zer05um 01-23-2007, 08:10 AM 2D anim is fine for the Trailer. Storyboards are even OK :)
Want to post your WIPs elsewhere too? Go for it!
The 3D challenge is *supposed* to be an output from your renderer, so compositing really isn't allowed. If you want to do post-effects, you're probably more interested in the Illustration category.
If a one-person "team" wins the Trailer category, they still get 4x everything. But if a 16-person team wins, they still get 4x, *not* 16x.
Regarding Illustration vs. Poster - it's totally up to you. We're expecting both to be entered.
Hi there Mibus,
Looks like I completely misunderstood the instructions when I started this and I SHOULD have been in the illustration section, not the 3D, since the only tool I have to use is Vue and there's no way I can match the modelling of other systems. I've been enjoying making the city etc, but I know where my limits are.
To that end, how can I change category? I've seen a number of others ask this, but I haven't seen a response yet, or if there has been one I've been blind and missed it.
Sorry if this is a repeat...

Since all of the WIP categories are different, there's no way to automatically change categories. Just post a note in your thread explaining what you're doing, then enter the competition again in the correct category. Re-post at least one image per milestone, upload a final image, and you should be fine :)

Hey, I've uploaded my final, the transfer was succesfull, also no error on the page I've got the ftp, but I can't see any image...I keep hiting refresh...how long does it take to be processed?
I can only see the following text under Image status:
"If this image is not correct, try the "Refresh Image" button below. If that does not work, try uploading it again!"

Hey Mibus,
I have been trying to upload my video for the 3d model challenge . I am using the Challenge uploader but when I hit the upload button to upload the flv file nothing happens . The status bar remains at 0%. I couldn't find a 3d model Video category in the category section, could this be causing the problem.
Any info on this.

Mibus,
I have another question, I did get the video uploaded to the 3d challenge section but the video gets enlarged. I did the video at 400x300 but when it gets uploaded , the video that you see is the larger 640x480. This makes the video look very poor, in the guidelines I think it says the video size can range from 320x240 to 640x480 . Is the larger 640x480 the only size that we can upload, I didn't see an area where we can select the size of the video.
When I play the video in the standalone flv player it plays at the correct size. If you can give me any advise on how to correct this it would be appreciated.

Ok so nothing works for me...i've wasted the whole day trying to make the thumbnail appear...nothing....am I gonna miss this challenge because of server issue? Seems noone is here to help.
The tif is rgb, no other channels, no compression, inside a ZIP made with winzip....im out of ideas....help me out here, im going nuts
May be a silly question, but...
Where the making-off article should go? Should it be a regular post on the entry thread, or there is an special place where it should be uploaded? I am talking about Illustration category.
I tryed to search this thread, and all EON related places on cgtalk, but couldn't find an answer...
Thaldir

I might be wrong on this, but as I interpreted it, the making-of article is a post-judging requirement for the winners and runner-ups, not a step of the contest proper...
IMO, if someone wins a prize, that someone must submit a making-of article (so better have it ready, just in case) but it is not required from all the contestants, and as such, no place to upload it.
At least, that is how I read this:
All winners are required to write 'making of' articles accompanied with high-resolution Work In Progress stills, to be eligible for prizes.
Please, correct me if I have it wrong.
Suirebit
01-28-2007, 03:23 PM
Yes, only the winners must write that, after the competition ends.
I've managed to get my thumb finaly! :D I don't know what I did, but it worked somewhow lol
YAY :D
Uh, no writing :scream:!
Thanks for help, guys!
And another silly question...
I got my final FTP'ed, thumbnail appeared correctly, and when I click on it I get a bigger image. But the one that opens from the thumbnail is way much smaller resolution than the one I uploaded.
My guess is that it shows downsized version of the high res file - just to check if things got through correctly, but real high res is actually the one that's laying on the server. And it's done with purpose to reduce amount of traffic to server.
So I don't have to worry - my high res IS actually there.
Is it correct?
Thaldir

Yes, it is! :)
Happy to hear that your problem was solved as well, Suirebit.

thats diferent for the resolution im using for the test 720*486 .. i want to increase that proportionally as well as the aspect raio mentioned above.
ok ive been reading the faq and i notice some of the challengers for 3d category use 300 dpi for the final image i would like to know if that necessary o should i use 72 dpi instead or wich will be better for the 3d category?
ill continue reading the faq ..

