to upload your final entry. The system will provide to show you login, pass and other istructions.

About the "making of", maybe you want collect some high-res step of your work (just in case somone ask you for a tutorial or a 'making of') saving the steps in tiff or jpg and not screenshooting. Screenshots arent 300dpi but only 72/96.

Hello. This is my second post on the CGTalk forum.
This threat is very useful. I've found good answers for a few important questions, clearing any confusion(s). I was having many doubts after reading the challenge pages. Looking for more discussions about the subject, in order to clear what to do and not do - placed for notification.

Film trailer questions:

#However the judging will be based on overall story impact not necessarily production quality; the viewer should be left feeling “that’s awesome - I want to see more”.#
This means more quantitative then qualitative and probably because of book scenes complexity and short/limited deadline.

It's mandatory that one must design many locations to display for the film trailer?

Can it be just a single place/scene - clip like - and the story will be scrolling text (and/or voice) in the beginning of the trailer (star wars like)? ;)

One idea is to push for a clip, because from what I know and sow, a single scene in one location (clip like), done at a very good quality, where a single or a combination of genre's like action, drama or comedy in the appropriate context and a powerful picture/dialog/message, can make the user want to see more and even make him emotionally involved.
What is your feedback on this idea? I am waiting your answer very soon.

Thank you

Do I have this straight? You spooged together the entire gamut of the former challenges into a signle category, so that an artist who hand-paints a lovely stylistic/painterly from personal sketch is now being judged directly against 3d procedural textures , composited elements, and proceduraly generated "canned" terrain?

Q: Because of hardware limitations, is it ok to render a part and use it as a background, or render in "layers" and composite it all togueder later?

A: All post trickery is allowed and encouraged.

And in addition there is another ambiguous "3D only" category, but composititing and post-processing is still allowed?

I had a snarky response prepared for this, but the truth of the matter is I dont wish anyone ill-will, but Im just really disappointed in CGtalk, and the direction its been going.

Well - exactly what I thought at the first moment (but watching it from the 3D side - even though realistic hand- ie 2D- painting poses no problem for me, I prefer and enjoy to do 3D graphics lately, with as little retouching as possible).

After thinking it over - I came to the conclusion that the new direction of the Challenges might be right and that the previous division to 2D and 3D wasn't the best solution. First of all, in previous challenges there were many 2D artist who used a 3D software for the basic layout and then worked on it in the Photoshop. On the other hand, some 3D artists used to "fake" some parts of the scene (mainly clouds, landscapes) by preparing them by 2D "handwork" or even by manipulating photographs. So the division line became very blurred. Not to mention that there are some excellent programs on the today's 3D market that allow the user to paint directly over a 3D model (like Bodypaint 3D etc.) - thus still adding to the "confusion".

While it is clear to everyone that a 3D model of Japanese chopsticks, composited in a large photograph or 2D illustration of a Japanese restaurant can not bi considered a "3D illustration" (and vice versa), the exact division line between the two techniques are getting more and more blurred - and many well-known illustrators and mate painters are using a combination of whatever technique it takes (compositing 2D, 3D and photos) to achieve the final goal.

I don't see it as a bad approach, especially if we are talking about a professional (commercial) project. When it comes to competitions, the story is slightly different. I'll cite here from the Chalenge FAQ:

Q: Can I use Poser, Daz 3D or pre-fabricated models?

A: No. The purpose of the "Challenge" is to challenge artists in creating original concepts and characters. Where's the challenge in using pre-fabricated characters as main subjects?

The (almost:) ) same question could be posed here: where's the challenge in using hand-painted (or even photographed) clouds (people, anything...) in a 3D competiton project? And where's the challenge in using 3D software to get correct perspective, shadows or highlights in a 2D competition project? In both cases we're talking about sort of "faking" or using a "shortcut" . Very useful in commercial work - but in a competition, can their authors be honestly judged against the ones, who are sticking with a technique?

I think the answer is: yes, they can - if the real goal of a competition is recruiting people for industry. And that's exactly what to seems to be the goal of this challenge and of the CG Society in general. No matter how it might make me or you sick, it is their policy and goal (and however it might seem hard to believe, there are people who actually want to be recruited by the industry!!! :) ). They own the site and they are organizing the competitions. If you and me don't like it, we are free not to participate or to organize competitions of our own.

