View Full Version : dorne the dwarf, maya model, this time good res pics....
oracrest 02-01-2003, 08:28 PM well, thought i would post this guy again, since i got no feedback last time (probably due to the fact that the images i posted in the beginning were horrible resolution). These models are for a project i am doing at school. The character, and the armor are supposed to both be "dwarf" proportions. any and all crits welcome. I have been using maya a lot over the last week, and i have lost a hold over what looks right, and what doesnt, so don't hold back on the comments. .........http://matt.cardboardboxstudios.com/armor.jpg

hey orcacrest
don't worry man, i'm used to not getting anything back on boards either. You usually have to build a sorta rep up a bit before they come flying at ya
Anyways, I've just started using maya as well, but there was one thing i was wondering. On your dwarf's boots, that flat poly look on it compared to the smoothed skin, is that because you average the normals on the boot, or just didn't smooth them.
It happened on one of my models, and i was a little confused why.

I think it's going well, though you do need time to just get the whole thing together and texture it perhaps. I think it looks good though, I like the armor quite a bit. I'm used to not getting replies on threads I start too, so far I've had mine up for over a week and I've gotten maybe 15 comments, most of it is me replying and posting new images, hehe. Yeah, you do need a rep before they bother checking you out. Anyways, keep it up, I like it. buhbyes :)

thanks guys, as far as the boots go, they are just unsmoothed. I keep thinking about whether i want to smooth, or manually make it more polygons, but for the post i smoothed it. It's for a project that i don't look to finish until around may, so it is just in the beginnings. I have to go back and add details on the neck, and fix that belly problem, and countless other things.....
my biggest concern is the hair. Since he's going to be a dwarf, he will have long hair and a beard, so i need to do something that is not going to give me an insane render time. If you know of any ways to do hair, any online tutorials or anything like that, please let me know, cause i have never done it before, and can use all the help i can get.

hey orca
another thing i noticed is that his upper body might need some muscling up. Especially his shoulders, his neck sort of flows to the bicep without much of a shoulder that i can see. If he's carrying a big axe or something, he should be like a weee wittle arnold, or something.
So are you doing this for a studio project or just for yourself?

jdiddio- i agree, i definetly need to work on the shoulders a little bit more, and define and bulk them up. It's for a project at school that i am doing this. my teacher wants me to have the whole thing done by the end of this semester, but i am not looking to really get it done until around the end of may

worked on the texture to the armor just a little bit. I decided to go with something simple, as my teacher keeps bugging me about the animation part..........:buttrock: :airguitar

the warhammer looks really nice, but it contrasts a lot with the axe. If you add some of those emblems to the axe, some more articulation like you did the hammer, they might match a big more, style wise anyways. But it looks like the hammer was smoothed, so i'll shut my mouth and let you continue modeling

thanks guys (girls?). jdiddio, the idea for the weapons is that the warhammer belongs to the dwarf, while the axe is a relic that will go on the altar of the room (kinda like a magical weapon that he has been looking for). With that in mind, I was thinking that the two weapons were forged in different dwarven citites, and probably hundreds of years apart form each other, so they probably wouldn't share a similar style, but i appreciate the suggestions, maybe if i put runes on the axe that look like a different language, that would work. (sorry for the drawn out explanation).:buttrock: :airguitar
as for the smoothing of the axe, i made it nurbs, so it is just naturally smooth.

modeled this door last night. I am not sure how much i like the design, so please, offer any suggestions. I did it while a friend and I watched a movie (anyone see communion? scary movie). The fire i am working on for my dynamics class, and will be adding it to the room. here's a few updates.

All looks great. One thing though, I would like to see more realistic textures on the armor and weapons. Like dust, scratches etc...

I like it so far, can't wait to see it all textured up and ready to go.
..I don't get many replies either....but I suck so I didn't really expect any. You'll be gettin five and six pages eventually, especially if you keep posting images.
By the way, what hosting service do you use that allows you to put up pics with out having to link to them?
Good Luck with that project!:buttrock:
