Well, that's brilliant advice !!! B R I L L I A N T

So, I guess according to you, he should get a 3.06 Ghz P4 over a Dual AMD 2800+ or 4GB of RAM even though he might not need it.
I can't wait for your other insightful advice.

asking what kind of computer to get into a professional 3d forum is sort of....well....stupid....

In case you had bothered to see the threads in this forum from even over this last month, you should know that there are a LOT of 3D artists who don't know much of the hardware "lingo". It's not at all uncommon for even really good 3D artists to come in here asking about basic hardware setup. That's because they often work for someone else and haven't yet had the opportunity or need to build their own computer.

But I guess according to you, this entire forum is stupid since the purpose of this forum is for people to ask about computer hardware including what components to get.

With no basis, you assumed that skilled v2 is someone new in 3D and took it upon yourself to set him straight.

One search will have gotten you this Sportscar of his (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=306810). Also, his deviant gallery (http://www.deviantart.com/search/?PHPSESSID=6d8dc85139fa746da667880d8c142ba7&sq=mmarti&sl=0).

On-topic now, skilled vē, you will need to provide

1) your budget
2) the software you will be using
3) Will it be used for final rendering or more for learning/dabbling ?
4) Your location/country. Prices and availability of components might be different. Also support and warranty, maybe.

As such, your query is very vague.

At home i run this machine, and i'm quite happy with it:

P4 1.8 Mhz
1.5 GB RAM
80 GB ATA 100 Drive
CD-RW
GForce 3 64 MB AGP graphics card.

Win XP Pro SP1 as the OS.

I could go faster, but for personal stuff this is fine and the price was right. Never buy the latest, it changes too fast and you pay premium dollars for a modest increase in speed.
If i could change one thing it would be the graphics card. I am waiting for the new GForce FX to be widely available and cheaper.

I bet you could pick this system up for about (with better graphics card -- i would get a 128 MB GFroce 4) for less than a $800, maybe much less i don't know. Been a while.

ok folks, let's change the flow of this thread a little, shall we? (leave the insults at the door please folks. we are here to help, not to fight).

skilled: as gyan mentioned, your budget is probably the most important thing we're missing. we know what applications you're using, so that will help alot.

also, there are a lot of very good threads within these forums already. it might pay to take an hour or so just to browse through some old threads and see what others have been recommended to date.