Just my humble opinion.

I'm still unsure and confused myself, whether I should join a 3D illustration or a 3D Scene category... I think the only difference is that the final product in the latter category must be animatable - and all the "2D faking" done at the level of textures, so that it follows the animation - without the need to apply separate fakes at every single frame. I read all the explanations by the Forum leaders and all of the competition instructions but it is still not very clear.

Yes. As Lovas deftly pointed out, the line between 2D and 3D has been getting increasingly blurred - one of the most frequently asked questions in previous challenges was always "is [x] 2D or 3D?". Now, there's no question - it's an illustration. Because of 3D's natural ability to make something with depth, we've made a new category just for 3D. It's pretty much a win-win!

And in addition there is another ambiguous "3D only" category, but composititing and post-processing is still allowed?

That was a mis-wording in the FAQ. Post-trickery is not encouraged for the 3D Model category, since what we're really after is a demonstration of your ability to make a nice model. I've updated the FAQ to clarify it a bit.

Hello all, nice to see an another challenge here... i did'nt read yet this book, but it seems really good...anyway i'm really confused by the new "form" of the challenge...for the new style of entry and for the copyright method... i would like to be as clear as possible, i can understand we can't use image for commercial without permission of Greg, but as our work can be use for inspiration for him, i would like to know, how about see my or some other participants original ship or design in a "possible" future blokbuster movie....? Are we protected about that?
I like the cgsociety challenge, and i've participated at 3 of them... but this time i'm really confused, it seems to be some great challenge, and then some producer look all the good ideas and mix all of that in a future movie.... in this case, how the copyright will work?
I really want to be as original as possible, like the all participants, and i don't really want to see some of my ideas in a future movie, without my permission, i know it will be better in quality doing by a great FX Society, but the thing i liked in CGsociety it was to protect, the work but also the idea behind the technical work....
I understand about not using my work, my final image or video. But how about using the concept or the style behind my image?

I'm sure that CGsociety have found a solution about that but i want to know it clearly, 'cause it's one things that make me hesitate to entry this challenge...

Thanks!

Regarding the Illustration category:

Should we think like "Hmm, that one moment in the book I found to be the most inspiring one and it would be so cool to communicate the mood and the look of it by illustrating it!"

Or should we rather think like "If I had to create a movie poster, what would catch the bypasser's attention the most, so he gets eager to see the movie."

The point is I am not sure if we are supposed to think in a commercial way about how the movie would be best sold to an audience or if we should just pick a scene from the book, which inspired us most, and then illustrate it as good as we can focusing on the mood and character.

1)It's a team prize, so the winning team has to split the prizes up. I'd suggest a maximum of four people in a team so it's easy to divide stuff :)

1. so if there's only one person working on it, they can take all 4?! or just one? i assume its only one...

2. how do we submit videos (.avi, .wmv, etc.) to the trailer challenge if theres a maximum of 150 kb?
because i just made a test animation and would like to upload it.

Could anybody describe what "Foley pass" means - just don´t understand this english word :banghead:

sorry, i can only answer this one.

foley: of or pertaining to motion-picture sound effects or soundtracks

I read through the FAQ but didn't see the answer to this question.

The challenge page states that the trailer can be in either 3D or live action. Does that mean 2D animation is not an option for that category? e.g. if someone did a trailer using only Mirage for visuals, would that not be allowed?

Just checking.

Ah, great. Thanx a million! I actually did search at wikipedia and found something like this as well.
"Foley sound effects are sounds that synchronize on screen, and require the expertise of a foley artist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foley_artist) to properly record. Footsteps, the movement of hand props, and the rustling of cloth are common foley units"

2D anim is fine for the Trailer. Storyboards are even OK :)

Want to post your WIPs elsewhere too? Go for it!

The 3D challenge is *supposed* to be an output from your renderer, so compositing really isn't allowed. If you want to do post-effects, you're probably more interested in the Illustration category.

If a one-person "team" wins the Trailer category, they still get 4x everything. But if a 16-person team wins, they still get 4x, *not* 16x.

Regarding Illustration vs. Poster - it's totally up to you. We're expecting both to be entered.

I have a some questions

A) I´m Sorry, I didn't get this right, is it ok to put the title in the illustration? is it encouraged? is it going to affect the judges decision? which would be best to submitt?

