Lots of detail in this car, everything from weld spots on tubes, to twisty ties on spark plug wires, to duct tape on fuel lines to hold them to stuff.

Had a computer problem and was out for 2 weeks with about 6 hours of work, then 2 weeks later (now) about 2 nights worth of work.

Still not finished, need to finish the engine (intake manifold mainly), add the body pannels (aah! I have to cover up all this detail!!), and more detail :buttrock:

Tear it to shreads yall! Thanks!

very nice model! :bounce:

It is quite a shame to cover all that detail with body panels...perhaps an animation of pit/paddock/garage work as well as racing could show it all off...

btw, what program and method are you using?

using 3d Max5, most everything is polymodeled. About the only things that arn't polymodeled are the fuel lines, spark plug wires and water hoses.

Yea, I'm probably going to have a garage scene when I'm finished as well. With all these parts I'm modeling, I'll have plenty of "stuff" to throw around the floor and shelves :)

Nice model. Great detail though everything is very straight and un-blemished, as if it had just been built. Maybe you should roughen it up a bit so that it looks like it's been in a few races?

One way of not wasting the detail under the panels is to create a short animation of two of these cars crashing into each other in slow motion.
It would be a lot of work and would also require you to make the driver[s] but it could work really well.

Well, I have taken a break from the sprint car (have to look at something different for a few days!!) and have started another project (for a class asignment), a 3rd gen Camaro Iroc:

http://www.danielbuck.net/wip/Camaro02.jpg

I havn't totaly stopped the sprint car, but the stuff that I have been working on is bearly noticable, so I'm not going to post untill I have major changes with it.

hey man, i like the camaro you made. The sprintcar is nice but it didnt really appeal to me, on the other hand the camaro does!

What method did you use for the camaro?

Keep up the nice work

Poly modeling in Max5. I usualy start with a plane (or sometimes a box or cylendar, depends on what needs to be modeled).

Wow, great!!!!

The opening in the middle between the tailights looks a little bit small, the tag is suppossed to go there and I don't think it will fit.

The following stuff you might have already considered but I'll point them out anyways :-)

- missing the gas cap.
- missing side mirrors
- missing keyhole on the door
- wheatherstripping around the glass and t-tops
- nose emblem

So far looks awesome... is it an 86 IROC by any chance?

Also, would you consider texture mapping- and bump-mapping the tire threads? Instead of modeling it?

hehe, I have not had time to finish the car, but those are on my list to finish today (if I have time). I will fix the rear end today as soon as I get on Max, and I'll see about the gas cap (still not sure if that will turn out good or not)

I have already finished the front emblem, the iroc detail on the side, the reflectors on the front side of the nose, and everything else is to come

Yes, you have a very good eye lacaci! You can tell it's an Iroc by the hood louvers, and it's an 86 by the third break light, I believe that 86 was the only year for that.

Thanks so much for the reply!

still not finished, but here is a slight update.

http://www.danielbuck.net/wip/Camaro05.jpg

http://www.danielbuck.net/wip/Camaro06.jpg

started texturing the lights, windows, and reflectors. Everything else is geometry. (yep, the dern Iroc-Z logo is geometry... imported from photoshop paths)

I had a hard time with the gas cap, and it is inaccurate, but I'm going to leave it. I made it a bit smaller, moved it towards the rear a bit, and up a bit. It was conflicting with the polys around the wheel well to much.

I am not to happy with the tail lights, I think I need to make the red ones darker... and do SOMETHING to the rest of them. They DO have a reflective plane behind them (just like the front lights), but they don't seem to be working as good as the front does.

I'm not particularly satisfied with the side mirrors either, but they will do for now.

Very good modelling. I have a couple of questions....if you have time to answer them.

1. How did you make the hood louvers?
2. Did you model each piece seperately? ie. hood, door, etc.

I'm trying to figure out poly modelling and I can make the shape of the cars, but I cant seem to do the louvers, vents, etc.

