Hi All

Just need some advice in regards to rotoscoping a buring material.

I need to show a piece of cloth being burnt, but am not able to shoot it against a totally clear background. I don't have access to greenscreen "only a DV camera here", etc. So the only way I could this is by rotoscoping the cloth & fire.

Do you guys/gals have any advice, as rotoscoping smoke and fire seems difficult.

Thank you.

I think I'd avoid that. The usual technique is to shoot over black for something like that.

You don't need a totally clear background or a green screen. A black cloth is perfect, just something that will help the fire's brightness show up so you can grab it with a luma key.

Fire and smoke are very forgiving with their keys too, since they have wobbly edges anyway :)

well, but even better than luma-keying the fire, is to instead use blending modes like add or screen. thats why they shoot it on black.

good luck,