B) does the amount of WIP posts and critique is going to count? is there a minimum?

C) i think someone asked this but it wasn't that clear to me, can i post my different preliminary sketches? (lets say i haven't decided which part of the book i'm going to illustrate) or just focus on the WIP of the final image.

D) Should i focus on a realistic representation? or can i do a more abstract, concept based poster?

thanks in advance!

mitchelhunt: You use the CGChallenge Uploader. The video isn't limited to 150kb.

CG Alx: a) It's OK. Anything other than that is personal taste, and I can't comment on.

b) Not directly. You must submit at least one WIP per category. Judges will be able to see your community interaction, so it may indirectly affect their decision.

c) Yep.

d) Either.

M31: Yes, the judging on the 3D Scene (/ model) category will be less story-based and more based on technical excellence.

I'm bit confused here. Less story based? EON instructions clearly say say: "Story is the primary component that will be awarded highest weighting in all judging. The emotive impact and implication of “story behind the image” is the aspect that is most important. Your work must capture the imagination of the viewer and draw them in without relying on any prior knowledge of the story."

This is official contest so you can't use copyrighted music without paying royalties to the artist. Original soundtrack is always a cool thing but if you are unable to produce one you can always use free music. There is lot of free music out there.

forgive me if someone has already asked this but i am teaming up with some friends for this challenge and we were wondering if we really HAVE to stick to the book (both visually and as an idea)...

Can we base our trailer concept more on the subtitle (worlds within worlds) or stick to what the book and main title let us create?... I am asking this because we wanted to divert from the book a bit and dont know if that is within regulations...

Thanks in advance....

10-19-2006, 06:32 PM
This is just my guess (i.e. I don't work here) but it seems like you can do something not book-related, but you'll be going up against people who will be doing something book related. As the Challenge is specifically about doing something from the book and will be judged by the book's author, I wouldn't expect you to do well in the judging if you ignored the theme. But it still could be a fun learning experience and a chance to work with people to complete a finished trailer, which has value all by itself.

Hey I was hoping that someone might be able to help me out here. I just downloaded the cguploader, a flv encoder. I did all the stuff followed the instructions on the help page etc..

When I try to upload a video it says that it cannot upload the file because this option is only available to CGSociety Members.

It said that all CGTalk and CGSociety members are eligible to enter the competition, but if CGTalk members can't upload their videos how can they compete in the competition? Especially the trailer or 3D Scene catergory.

Did I misunderstand something or do something wrong?
If so how can I upload them?

I have already read the entire faqs thread and uploader help page.

If there is no other way for me to upload the video can I link to an external site as a last option?

Thankyou.

A few questions for the trailer category:

1) For the music, I'm assuming using loops is okay? i.e. if I use Adobe Audition or ACID or Garage Band or whatever, and use their royalty free loops to put together something, I'm working under the impression that this will count as an original composition? Or do I have to actually haul my guitar up to the microphone and pluck out something (or even worse, do I have to build my own instruments from scratch first :) ; just joking).

2) Is the "Scratch Voice Track" supposed to be an audio only upload, or is it set to the edited storyboards (i.e. a lecia reel or animatic)?

3) Same for the "Initial SFX and Music"? And "Foley pass and final audio edit"?

4) Total newbee question here: what's the difference between a "Colored story board" and a "Colortimed and finished storyboard" (I mean, I understand color-timing as it relates to video, but I'm not sure how it works for a drawn storyboard)?

Mibus
10-23-2006, 12:31 AM
js3d: No, just upload a new one.

fifty3dragons: Add-on time for credits is OK, but don't overdo it.

1) Loops should be fine.

2 & 3) I'd put it to whatever video you have at the time

4) It's just an extra step where you can tint the colours, and finish up the audio. (You can think of typical DVD 'deleted scenes' that don't look right, and don't sound quite right either - this is the "next step" from there).

For all the people with uploader issues, are you all using the CGUploader or the CGChallenge Uploader? It's a different download... (You can check in the title of the app when you run it).

question about sound:

1. Can I compose my background music using somekind of software based on samples? or maybe I can use someone's orginal music to remix it in that kind of software?

