seems like good proportions nice work, I find the iguana a bit monochromatic, they often have a lot of different colours on their scales which could add interest. And then again it works really well on the mad kitty =). Good work, nice to see more people too.

Wow, amazing sketching. The iguana is my favourite so far, it's beautiful! I quite like monochrome, although a few shiny yellows or blues might add lustre? Might be worth a try. About the skintones, in the spirit of being helpful (although I know I'm NO expert in this area) it strikes me your colours aren't vivid enough. The highlights are colourless - grey. Human skin tends to stay quite warm, obviously the colour will depend on the lighting, but even a pale face will have quite a lot of colour in it.
Keep up the great work! :)

Thanks for taking the time howlinghorse, it's appreciated. I took your advice on the iguana and added some blue and yellow. I think it it much more interesting to veiw now.
(btw- your horse paintings are beautiful!)

As for skin tones, I agree, but don't really know how to overcome the problem. I decided to go about it a different way. I started a new painting in greyscale and will add the color later. we will see if it works better for me this way.
So here is my lineart:

And starting to paint...

That portrait is lovely! Great expression and lighting. Can't wait to see what you do with it :)

Thanks again howlinghorse. Working on the lady still, but paused for a while to sketch a couple zebras: I had fun with the lighting on this one ^_^

The face, perhaps the whole head, seems to be shifted to the left of the image a bit. Perhaps it's that her eyes and lips, chin, and contour of the right side of her face don't seem to be turned as far as her nose... something about the head and facial features feels disjointed.
Otherwise, everything else is beautiful as are your other works.

Looking at it again after you mentioned it, I did realise that something was wacky on the face. I shifted the head over to the right and corrected the nose... i think.
This is quite hard. (I wasn't expecting it to be easy.) First I duplicated each individual layer into a new canvas and changed the color with color balance. I then made each item have similar colors so it looked like a painting instead of individual pieces pasted together. But all that is very nice and all, but the skin tones stil are not good. I have been struggling with skin tones since day one, and can't seem to overcome it. I'll keep at it though. Heres the sad looking update. One positive thing: I like how the background looks, more refining and I'l l be happy with it. ( I think I'll get rid of those loose petals.)
Critique needed!
Thanks, Jackie.

Hello everyone, I have been on holidays, so haven't been around. When I got back home I lost interest in the elf picture, but started a painting of a wolf head. (this is not going to be a sketch, but a painting)
Any crits are welcomed
Jackie.
Heres a few steps I took

Thank you for your comment.
Im working on a painting with a mother and her daughter, i'll post the whole thing later, but today I got a little ahead of the rest of the painting of the daughters face:
FYI: I am one of those people that CAN'T do skin tones, so to me this looks ok. But i would really like your critiques!
Thanks to anyone who drops by, your words are appreciated.

After struggling on the painting for a while, i decided to do some smaller ones to practice people. I came up with this after along time and many many many many different colors. I can't believe how good it turned out. Im amazed really. Its like i finally found the key to unlock the door that ive been trying to open...
Waaaahooo.
I also like how the hair and the fur turned out, although im most happy with the skin... look at my other people and you'll know why.
But... its not the end... your crits are most welcome!
bla bla bla she just keeps typing eh?

Improvement? did someone just comment on improvement again?!!!
YAY!
Anyways, I had also posted the latest picture in the finished gallery and someone commented that her right eye was too high up. I noticed it too so I fixed it.
It looks better imo.

Thanks for leaving a comment, diegoth, support is always appreciated!
For the next one, Im just showing the head for now, i am working on a larger canvas that shows more of the body, but I wanted to see if anyone could tell who it is without giving too much away...
so, can you tell who it is? and how can I improve him?
Crits please!

i'm guessing, wentworth miller?

great stuff by the way, keep on working!

and for suggestions on our great prison breaker, you might want to make the back of the head a little bit smaller. he has a perfectly rounded head, but in yours, it looks like the back is a bit straight.

Yes it's definitely Schofield from Prison Break, only then did I realise why showing the body would give it away. Only thing, his hair is much shorter in the show.
This face is much more accurate than your last.

look how much you've improved with skintones!! These are seriously looking really good. I instantly knew that was wentworth miller(or w/e his name) the guy from prisonbreak. this thread gives me hope that i'll be able to improve my skintones. thanks!

Right! it sure is our wonderful heroic Michael Scofield from prison break. Man i love this guy.
so here is where i am at now.
Seems to me something is still out of wack with the skull, but cant seem to get the right shape, can anyone make an outline for me?
Crits please!
ajay: I think the key is practise, just keep working at it and don't give up on it no matter how frustrated you get.

Lately, this has been really bugging me. I have saved the picture so many times with different compositions. Some with the tattoo, some with a prison shirt on, some with just the face, some with more of the body... I just couldn't find something that worked for me.
So then I started thinking. I am mostly just interested in getting the face down good, the features, the color, expression... so why not focus on what I want to focus on?
I hacked out most of the painting and made it simple and to the point but also interesting - i think.
Crits on everything please!

one last update on the prison break portrait. (Unless someone has big crits.) This picture took a long long time. I never really try to make my people look exactly like the ref picture so when I want to it is a very slow process.http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/jackie6651/wip3.jpg
Comments anyone?

I have started a new 'painting'
This is of a young girl with gold eyes, gold hair and golden skin in a feild of golden wheat with a golden sky.
I dunno if its too much of one color, thats kinda the point but what are your takes on it?
I added some purple as the complement, should i add even more? different colors? any good advices out there?
Thanks for looking.

Okay, Its been a while, I was kinda in an artistic slump, but I have something now.
Try not to laugh to hard, but I have attempted a matte...
I used three photos, added to the landscape, changed alot of colors and contrasts.
heres my photos:
http://e-advancement.csupomona.edu/film/gallery/arabian_horse/images/horse%20show%20Buckingham_jpg.jpg
http://www.eee.bham.ac.uk/spannm/Lake%20District%202004/21%20Down%20the%20Newlands%20Valley.JPG
http://hogwild.smugmug.com/keyword/sky
(just googled what I wanted)
And put them together to make this little wallpaper for my desktop:
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/jackie6651/freedom.jpg
I had a bit of fun doing this and learned quite a bit about color.
Crits from any matte painters out there?
Thanks for looking, Jackie.
