hi! did someone else find out, that motionblur with mr for maya 1.5 is wrong/nor working correctly. just try to spin a perfect sphere around its center really fast (like 0-40000 withing 50 frames). the highlight and the sphere itself get blurry (thats not like that in realworld nor is it in xsi by the way). i tried to make a propeller using the motionstep option, but it messes it up completely. another thing is, that the mb is not the same all the time, meaning that it is for example different on the first and the last frame of the timeline (and yes, my animation is linear and i even started and ended it before and after the timeline range). anybody got the same results?

yeap, we found the same problem. believe , we tried everything to get it work, but maybe it had a bad day or something.

we did a helicoptor and the mblur of the rotor was simply wrong.

Technically the MB is working properly, but not the same way real film is blurred. Maya blur is a POST process, as in it happens after the image is virtualy rendered. I suggest for specific issues like the spinning sphere, you not use Motion Blur alone, because you could get away with using a 3rd party programs to fake the motion blur, like shake(best) or AFX(easiest). Can also be used to fix render issueslike blur where you dont need it.
There are also ways to put blurs on just the texture(any individual channel) I saw a good blurred reflections tutorial on highend. The same techneque could be applied to the color channel, or any other channel for that matter.
*If that doest prove to be fruitful, in the case of the hellicopter, render it in layers( the body on one layer and the propeller on the other) then use said 3rd party software to do the blur on the prop, you could also make two prop layers use one for blurring and the other to layer "over" the blurred one to give it a more solid look.
** In the case of the spinning sphere, render one sphere spinning(with blur on) and a sedond one still. then in 3rd part soft ware, take the still sphere and key out every thing but the highlight, then composit the high light over the blurred sphere, to give you a non blurred highligh on a blurred movement.

Hope these cheats help:)

thanks for the help, but i was talking about mentalray motionblur, not the fake 2d motionblur from the mayarenderer. and this one is supposed to work like real film mb. the problem with all the tricks u told is, that the propeller will be seen from a lot of different angles. now that mb in mr for maya seems not to work as it should, i will have to fake it anyway!