OK...:) I was under the impression that a Print res still image was part of the requirements for 3D Scene... has instructions changed?
I think I am misunderstood some of the instructions when I started this... did I? I have just found out when I tried to upload final hi res but the system said that there is no final image for 3d scene category! I have spent(concentrate) most of my time for rendering Hi Res still, I won't call it wasted just that I thought main focus is 3D still and video only to support your 3D illustration - "...anything that demonstrates a 3D nature of the work... " Now I think the main focus is video not still image... am I right?

Can I use quotes from the book in my story background (3d scene description) ?

Alvin-cgi and I seem to be in the same boat on this one. I spent much of the last two days working on a print resolution render, also rendering the animation which seems to have been wrecked by the conversion to .flv.
What really galls is that at submission was the only time I found that a max of 1280x1024 was acceptable for the image. I could find that little tid-bit nowhere else.
Oh well. No time left to re-render the anim. It takes more trime than I have left.

just want to confirm, so the 3dstill category must submit 1024x1280 at 150K Final image
plus the 4 sec animation maximum of 640 x 480 via cguploader?
one more question, is it alright to render my scene (animation) without the hair?

Yes, within reason.
chandro: Yes, if you must. The judges will be shown both the image and the video.
Do we need to uploade WIP here for each of them??
You must have at least a still image for each milestone. You must have a FLV uploaded as a 'Final Image' milestone.
I have re-read the instructions page about the final image; the term 'Final Image' is used somewhat loosely to refer to either the JPEG or the TIFF final image. I will get that cleared up for the next challenge.

Hi Mibus. I'm in the process of trying to get everything rendered for my entry in the 3d scene category. I was wondering. How important is having a background image in this category. I didn't have enough time to paint up a matte to use as a background. It is my understanding that this would be considered post work so I think it is ok to submit what I have. Correct me if I'm wrong. It's been very confusing with this new 3d scene category. It seems that the majority, if not all, entrants in the 3d scene category have used post work so I am very confused. Would those with no post work be at a disadvantage? I need to know asap so that I can decide whether or not to try to make the deadline. Also, is the final still image supposed to be a minimum of 640 x 480, or should it be larger?