2. I guess there is no limitation for using life recorded sounds (f.e. hitting the wall with my head) for sfx.

3.If I ask someone to perform 90s orginal soundtrack to my trailer, is it all right if I just list him (or her ) in my cast crew (another example: Orginal Sound track by Vesperios aka "Mad Violin") along with life actors and voice actors? or he (or her! -anyone? ;) ) must be CGMember and my team member?

4. Personally I can't imagine trailer without music ,and since we are all painters or modellers... or animators -not musicians that makes this challenge extremally hard! I must find my notes from highschool , i remeber I played a little on guitar that time...

Hi, I've a simple question.
Now I'm working in a office for an university unpaid work experience.
I use cinema 4D every day and in the downtime I model my scene.
I can use the licence of the program of the office for doing my scene?...because for the moment I haven't my personal licence...I hope to win it!!!:) :) :)

Lovas
11-12-2006, 12:29 PM
This is not an "official" answer - but I think you should ask the boss in the office for permission. If he/she agrees, then it is ok. Authorship of a work is not connected to who owns the tools. And if you are using a legally acquired and licenced copy (i.e. "seat") of the program, while it's not being used by the other employees in the office, I don't see why it should be wrong.

(Unless you're employed in the office on regular basis and use the tool during your official working hours - in such a case authorship goes to the office.)

Nevertheless, we better wait for Mibus to confirm this...

kodo

Lovas thanks of the help!
However I follow your advice, I wait the confirmation of Mibus!

Mibus
11-12-2006, 11:21 PM
There are actually three issues at play:

Licensing
Ownership
Permission

Licensing is fine - the office has bought the app (presumably). The ownership you'll have to check with your boss - if I make something on work time, work owns it (not me). I'd have to make it "off the clock", so to speak. The third point is permission - you need to make sure your boss is OK with it!

It should only take a 30 second chat with your boss to get the permission and make sure it won't be considered owned by the company.

You have to get the challenge uploader, the Portfolio one won't work. The file you download isn't a ZIP, it's a JAR file - make sure the filename is right. Then, make sure Java is installed, and you should be able to double-click the JAR file to launch it.

So once I downloaded it, I manually changed the file extension and forced it to open with java instead. Worked great that way and everything should be good for now on. I'm not sure why my winzip was set to open jar files! Thanks Mibus for your direction. Now I can get back to doing the challenge! :)

I'm sorry if this has already been asked, I didn't see it. It's probably an obvious question, but I thought I would ask.

I've read all the way through the FAQs and can't find a few questions about composition of the 3D scene category...

First -
Are captions allowed? Two kinds..
- I'm thinking of using both a bubble of words, ie the comic book thing where someone says something
- And a Letter or Book in the composition where the words are readable, ie you could see the open novel of Tom Sawyer and read the printing date of 1174
Second -
Is a collage effect allowed? aslo Two kinds...
- the picture I turn in has several things in it at the same time, ie the earth with the stone in orbit on the top left and Patricia entering the 7th chamber on the bottom left, and just for fun maybe a snap shot of boojum on the right... they would all have their respective 3Dness and turn for the 4-8 sec anim
- or a zooming effect to show the stone in orbit and in the same image a close up of Patricia on the edge of the first chamber
These are very important for my concept so please reply as soon as possible

Thank you,
Aaron Bergquist

p.s. I would also like to know the above question about the use of a celebrity's identity, I would like to use Maria Menounous as Patricia

JamesMK

So, I fired up the ChallengeUploader today just to check it out, and it seems that for the 3D Model section, there is no category for the video upload to be found in the dropdown box... There's options for everything else, but the video file browse button remains grayed out except for the various applicable Trailer bits.

Thus, how/when will it be possible for participants in the 3D Model category to upload their .flv's? Or did I simply get a messed up installation?

Further, just to be clear, reading that compositing is discouraged in the 3D Model category is confusing - I'm hoping that you mean "compositing 3D with non-3D stuff is discouraged", because surely we're allowed to split our renders up in different passes and layers for compositing/assembly? It would be kinda nasty and counter-productive otherwise :D

I also use Photoshop to create a finished image on most occations. I have a traditional art background. A B.A. in fine art. (Oils, pen/ink, watercolor, pencil ... etc.) I don't have access to live models. I feel ... well. left out. Is this just for the big guys with 3d Max and model from scratch capabilities? Is this what the site is all about? I don't mean to sound defensive ... honest. but it's so disapointing. The finished works I generally do don't "Look" like Poser (I never use the models "out of the box", I always morph or adjust them to be individual) or Bryce. They are guides as I don't have photos or models and as a visually impaired artist I can see them better ... IF 2d work is allowed why can't I use the tools of Poser to help create the 2d image? Thank you for your time and consideration in this question. I'm just trying to work towards being a professional illustrator. (Not a modeler).

