View Full Version : song of Boyan
VVITCHER 10-02-2006, 01:21 PM I started draw picture (thi is sketch only) with the old man who played on Gusli. it is slavonic ancient bard.
Gusli is a Russian folk psaltery, a kind of a harp. In the end of the 6th Century the Greeks took Slavonic prisoners and found a musical instrument named gusli. Ancient gusli also mentioned in the Russian chronicles (byliny). In the famous Russian folk epic "The Lay of the Host of Igor" it is played by the eleventh-century court bard Boyan.
maybe this old man was that Boyan...

Nice.
The second version of the pose is much more wistful, and since the gusli takes moderate concentration (so I've read), the bard seems to be more of an accomplished storyteller to look upwards while playing.
Might I suggest you shift the compostion to the right, left, up, or down somewhat... by centering in the middle, the pose floats no matter how articulate you depict the anatomy. I'd put him more in the lower left corner, so the negative space drifts with his gaze.

If you use at the start of your url and at the end of it, we'll be able to see the image in the thread and not have to click on it.

Oh wow, you really have a way with presenting a figure. There is so much life to this man, and he gains more and more of it as you go along. First, the sketch was alive even in its rough stages... then as you refined it, and now with the paints added in... it's really incredibly done.
I'll be checking to see how it goes too. :)

Hey Witcher,
Cool character and concept!
But I think it would be more easy for you if had started with the background and the overall mood instead of starting with the character, cause then you know exactly where colours have to reflect and stuff like that.
I realy think there's lots of potential in this one. Keep it up.
