Ok this is starting to drive me bonkers. I have a model that appears fine when smoothed, but when I try to look at an unsmoothed version of the same geometry there appears to be some sort of lighting problem. See the pics for what exactly I'm talking about.
non-smoothed version:

Smoothed version (no other changes)

Has anyone come across this problem. The model was originally fleshed out in wings and brought over to Maya where I'm adding detail. I changed the Material and that didn't seem to make a difference with the problem. I also reversed normals, added another light to the scence, and deleted any UVs that were brought over in the .obj file... non of which seemed to make a difference.
I'm running an Athlon 1.33 ghz with a GF4 ti 4600 (some det drivers I cant remember which version) on Win XP Pro.
Any ideas?
