View Full Version : just a little Lego model

Here's a lego model i did. I basicaly just followed the instructions for that perticular set, so every object is in there. It was modeled in Leocad and imported in 3dsmax, basically because i figured that if i modeled the legos themselves, they'd look exactly the same (legos aren't the most challenging things to model). This scene has 998 objects and 640k polygons and it took about 4 hours to render with Brazil. Oh and it took probably about 8 hours to model (note: leocad sucks.. crashes alot and has horrible rotation control...so be warned if you actually want to try it :annoyed: )

I have to say that when I first looked at it I thought it was a picture. Then I looked at the ground plane and realized that it is a render. Smashing job guy, that's suh-weet!

I Love Lego !!!!

But, seriously nice job.

Funny thing is though I bet if you really built it out of lego it would take about twenty mins to make.

Fantastic work.

I must say that the material on the cockpit glass and truck window is what really sold me on it at first glance. I love the totally accurate blue plastic hue and the distortion!

Great stuff.

That's really good, I'm jealous as hell :applause: ! My Lego is in the loft, 200 miles away, so I'm really hurtin' now.

How did you do the clear plastic?

thanks everyone!

here's the wireframe, though there's no much to see.. being 640k polys, it's pretty dense..

as for the glass, i just used a dark blue diffuse.. a light blue transparency, and an IRO of 1.2 .. plus a fresnell reflection of IOR 1.6

What can I say it is brilliant, the mesh is sweet, the model is sweet, the render is sweet... sweet. The question is did you have pieces left over at the end, and what other models can you make from that set? :D

Keep up the good work and keep us informed.... good job!

that is a very cool looking mesh! real clean, great job!

As a small kid i ALWAYS dreamt about making lego thingies and now I guess it lead to 3d.

LEGO is VERY stimulating and fun for kids.

Very nice! I love it!
I have been playing with LeoCAD myself, and max4 for some reason flips a lot of the normals when I import the lego-meshes to render.
Could you give some info on how you imported it? Also .. some more renders?
I plan on building some sort of robot with Technic-lego. Lego kicks ass.

Thanks,
moo

To fix the normals, i first of all export to OBJ format (it's alot cleaner) and impot that in max (habware's obj importer/exporter works well for this) and then the only problem is making sure to apply a 2 sided material, because normaps will be messed almost not matter what..

good luck

Thanks for the info. Would you post some more renders? Please :)

Nice scene over all, but make a background too!!

The brazil renderer really gives it a nice look.

For once being a professional(cough) lego builder some years ago, I must say that this is fairly realistic...maybe even photorealistic. Definitly the best lego model I've seen as of yet in 3d. If I were to make that out of real legos, It wouldn't be so pretty. It would have mismatched colors and a few missing newer pieces. That was one thing I always hated...having castles and whatnot made out of 500 different colors b'cuz I didn't have the right ones ;} Great Job

I've since re-rendered it with the complete brazil (looks exactly the same) (now that i own it) and it only took around an hour to render i beleive, if not less.. all those facets kill a render, but speeding up by 75% isn't too bad at all :P

Awesome job you did there man...
It always takes me back to my childhood, whenever I see Lego models :)

I had to look twice to see if it was 3D or a picture.
Yoy did an excellent job on the glass (textures).
Can we get a close-up of the chopper?

Keep updating...

I had that set too! That's such a cool model.

If I had to make any critique about it, I'd say that the windows are a bit on the purple side, but aside from that, it's perfect :)

isn't there a freeware plugin or program that makes lego meshes?
Did you model that or use the program?

HapZungLam & zandernice

Refracted actually already anwserd that. :) Look at his first post:

"Oh and it took probably about 8 hours to model (note: leocad sucks.. crashes alot and has horrible rotation control...so be warned if you actually want to try it ) "

And yes... its an awesome picture. :)

I actually clicked on this thread thinking "pah, what's the hype about, it's only 3d modelled LEGO." Oh how wrong I was. This is perfection. I'm looking at some lego right now, and I can't tell the difference!

(I can't believe it's not lego!!)

you take small pieces of sth., put them together, and in the end it looks good :D