Thanks for your time.

http://www.danielbuck.net/wip/CamaroLouvers.jpg

The louvers are actualy fake (in real life that is), and to model them, I just rotated a thin box, and duplicated it (stretching the width to fit the "louver indent".

In real life they are a bit more than metal boxes, but they are not traditional louvers like you might see on a car from the 30's.

Ahhhh...so they are seperate meshes....Thanks for the info.

Error404
02-06-2003, 11:40 PM
oh yea, for the body, I start with one mesh and get it to ruffly the right shape, then I detatch the polys that make the door, hood, ground effects, and everything else. It helps to plan out a little bit before diving right in, having the polys all lined up to be detached makes things much easier!

Holy Crap You have to make it red with a gray interior. Then it will totally look like my car. mines an 87' 350 Iroc Camaro red with gray interior. Very nice model man, I went out and looked at my car and your looks almost perfect. Nice job!!!

*EDIT* one thing I noticed. The side mirrors are too small.

Error404
02-07-2003, 02:15 AM
Sweet! Another Iroc owner! :buttrock: Mine is an 86 Iroc with a 350. If you know much about camaros, you will know that they didn't come with 350's in 86 (well, maybe 10 of them did), I have a 350 crate engine. ;)

I am going to first make it black (mine is black) with grey, but then I may do other colors.

I'm not happy with the mirrors as of yet, but I'm going to do a double take on them and see if I can get them better tomorrow.

Thanks for the reply!

i really like your tires... how do u make them?

Error404
02-07-2003, 07:34 AM
Several people have asked me how I make tires, so I wrote a tutorial.

http://www.danielbuck.net/tire_tut/tiretut.htm

Will only be helpful for Max5 (well, may help a LITTLE in earlier versions... but probably not much).

I am going to write other car related tutorials when I get time. How do you like the style of tutorial I write? to simplistic? Not simple enough? Plain confusing? Please let me know, I'm writing tutorials for other people, not myself. :D

SGT.Squeaks
02-07-2003, 03:28 PM
Thats a very good car tutorial. I think it would work for other programs besides max5. I know that tutorial will work in wings.

BTW, what crate motor do you have? And what company is it from? my 350 isn't the original either. I blew it up going a little to fast so now I have a 350 out of an 89, which I rebuild before I put in the car and added a few extra parts.

Error404

Fresh (well, fresh in 1996) GM crate 350 TPI. :buttrock:

My car is all stock aside from K&N air filter, Edelbrock headers, and a flowmaster 40. Has a very mean growl to it :)

I need to get some valve guide seals for it because it smokes when I start it up, and I'm going to put some new springs and 1.6 roller rockers in it some time soon when I get some money! :hmm:

Well, I'm still not finished modeling (steering wheel, Z28 logos, and a few minor tweaks). on and off for about 5 days now.

I'm not so much consearned on the model this time, but I'd like some crits on the composition of this picture, placement, lighting and so on. I plan on rendering this out poster size for myself :)

Then it's back to the sprint car! :buttrock:

Well, I didn't really want to start a new thread yet, so here are 2 other cars I'm working on, a 55 Chevy (from the movie "Two-Lane Blacktop in the 70's), and a 67 Chevy II Nova ProStreet:

http://www.danielbuck.net/wip/55Chevy02.jpg

about 5 hours into the 55.

and

http://www.danielbuck.net/wip/67Nova01.jpg

about 3 hours into the 67.

I did these yesterday for Valentines day, cuz I have no girl, so I put all my love into cars

I am still trying to figure out how I should go about mexturing the sprint car, there are just so many parts, and they all need to look muddy... anybody got a suggestion? I'm not really good at texturing, so I guess I'm putting it off

keep it up

I just use pictures. Didn't find perfect pictures, so alot of it is guess work, but for the 55, I worked on a 55 Chevy for a few months a while ago, so I have a good feel for the car.

well, for now I'm caught up in my midterm project. I'm animating a race between a black camaro, and a red camaro. It's coming along good! I recorded my cars engine for the animation, and I'm almost finished the animation process. I'll post up when I finish it.