With sincere apologies for my "rant".

Boni

P.S. I did notice that another enterent used Vicky 3 as a base model for his character study for the contest ... so I am very confused now.

JamesMK: I've put up a new ChallengeUploader (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/eon/challengeuploader.jar) that should fix it.

bonim: The main drive for the challenges is to improve and round out an artist's skills, with a focus on the types of artists that are predominant here - we will be moving to allowing more "pre-made" stuff in the future, but it's not official yet.

Mobis,
Thank you so much for your response. This gives me great hope that my pieces will eventually be a quality for this wonderful organization. I do understand the focus, but knowing that the renderers out here that use both 3d and 2d to make their final work without making their models from scratch will have a place here is welcoming indeed. Again. Thank you.

This is in response to Bonim's post...I'm not trying to be mean and I'm really sorry if this sounds so, but isn't using premade models for a challenge as bad as buying a frozen dinner and entering it in a cooking contest?

bonim

Mr. Hunt,
I do understand your concern, and I do respect the wonderful work of the 3d modelers (I took a course in Lightwave and I have Animation: Master) But this challenge is open to 2d work as well. You see, that is my point. The challenge wasn't open for 3d modelers alone, or 3d artists alone. It was open to the CG community. We all have our strengths and weaknesses.
Respectfully Yours
Boni

P.S. Mr. Hunt I viewed your gallery and you do fantastic models ... especially in blender and as a new modeler, if I understand. The lighting was wonderful and I liked the basic simplicity of the teacup. Oh .... what a treat the cookies were. I respect your work greatly.

bonim - In a previous post you mentioned that models were not available to you, if you go to CG talk, then anatomy area, then workshops link you will find there are models that will pose via request . There is everything you need on this site to do an original cg painting,3d rendering, or learn to do one. One of the reasons I love this site is they stress originality. I, personally have struggled with my own Eon entry, attempting to paint my first human subject. If I had available to me the use of Poser , Bryce and they were allowed it would not make me push myself to create, learn and better any skills I may have. When you work traditionally pre-made people and things are generally not available, painting on the pc is the same as painting traditionally, except for lack of messy paint, chalk , etc. I think if you challenge yourself painting on the pc you will find it very satisfying and come to love it and appreciate all the work that goes into creating a piece starting from a line drawing or concept and building it pixel by pixel. I hope this post does not sound disrespectful , I just want you to explore the whole site and see what is available and be as amazed as I am by the help and learning oportunities that are available here and to see how willingly the experts help out.

I really need an answer for these, Thanks!

I've read all the way through the FAQs and can't find a few questions about composition of the 3D scene category...

First -Are captions allowed? Two kinds..
- I'm thinking of using both a bubble of words, ie the comic book thing where someone says something
- And a Letter or Book in the composition where the words are readable, ie you could see the open novel of Tom Sawyer and read the printing date of 1174

Second -Is a collage effect allowed? aslo Two kinds...

Thank you,Aaron Bergquist

p.s. I would also like to know the above question about the use of a celebrity's identity, I would like to use Maria Menounous as Patricia

Mibus
12-14-2006, 10:14 PM
Aaron, the captions and collages you've suggested sound fine. I would probably stay away from using a celebrity's likeness, I'm not quite sure of the legal ramifications. (Also, you want to be original! Why copy something, even if it's someone real's face :))

I hear you ... and you have seen what I've done with traditional models and references. I never ment to use Poser as a cheat ... but as a "photo" reference then create the final image on my own. With my hopeful knowledge of anatomy, I would fix the flaws in the Poser models. Even the highest end models aren't "perfect" in Maya or 3d Max ... At least that is my goals and the reason I baught the program in the first place. Let me know if you find and can use the books I suggested in the Anatomy forums. :)

Isnt this the quietest CGChallenge ever?

walrus
12-26-2006, 03:04 PM
I dunno about ever, but it certainly seems like the quietest one in many years. Certainly not as boisterous (or fun) as the last several. With less than 3 weeks to go, it'll be interesting to see how many final entries there will be compared to last time.