Hi I had the wind knocked out of me by the unfortunate coincidence of losing both my laptop and
the slowdown in internet access caused by the undersea cable loss.So Looks like I have to give this
competition a miss.:).I had intended to to email this to leonard as feedback but found the forum a more
suitable location to put in my opinions on the competition.First I apologize for what was perceived
as unfortunate flooding.
The issue I wish to explore here is simply this:.As you may be well aware movie production occurs with teams feeding data to and from one another.
One team produces models another team sets them up and still another team produces the color keys and animations.
The nature of this competition is that the teams are usually individuals or small teams of 2 and 3 working independantly within the limited time framework.Because as you make it very clearly ,drawing on each others works outside your own team is frowned upon and even constitutes stealing ,nobody does that .Everyone is working from scratch.I am more
interested in reproducing the feel of working in an actual movie production house where you have artists doing the story books ,still others doing the models and still others doing the illustrations and the teams specialize and leverage on one another competitively.
If a formal system of acknowledgement is set up and copyright sharing is enforced ,the issues of stealing disappear.
Productivity is higher and the quality rises and the time commitment of each person is defined. I have observed may good entries go uncompleted and good artists withdrawing because of work commitments. This may not be an issue in the illustration category but is definitely an issue in the animation category.I therefore propose a change in the way competitions using movie studio or author intellectual property be held.
Basically the end product is an animation .period.In order to get
there ,you go through the process of story boarding ,producing models ,compositing the models and finally producing the resulting animation. The caveat here is that different artists involved in different steps of the process have no leeway in choosing what
to do .They must get their input only from the
earlier steps in the process. For example modelers cannot roll their own models ,they must draw on only the storyboard sketches for inspiration.Competition is judged only on the final animation with acknowledgement placed in the animation for storyboard artists, modelers and background artist whose work gets used in the final animation. This is the issue that I wish to explore.Essentially how the competition can be better and how more can be done in the amount of time available.
Knowing Leonard's success with organizing 3D conventions ,it is not a difficult matter to alter the php to create
this more assembly line approach to the competition.I know this sounds crass but animation as it is currently produced
is very labor and effort intensive and it makes sense to pool efforts where possible.
Also in the early in the competition Greg made a silly mistake as one of the judges in commenting on some of the entries.
If you do not believe me just do a search on his comments.I realized thereon that what was needed was a system of categorizing
the various entries and came up with the following categories
category one:
Strong/Beautiful Foreground Potraits with EON elements in the background.
Movie Posters theme.
Characters in dramatic poses.
Characters have detailed skin, muscle and skeletal structures.Characters may wear detailed armor.
Very Detailed Vehicle showed prominently together with characters. The Focus is Character.
category two:
massive architectures, detailed cityscapes, plasma tubes, huge eon elements viewed in the distance in the style of grand space opera with miniscule, faceless, diminutive men ,women and all terrain machines reacting and responding to the environment.Archictectural elements include buildings, pylons, aqueducts, railways station, arches and airports as well as roads. The Focus is Architecture.Huge Explosions may be present.
category three:
air ,sea atmosperics featuring natural elements of islands, skies blend into a grand sense of scale.Includes Tree elements.Gaia oriented.Mountain views and Spectacular chamber vistas. Sky atmospherics.Rivers curve and bend and disappear in the distance.Organic and Crystalline Inorganic natural forms.Terrain
and Environment is the Focus and site of adventure.Open Pit Mines abound.Mining Machinery act as props.
category four:
party scene with the character interacting and gossiping
Social Parties gathered at gate opening or onboard a ship or library viewing
category five:
wonderful sense of humor even black humor and caricature
category six:
action packed conflict with eon elements in the backdrop and lots of machines, ships, cities and soldiers.battlefield atmospherics
category seven:
entire cities, planetary bodies, asteroids, weather systems, gates, singularities, flawships and space vehicles in awe inspiring perspectives with large scale explosions.Ships have beautiful designs.Space/Aerospace Atmospherics. The Focus is on Flight.Very Detailed Flight Vehicle showed prominently with Pilots dressed for flight.
category eight:
detailed explanatory tutorials
Having the categories aid the judges Greg and Brin in deciding who to lookout for in judging the competition.
Perhaps a mysql database could be setup in future competitions to help the judges to track the entries and may prompt
calls for submissions in areas that are lacking?
Finally Best wishes to greg and brin and the upcoming winners of the eon competition.

I tried the Riva encoder, it took a 200 frame 640 x 480 Quicktime down to about 1.6 megabytes... the image quality suffered quite a bit. I plan to try the Flash 8 video encoder tonight, it appeared to maintain image quality in the high detail areas of the image a bit better. Here's a screenshot of the settings I used- 1600 bit rate, 30 fps, 640 x 480 output, no audio.

24 HOURS TO GO
taavi: You only need to upload a print-res image for the Illustration category, not the 3D Scene or Trailer categories. You still need to upload a final JPEG image (in the 'Submit Entry' page rather than the 'Submit Final Image' page).
Jedi-Juice: The emphasis is on the model, so don't worry. You should upload a JPEG of a decent resolution (but not print-res) along with your FLV. You can do both at once through the CGChallenge Uploader.
Everybody please ensure that your entries are complete and uploaded well before the end of the challenge.

I went to the "submit image" page link and it said the challenge was over and no more submissions etc. It also said you can check out some of the entries , so I clicked the link and went looking for my entry.
It seems only the illustration challenge entries are visible , the 3d and trailer entries aren't visible . Anyone else seeing or not seeing this.:)

An addition to my last post. I went to look at some of the illustration entries at the link mentioned in my above post but I could only look at the thumbnail images. When I clicked the thumbnail image to see the larger image nothing happened.
I am sure you will get the bugs worked out. I just wanted to make sure my entry was accepted. Come to think of it , it would be harder to validate what 3d and trailer entries completed all the tasks.
Correction to my statement here . It just took a long time to load one of the illustration images.

