View Full Version : Importing Problems
Tom N. 02-01-2003, 07:47 PM I have a rigged character, and whenever I import him into a scene, he is INCREDIBLY TINY. I mean way smaller than the size of one grid square. And since he is rigged with painted weights, I can't scale him up to size.
Has anyone had this problem? I can't seem to fix it no matter what I try, half the time when I import something its very very small, and half the time it imports to the right size. Any ideas??
Any response is appreciated,

I figured out what it was... somehow my units got messed up for each file and one was in meteres and the other was in centimeters. Now the next problem is that when i change the settings for one of them to match the other, they import to big now!
Any ideas on how i can save time and not have to scale things smaller to fit my character size now that we know what the problem is?

Unfortunatly, uniform scale across different scenes is a must, and should be taken into consideration before setup, because many elements of the skeleton are influenced by scale.
I dunno if this will work, but try to group the entire rig together under one parent node ( bones and geo alike). then scale the highest node on that hierachy.
improper scale dimensions is one of the oldest foul-ups one could make, and it might cost you a job, or a rehire. All ways set standards(scale and up-vector) for you projects to avoid these issues.
Sorry I couldnt be more help:hmm:

One more thing i forgot to addd.
once you scale the upper most node, dont forget to freez its transform, and delete history of it s children.

Ignore the first two posts.
if the two files were on two different maya terminals, (seprate computers) check to see if the units of measurment are the same in mayas prefs.
I think it might be under modify>preferences>units or units of measurment.

thanks for the reply. I tried putting the character into a null group and scaling it and all sorts of grouping, but like you said, scaling an already bound character just doens't work. This is the first time i've ever had this problem. The weird part is that I've done all my work on my computer and only my computer, I dont know how my preferences got mixed up between files.

It works, but you don't want your skinned geometry in the group. You'll get double transforms. Just group your rig (hopefully your IK's are already in) and scale the group node.
