View Full Version : First wings model - Child

Right, I decided to give Wings a go, since so many people are currently hyping about it.

I want to model a 4 (or so) year old child, so any suggestions to turn this model in that general direction are more than welcome!

I know the model is thus far, quite generic, and not particularly child like, but I'm hoping to rectify that!

(Yes, the head is modelled using Wiro's tutorial, cheers!)

Looking great so far Carina.

Kinda hard to see any details without a smoothed view, but from what you've shown here, the model looks very clean and should prove to be a very nice character.

Keep it up!,

actualyl it does look quite childlike, i'd go for a smaller nose, perhaps rounder eyes

give the cheeks baby fat etc =p

nice start Carina!

children usually have softer, rounder nose.. and flat on the bridge...

also you need to even up the mesh on the loops around the mouth, pull more vertices in the z direction.. seems kinda flat now at the moment... and a little more definition at the jaw would be nice... maybe get a reference to focus on? a child pic perhaps usually, looking at other stuff gets me going....

keep on going!

Right, fattened up the cheeks a little, made the chin a little more defined and made the nose smaller...

I am having a bit of a problem getting a decent smoothed view in wings.. but I hope I'll be able to post one soon!

Now she has a body as well, although it's very basic so far, just basically setting up the proper proportions, so any comments on that would be nice.

Levin: Didn't see your post before i posted the last update! Does it look better there or do you still think i need to flatten nose/define jaw? I need to work on the mouth but have deliberately put taht off until now;)

Another update!

I don't quite know if the legs are allright though, I want her to be a bit chubby but they might be too chunky?

Also took it into Maya for a quick test render, set to one subdivision at 100% continuity.

Thanks a lot for that levin!

I've been looking for some good references, I onlyhad some vague photographs.

Am definitely going to use the girl ones when i properly do the face... Have been putting that off til now.

I need to fix her wrists as well! Just noticed how skinny hey are!

Thanks!

Been doing some work on the face, a bit happier with that now, but it still needs some work, especially around the eyes.

Right, I haven't had time to do much lately, but I'm ill (yay?) and so I did some modelling on her face, which I think looks much better now.

very good start so far :) your chin looks too pointy. give it that indent and kind of puff it up.

Your neck also looks too skinny make it have more fat?

Your nose is looking good!

Your eyes though are too big i think. keep its roundness, but make smaller.

I think your mouth should also be placed a little bit higher (and move the chin accordingly)

I hope those are usefull for you! Keep crackin at it, like i said before you have a very good start

Very Very good model but i think that the head is so much bigger for the rest of body.... repeat I think...

Thanks for your comments and encouragement!

I have rounded the chin off a bit, is that enough?

I have also made the eyes a bit smaller, and made the lips slightly less defined. I haven't done anything about her neck yet, will look into that soon.

I am not sure I think the head is too big for the body, but I will look at it!

Looking good so far, Carina!

You need to start bringing in some more pinks and reds - especially around the eyes, cheeks, mouth and nose.

You could probably also enhance the freckles a little more :)

The tonal change in these updates is a great improvement - she was looking scarily like the girl from The Exorcist before! :D

Keep going :wip:

For some inspiration, you should check out this work of Kory H (http://korysdiner.homestead.com/Illustrations.html) - they are fantastic pics he did for some kids books :)

what did you use to texture it?
im using wing3d but i dont know how to texture

Carina
02-20-2003, 06:59 AM
Thanks Leigh, I will definitely check that Kory H thing, and good you said that about the freckles because i was just thinking it before myself.

I will start on the pink and the reds as well, just wanted to get the foundation laid first so I didn't end up the wrong skin tone all together!

Kralle, sorry, I should probably have said that After completing the modelling (or close to) I have taken it over to Maya for rigging and texturing, and the actual scene setup. I don't know how to texture in Wings3D either, but i've heard there is some experimental UV stuff for it?

Cool, I like to see others' Wings models. It's looking good. Are you completely finished on the modeling? The reason I ask is because it seems to me that there's too much distance between the bottom of the nose and the upper lip.

Carina
02-22-2003, 02:29 PM
Thanks Betelgeuse!

Well, I might still adjust the proportions a bit. I ended up using a reference picture of me as a child when i tweaked the face, and I seem to have an abnormal distance between my nose and my mouth, which I haven't noted before your comment! I'll see if I can scan the picture later, you'll see what I mean.

Anyway, I might still tweak it.

I'm playing around a bit with the texture. Still not quite happy with the specular etc.

The eyes are just a temporary texture.

Had an uneventful day at work so I thought I'd try out some blendshapes..

I am going to give them some more work. I'm doing a little bit of everything at once with this model, I keep hopping from one thing to the other, but hopefully it will all tie up in the end!

Try not to mind the colours, or the lighting, I am messing about with it!

nice looking model Carina. I like the redness around the nose, seems realistic.

I was wondering if you coud post the URL for Wiro's tutorial. I'd like to check it out.

Thanks,

keep up the good work

is wings really simpler than other programs???

Carina
02-27-2003, 07:11 AM
I don't know if it's simpler really.. I mean if you can't create a decent model in another program you're unlikely to do so in Wings...

However, you do have a nice workflow in Wings, and it's easy to customise it and assign your own hotkeys for things you do often so you don't have to cruise through menu after menu to perform a task.

I'm hardly an expert with Wings but I do like it.

Ickle update!

Again, the lighting is a bit odd at the moment, and the diffuse on the different materials are a bit.. odd. Kind of a consequence of me adjusting the materials when i was playing around with gi and final gather..