Well if this challenge is anything like previous one ftp is open for something like hour after deadline - so everyone should be able to upload their images. My last challenge there was something wrong with zip file and i had to upload it again 30min after deadline and it was accepted without any problems... so stay cool people :buttrock:

FTP is still open, and will probably be open for 12-24 hours. Any of you having FTP trouble should check that your firewall isn't getting in the way, and should contact me.
People asking for extensions: we'll discuss it here shortly, but I don't know that it will happen given we've already extended the deadine by two weeks. (Keep your renders going, if nothing else you can post them online!)
WIP ENTRIES ARE CLOSED
Everybody, please check that you (and your friends) are correctly listed on the entries page:
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/eon/entries.php
If you are not listed then you are not considered "finished". Please email me if you think you're finished and the system doesn't!
My email address is robert@ballisticmedia.net

Hey Mibus,
I just emailed you , I am considered finished but I have a question about the main image being shown in the thumbnail and at the top of my Entry page . It is the low resolution video image instead of the higher resolution final image so when you click on the image to see a much better larger version you actually see a smaller version . Everyone else seems to be okay , I must have done something wrong. Could you somehow fix this .
Thanks

Hi Mibus,
Ive emailed u about the finished list.
Yup, Ive checked my Firewall setting and finally im uploading now. But its pass due. I dont know if i will still be in or not. Ive submitted the Final Image in the WIP hours before the deadline, am i in?
I understood the rules clearly as it stated about lateness in submission. I'll accept any decision and thankful if theres any leniancy....
Regards....

Hi Mibus,
did I understood correctly: If i'll finish the animation within 12-24 hours, i have still an opportunity to upload my animation and i'll be listed among "finished entrants" ?
Best,

Guys just to clear something up the Final FTP upload does not Update your thread. The final regular upload updates your thread, the final FTP just gives cgsociety a printable hi-rez copy of your image.
Also when I uploaded my image it did not show up for about 30 minutes, but then appeared just fine. Now especially with everyone uploading at once the system can slow down a bit, but worry not your image should be just fine, just takes a while to it to be displayed.

I did upload and it said completed but i don't see my entry in the entry page. I emailed Mibus.
Hope it gets out there. I took off from work to finish the finals.

Hi we was as curious as anyone so I mailed Robert and this is his answer.
It's from february 6th. And thank you Robert for your quick answer!!!

Hi Peter,
We're still in the process of getting the challenge entries ready to be
judged (there are a lot of changes compared to the last challenge!).
Official judging should begin around the end of this week. Normally
there is ~4-6 weeks between the end of the challenge and the results
being formally announced.
Thanks;
Robert.

Hi, my work is not appearing on the eon illustration forum, but it does appear if I go to the "view entries" page. So, my question is if you already made a shortlist of the selected works to pick the winner (and I'm out of that :( ) or is something else going on.
thanks for your help.

Renč, it is a matter of the default forum setting, I think.
Threads that haven't been updated in the last 30 days disappear from view, unless you modify the 'show thread from the last X days' (quoting from memory) option

does anyone remember Blake 7?.
Yep, there were 3 starships that drove my imagination as a youngster, The Enterprise, Battlestar Galactica and the Liberator from blakes 7...It wobbled a bit once it reached lightspeed, but it was a a real stunner regardless, very organic exterior and interior aswell..
Great to hear the results are near, never have i had such interest in an artwork three months after completion, would be nice to put this one to rest :).
Great competiton again and best of luck to everyone^^.

Actually, I have two little ones, 1 and 2, with a third on the way.
Once they're in bed and actually asleep, I spend some time with my wife then we each watch our own TV / read our own books. (Normally 10PM or later).
I've stopped watching a lot of TV I used to, though, and have nearly entirely given up my major hobby (coding and just generally messing about on the computer).

Yeah he always says "Yes I can!!" now whenever I tell him he can't do something. It's cute when he says it out of context like he wants to play outside and I say "It's too dark and cold" and then he says "Yes I can!!". Hehe.

Rachael's catchphrase seems to be "I do it myself", and variants thereof; "I walk myself", "I eat myself", "I bath myself", etc.
Claire is at the "Dadada" phase, she knows four words - "Dadada" (Daddy), "Nana" (Mummy), "Nana" (Banana), "Dayr" (Claire).

I'm looking forward to seeing the results, even though I haven't been participating or really writing much at all, I've been a silent lurker and I think the winning will be a photo finish type result--a few people are neck and neck. It will be a toughie to judge.

I cannot remember any superquick clones for the final im sorry, i do rememeber 99% percent of the seven being gunned down in the final moments however.
BUGGER haha, yea golden bay is more than a 10 minute walk from Nelson unfortunately, about an hours drive made 2 because of an 800mtr hill...no worries, i was thinking of going to Armageddon in christchurch, so we could catch up then...is dunedin far from "The Church"?
love to join in the conversation of siblings but alas, i am an only child...which suits me fine :D.