I suspect that because the "price of admission" this time 'round was reading an entire novel, that turned some people off because the couldn't just start working on something right away and there was less early momentum. Others I know read the book and just didn't feel inspired. And I think some like the freedom of being able to do any kind of entry: Fantasy, classical, humor... (I greatly miss doing the funny pieces. No matter how well this one goes for me, this won't be going in my portfolio, which is more silly stuff.) And lastly, I think some could have been turned off by the rights-to-the-image addendums in the rules.

As much as this is a nice change (and I do love Greg Bear's work,) I hope we'll get back to doing Challenges in the former open-ended style next time around. Any plans that far out, Robert?

cheers,

-mike

Youre right....im not sure about ever...too..been here for only a few CGchallenges.

I have thought of the factors that youve pointed out before and i do indeed think that those are the reason behind little participation in this one.

Personally I in this challenge because I like the challenge of visualising something that has never been visualised before...or maybe not as much as the others. I like to play Peter Jackson or Alan Lee with the LOTR. The fun of seeing these thing materialise is a joy...if ever im gonna finish that is.

Personally i think that particularly when it comes to doing something extra in a CGchallenge, extra time should be given for the participant to be able to digest the material. I have not finished the book yet so my illustration would be not as deep (if i can execute it well enough) as someone who finished the book (just a point not an excuse :D).

I find previous CGChallenges to be much more diverse and the theme is quite unversal. Like what you have said, mike.
But the judging i think can be a pain. For Eon, i think its gonna be pretty straight forward..(just a minions' two cents).

Well see in 3 weeks! :)

Well, in all fairness, I think they did add in extra time. The last Challenge was 3 months, this one is 3 and a half. And that's up from 2 or 2-and-a-half when I first started doing the challenges (if memory serves, which it may not.) But I'm pretty certain that this is the longest Challenge in a while.

but I do agree with you about previous Challenges being more open to our own personal world-building and imagination.

If things haven't changed since the last time around... the FTP is "blind" so to speak, so even if your upload was successful, you won't actually be able to see your file in the server-end of your FTP application. But if it reports that the transfer was successful, you can probably rest assured that it was.

I've uploaded my tiff via FTP as required, in theory the upload went well, but the thumbnail of the uploaded image looked strange, I clicked to see it better, and it seems my image was received like this:

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o277/Thaldir/EonFinal.jpg
One strip was cut from the right side and pasted on the left...I tried refreshing and uploading using a different client (the first one was Smart FTP, the second one AceFTP 3 Pro) but the thumb doesn't change and I've no way to know if it's the image that remains the same or simply the thumbnail that doesn't refresh.
Can anyone help? I would *really* hate to be disqualified because of FTP problems...

Reinaldo: Just submit any vaguely appropriate image. Maybe one of the later concept images?

alvin-cgi: http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/eon/instructions.php
Video material must be submitted in 4:3 aspect with a maximum resolution of 640 x 480. If you wish to create 16:9 or other wide format films then you will need to letterbox them into the 4:3 format.

As for the next challenge, no plans have yet been decided on. You can feel free to email me any feedback you have on why you have / haven't joined in, how you feel about this challenge compared to previous challenges - in both theme and category changes.

hey all,

little question,
i was planned to make the early deadline, and now i have it almost finished. But since the extended deadline, i have the ability to redo the background and add some detail to the foreground to make it a little bit better (mostly refining the bump-map and adding small details like rocks and dirt and such).

Now the problem is, do i need to rerender the foreground for the animation with the tweeked detail?

It might not be too obvious, but the render already took a huge long time to render. I'll already need my time to render the high res 7.5k image and the new background for the animation which is 192 frames.

Cheers

ZhuLi: You can try it and see if it works, I haven't tested it specifically.

Nothingness: Surely you can render just the new stuff and composite it over the old?

Nothingness
01-14-2007, 11:01 PM
Hey Mibus,

i can render the new small details as a new layer, but when i redo bump maps i got to render a lot more.

