View Full Version : how do I use iff?
erwin1978 02-01-2003, 07:27 PM Maya outputs to its proprietary iff format. This is a different iff format isn't it? What program can open this format? Even photoshop doesn't support it.
I thought if I render out to TGA with depth channel enabled, it would output two images: the final and the depth channel. I don't see it.

maya's own fcheck - it can convert to many common formats

Stunddmann is right, you can use fcheck player to convert iffs. I also figured I would throw in my two cents and tell you that Adobe After Effects version 5.5 supports the iff files. Thats what I use because then I can just render to .iff and have much smaller file sizes for frames.

According to what I read that plugin resamples the zbuffer from 32 bit down to 8 bit. NO good.
What other format can I output to so that photoshop6 will recognize it with all the channels?
I saved the depth channel with fcheck, as a targa and when I open the file the color is greenscale and not grayscale. Is this normal? How do I work with this depth channel in photoshop?

Photo shop is not designed to handle depth mapping, just alpha mapping , because depth mapping was designed for sequence compositing not individual image editing.
The reason why it turns green is because photoshop treats it as an alpha channel, with a different channel ID. if it were an alpha map it would be red, but since red is reserved for actuall alpha maps, it is colored green to show that it is a valid 5th channel and not considered as an alpha map, but still a valid map none the less.
You should still be able to edit the depth map in photoshop as a matte channel.
hope it helps:)
