I would suggest checking out the SubD Theory sticky-thread, at the top of this forum.

im working on creating a model right now using box method, but i have a question/problem
i started with the box as the Body/Chest region, and then shaped it using the Vertex's into a normal looking Torso, then i selected a polygon on the button and dragged out the legs, but a problem im finding, is that the more and more i add, the less and less points/faces there are to select, cause they keep getting strechted.. how can i fix this?

can u show a image of your model? the impression i get it that u are not extruding to get more vertices or cutting to get more divisons not sure if that is the idea u are portraying
box modelling technique is my main technique i use since first i used max until today. I say this is the greatest modelling technique. I think searcher is right. U need to extrude them. Start with simple box. Maybe 2x2x2 segmented convert to editable poly then extrude, extrude, cut, cut, move, move, etc. U should look for tuts. 3dcafe's free tuts are kinda outdated but the tuts there are very useful and informative. go & check it out it's in www.3dcafe.com
hope it helps... good luck on your character ;)

I agree with gaggle. You should check out the Joan of Arc tutorial that a bunch of us are doing at the top of the thread. To go to the tutorial itself, go to http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc/joanmenu.asp .
It's kind of confusing at times (which is why the thread is there, so people can help each other out), but it covers a huge variety of different Max tools and has a few different modelling techniques. It's mostly box modelling, but there's a fair amount of patch modelling (I think that's what it's called, it's how the head is made in the tut) as well. I highly suggest it to anyone who's wanting to learn the ins and outs of Max better. Plus it's a full character tutorial, so it goes over the modelling, texturing, rigging and animating of the character.
