Read the manual.

Hahaha bentllama you are hard core!

donvlatko: look in the direction of paint fur attributes, it should be under the fur menu.
Or try using two fur objects, one for the white spots and an other for the black spots.

good-a ruck!

Some people can't read. I certainly can't.

Just wondering, Bentllama.....

Are you aware of what "bent" refers to in the UK?

Nevertheless, I like the response... "read the manual". haha

Do you know what "sausage" is slang for in Canada and US? :D

seriously though...general and vague questions like this can be answered more quickly by hitting F1 in Maya and looking for the answer right there, rather than wait for a post... I could have pointed the person to tutorial sites, but most of those would still be less convenient than the manual at your fingertips...

...alot of times as well a user is using a crack that had the docs stripped out of it for bandwidth purposes...and that is the type of user that usually posts queries without consulting the manual first...I am not accusing donvlatko of using pirated software...I am just making a statement...

there is a famous tagline in 3d/digital 2d - RTFM - Read The F***ing Manual :)

Yeah, the manual got me the first time I tried to use Fur, didn't seem to to a good job of explaining it imo.

Anyway, if your working on a panda, texture the object your working on first, with just plain old texture maps, now attach your fur descriptions, and then map into the base and tip colour of the fur attributes your texture maps, and now, most importantly, you need to 'bake' them in, the option to do this is just above in the fur attributes box, and then render, your fur will render with the underlying texture affecting the fur colour, i.e. where it is black, you'll have black fur, and where there is white, it'll be white.

It'll be worth also baking the ambient base and tips too, and then tweaking to what you'd like. Also, don't forget to add the fur description to a light, so it can have shadows too.

Also, although not essential to have the actual model textured, it's usually better too, just so you don't need as much fur distribution, and also use quite a wide base for the fur, so that you don't need as many hairs, and hence, quicker render times.

HAHA! Good retort, Bentllama!

As for the docs for fur, I guess they aren't exactly great, are they?
Still, it's gotta be the first port of call before feeling one needs more advice.

I found, with my experiences with fur, that the manual docs were an okay starting point, but just fiddling around and experimenting got me to understand more and more what was achievable and how to achieve it.

I still am a long way off mastering fur, but what I do generally doesn't require the use of fur anyway. I have mainly used fur to help in generating renders to create texture bases that I can use to clone from and maniupulate for creatinf fur textures for low-polygon characters.

Donvlatko: I'd like to see what sort of results you achieve :)