Unless the animation doens't need to be at a high quality/sampling ?

at the moment i'm rendering at 1000*666 pixels (gonna scale the final one) at a sampling of min and max 2 to avoid flicker when playing. Scaling this res down gives another sort of oversampling.
(i know i'm nuts rendering it so high, but it's the way i am. I'm trying a 7,5k render of the still cause a 10k makes my app crash)

cheers

BIG DOUBT about 3d scene category.

Hi Mibus, I just finished my final still for this category (at least first try for that). I tried to upload final image but I was told by the system that there is no final image for 3d scene category!

1. That means that I wasted 100hours for rendering my stuff in 5000px x 2000px ?

2. That means that I wasted whole day of postproduction :) ? as with the animation I won't be able to do all "tricks", only some of them. But of course I will try to make it as close to my final still as possible.

3. Is there a border for postproduction here? for differences betwean animation and still? Perhaps I'm in the wrong category :) but on the other hand almoust everything is in 3d and is renderable... Only final mood and touch is postproduction.

4. does it mean that only (or mostly) the animation is being juried here?

Mibus
01-15-2007, 05:25 AM
1. I guess. Where did you read that you needed a full-res image? I'll have to get it fixed! You can at least downsample it to have a nice crisp "final image" JPEG, or use it on your portfolio.

2. Your still image will still get shown, alot!

3. Not really, but if you do too much it might look odd (going from the still to the animated render)

4. No, judges have access to everything about your entry.

arturro

Thanks Mibus, Final Render sound similar to Final Image that is why I made it 300dpi and quite big :)

Of course this time is not wasted, I just wrote it in the context of time left and work to bo done on animation.

One question/ask though... is it possible that in 3d scene category final render had smaller kb limit? so that the quality of it can be better? For example I wanted to show 1280 wide (as wide as possible) but there is no way to make it 150kb with nice quiality.

best wishes
Artur

edit:
or perhaps make for 3d scene category similar upload of final still image, for example with restrictions of 1280x1024 but with no kb limit (or 1600x1200 or whatever). New submited final would rewrite last submietted one - as it is in illustration.

quick question: I uploaded my .tif file and wondering where I can view it to check and see if it uploaded ok. I am on dial up so takes forever and a day to upload a huge file and prefer to be able to check and make sure it went through ok. Thanks :)

I copied the URL of the page when I did my ftp upload, but can't seem able to view the image I uploaded. A little more detail on how to get there maybe?

edit: hmm ok I see what you said now, I guess maybe my upload didn't go through. *curses my slow dial up connection and the lack of any other connection available in my area

ok I uploaded again, and when I hit refresh to view the image I get the following message, my ftp program says transfer successful and complete so it is there somewhere, I just don't know how to view it I guess.

You have not yet uploaded a final image for this challenge

I was also under the impression that a Print res still image was part of the requirements for 3D Scene... no matter, I usually make these kind of images hi-res anyway. My Video turned out alot darker than I thought it would tho.

Oh men!! I think instructions in eon main page are very misleading! I thought the same as many other people I had to make illustration (300 dpi hi res) + animation.

Illustration:
This can be created with any tools you like - 2D & 3D.
.....

and

3D Scene:
Your final entry requires an illustration plus a 4 - 8 second animation of your completed scene (not just a model). (...)

but my main question is :
• Final Render - 4 seconds - JPG (online) &
• 4-8 Second Animation (via CGUploader)

I have to upload 4 second animation someware on the web and post a link?? ( in any format?? )
can it be youtube f.e.?
can final render animation (online) and 4-8 second animation (via CGUploader) be the same video??

What's the difference between upload via cguploader and final render (especially when those animations differ)??

Thanks!

If you can point out something in particular that's misleading, I can change it. It's not anybody's intention to mislead you :)

A really good example! The "4 seconds" shouldn't be there, I've removed it from the live copy. You need to supply a final render (still) JPEG, and a 4-8 second animation through CGUploader. You do not need to upload two animations :)

I read this sentances

Illustration:
This can be created with any tools you like - 2D & 3D.

3D Scene:
Your final entry requires an illustration plus a 4 - 8 second

And I understand it this way : make an illustration (with all it's milestones- hi res print TIF etc) + make animation.
Maybe placing so close two words of "illustration" in so differend meaning is unfortunate . I guess this wasn't only my problem so I point it out

Thanks

OK, I can see how that could be confusing. I've changed it to say "still image" instead of "illustration".

Thanks!
