CONCEPT ART: "Frankenstein's Castle"

We will be working in conjunction with the
Hardcore Modeling Challenge (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=208) & FXWARS Forum (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=139)Forum during the month of October.
The idea is that by October 31st we will have created a opening vfx shot of a remake of "Frankenstein". The idea is that each forum will cater to their strenghts.

This is where you guys come in,

We need CONCEPT ART of "Frankenstein's Castle". The idea is to design a "Frankenstein's Castle" that is both fantastic and believable. So I strongly recommend to do some research before starting the sketches.

Keep in mind that the sketches you do might end up becoming either 3d models or digital matte paintings.

You may design:

Exterior shots
Interior Main Chamber
Doctor Frankensteins Lab.
You may draw :

Concept paintings
Storyboards
Concept Diagrams

You may start posting now, but the Hardcore Modeling Challenge (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=208) people will use you sketches for a ONE WEEK modelling challenge on October 1st.

These are the rules for this mini challenge:

Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.
Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
RESOLUTION : The image can have any aspect ratio up to 800 x 600
They can be done on any medium.
If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
The artist also has to post total length of time it took and program used. .
You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them).
Good luck

Is there any chance someone could post a little synopsis about the castle described in the Book? Of course we can take our own path on it... but it would be nice to have the 'official' description as a starting point. :) . Im gona be busy on this all night! LOL.

ok, looks like I'm the first...

aproximately 1:45h in photoshop, including the time for making THIS (http://www.telefonica.net/web2/chapuceros/sketches/castillocomp.jpg) photo-collage with some pictures I took this summer (from Krakow mainly, some other places too)... it was a great help, as I suck at drawing architecture and buildings...

http://www.telefonica.net/web2/chapuceros/sketches/castillo.jpg

maybe I should spend more time adding details...and I don't like the trees much, but that's it for today

1.5 Hrs in photoshop. Used 6 different photo resorces. and painted them all together, and changed all the lighting to night. Ill post the ref photos later. It may look too dark on some monitors... low-key is always a pain to do digitally.

Great stuff, guys. :) I wanna try a different castle style. It's actually just a very big screw. About 40-45 minutes. I'm too lazy to continue.

hmmm, quite happy with it, but its kinda uninspired...
About 4.5 hours, Photoshop, Intuos 3

Another half an hour.
Don't know if its better with or without the bridge.
I think with the bridge in front, the feel for the deep cliffs gets lost somehow...

I also googled some images for you:

audit - brilliant! totally captures the castle in my mind

pipichu - I love yours as well - very different but still seems perfect for Frankenstein!

codenothing, I can't see yours, and all I know is that it must be something worth to see!
...on the other hand I CAN see EToby's....

EToby - a bit messy IMO, maybe if you had used thinner lines it would read more easily... but I liked the amount of details, the 1816 calendar is a nice touch, hehe...

Mats Gustaffson - did you use the photo of a building underneath? it looks very good, a bit like a factory, and it plays well...

Deevad - great shadows, great colors...

rapture - good job, it's kind of new to see the castle in the sunlight... as a crit, the lack of windows/details make it look a bit like a sand castle

audit - WOW, and WOW again, amazing work

pipichu - great idea, and great details

Vyse-soa - very intelligent use of that tiled texture... I'm still not very sure how exactly did you do that....

I like this one the best! it could some long entry and "driveway" into a court yard but i love it! I think i'm going to use this for a refernce! if you could do more detail that would help a ton when it come to modeling this sucker!

hey thanks a lot yencaray!!! :) I just checked your last modelling challenge entry, you're really good with it!

Have you seen the photo composition I based my drawing on? it's HERE (http://www.telefonica.net/web2/chapuceros/sketches/castillocomp.jpg), if you want more details I could also send you the original photos...
and also...I was so happy with your post that I did a crappy map of how I had imagined it: MAP (http://www.telefonica.net/web2/chapuceros/sketches/castillomap.jpg)
what I drew was supposed to be the back of the castle, with the gate being in the other side, but hey, if you base your entry in mine you are free to do as you want, (or even change it completely)!

I will follow your work if you continue with this idea, you can PM me if you want anything else....

elmasfeo - That would be awesome! that would be alot of help! Thanks for showing me what you based it off and that map! i'm getting a really good view in my head and have some ideas for modeling it already! That makes more sence now knowing that! maybe i can change this view and add a entry and road way to the castle! maybe put a whole in the left side of the wall there where the roadway leads out from so you actually enter the caste from below! i'm thinking thats what i'll do for an entry way. i dunno though. Thanks for the help! you're awesome! i'm glad you say that! no one voted for me in the entry but oh well there were some very good people that i knew i wouldn't stand up against!

Here's my sketch.
Not really so much concentrating on the castle itself, but rather trying to establish a mood for the scene. I decided to use the scene where the torch carrying villagers ambush castle Frankenstein.

I did two versions and couldn't decide which one to post so I went ahead and posted both . One has a very plain skyline, while the other has a wierd green fantasy aura around the castle (result from Frankenstein's experiment maybe?).

nice entries.
Prilly I like the first one best, the blue contrasts nicely with the torches.
Vyse-soa nice one too, maybe a bit chaotic, it misses some focus. But I love the mood.

I felt like doing some maya work again (it's been a while) and I thought the subject was rather nice, so here goes. The background is terragen. It's really just a sketch, hope it helps someone.
