View Full Version : Elethain's WIP
Hey! Thought I'd start a thread to get some suggestions and critique on my current and future works.
Never really done much CG before so feedback is much appriciated!
So this will be my first project. Initially had another one in mind, but I'll wait abit with that.
This will someday be a scene from a 17th century farm in a norwegian valley. Want to make this for my grandmother which grew up not far from where the referance picture for this simple sketch was taken.

I extended parts of the referance picture and put in my main character. The reason I put this very early sketch up is because I think I may need alot of help to get this picture working. And if someone has anything to say yet about the composition, please do!

This is a very early sketch so theres not much to crit, but the one issue I have is with the house over the little bench in the back. It looks like that house is supposed to be the furthest back but it is in fact overlaping the second house from the left. The perspective is off here and it really throws off the viewer. Try putting the house over the bench behind the house to it's left.
Thanks for replying! I can see why you mention the house, but it is supposed to stand on poles. And the bench is really the stairs up to the door.
It's a traditional food storage house called a "stabbur" in norwegian. It's really a must in this picture I think. But I'll work on making this more clear. Thanks for letting me know now instead of having to deal with that problem later on.
Have a question for more the more experienced guys here: Do any of you paint your works in a grayscale first? I have seen it done before and it would be very handy to get the right shading and contrasts for the picture. And if you do, how do you paint it in colors later on? Simply paint over by choosing the shade of gray and dragging the color picker right to the color you want? If you guys think it's a good way to do things then I'll start as soon as possible.

Ohh now I see what you mean, hehe. If those are stairs then the pic makes sence.
I'm no pro but to answer your other question, I tend to work in greys when I work with out a sketch. Just a quick block in. I use different shades of grey, but it doesnt last long. I star to lay down color as soon as I get some sort of familiar image going. As for painting in the colors later it depends on what software you use. I use painter and I like the Digital Water brush for my initial colors.
Been some time now, but been busy at school with all the different things going on there. Vacation a week now so have alot of time to work on this. Since last I've been trying hard to find ways to start painting. Tried to pick out small areas to start out painting very detailed. Took ages and did very little overall. So after hours with attempts I just started painting very rough with grays.

So is this somehow going in the right direction? Clean it up and slowly adding colors and details maybe? Or maybe some other way? Would be really nice with some advice. Thanks!
