It's even worse. I'd hate to be the guy in charge of their battery division.

Sony Corporation will initiate a global replacement program for certain battery packs that utilize Sony-manufactured lithium ion cells used by notebook computer manufacturers in order to address concern related to recent over-heating incidents. Sony always strives to deliver the highest level of satisfaction to its customers and all consumers. We believe that this program is in the best interest of both our customers and all consumers .

I'm pretty sure Sony the management that mattered was keenly aware of the exploding batteries. This is not a new phenomenon. It's been going on for years accross various brands in relatively small cases. Incidents had made the press since at least 2003. Sony and Dell also had an ongoing "discussion" as to how to deal with it before the now infamous Dell exploding laptop.
I think Sony is just stepping up to offset any negligence charges since many notable laptop manufacturers have made recalls of their batteries.

I guess if there's any kind of criminal proceedings do you think he'll be charged? :D

Yeah. This is great news for me. I work for IBM as a project manager for a Fortune 500 company. My team has done quite a few deployments of these laptops and I fully expect to be given a "hunt list" to go and replace all of these batteries. :banghead:
