Well, I'd be lying if I said there were no shortcuts, but the most foolproof way to do this is the standard 5-part method:

1. Find reference photos.
2. Study and observe said reference photos.
3. Study and observe said reference photos. Again.
4. Try to paint based off the reference photos while studying and observing said reference photos.
5. Stop and do some more observation, then start painting, then stop to observe, etc.


Sure, it ain't easy, but it's the best way to do it.

Texture brushes will help. Don't rely on them too much, but do use them to build up a little grit.
