View Full Version : Import/Export assignments from Component Editor?

When you Smooth Bind a model to a skeleton you can go into the Component Editor and adjust the weighting to the joints; this gives a numerical value for each vertex to each joint.
When you Export Skin Weight Maps it creates a series of images that are black and white and it TRIES to interpretate them to recreate the vertex assignments, but this tends to be messy and doesn't always get the assignments right, even if it's on the same or a simular model that it was taken from.

What I want to know is is there any way to export the numerical information from the Component Editor? I want to use the exact same weight map on the model on a simular model but the images never get it right in crucial areas like the nuckles, etc.
I'm curently useing Maya v8.

Thanks to anyone who can tell how to do this!

The "weights tools" scripts on this page will do what you want. It writes out external txt files containing the exact skin weights of you mesh.

If you want to apply the weights to a different but similar model, then "Copy Weights" should work well if the models are very similar.

Hope this works,

Thanks for the link Stev; have you used this before? I'm trying to test it-- it creates a "name.weightList" along with a folder containing "joints.weights" but it's only picking up the spine and neck joints- its not recognizing the arms legs etc. It also doesn't seem to recognize the file format when I try to import it back in.

I've used it and it worked without any problems for me. Not sure why it wouldn't be grabbing all of the influences.
